My purchase of a Philips 52PFL7422D from Sam's Club was a complete accident. I was doing some other shopping when my wife pointed out the
52" inch set on disply. Like a good consumer I spent about the next 7 hours looking over any input online that discussed this particular set. This proved to be time well spent. I went back to Sam's Club, brought the set home, connected to my Time Warner HD cable box, went thru the sets setup procedure, drank a cup of coffee, and came up with a fantastic picture from HD sources. Other channels look good but not great. I also purchased a Sony DVP-NS77H upconvert DVD player and it too has a great picture. I have had no problems with voice sync and I use HDMI cables from the cable box and DVD player along with optical outputs from the DVD player to my Yamaha receiver. As for the updates mentioned earlier available on the Phillips web support, they are listed on the read me dl. I have not completed the update, has any tried this to see if the notice any improvement?

Other LCD sets I had wanted and spent numerous hours researching were Samsung LN-T4665 and 61F and Sony 46" XBR-2. Thank goodness my wife spotted the Philips 52PFL7422D.

sikorsky70: Just wondering if your set has any issues such as clouding or banding when on an all black screen (such as unused input). I purchased mine from Costco and had these issues, it is going back this weekend most likely.
Got mine from Costco and no shadows or banding. After about a week of use I have no complaints. Having gone from a 52" Toshiba HD Rear Projection set that was 6 years old to this set has been a very good step up. My PS3 and Xbox360 both look absolutely amazing, both playing games and playback of DVD's and high def DVD's.
Well, I finally took mine back. Couldn't stand the banding and clouding anymore. Tried my luck with a replacement.. and this time it was more of a success. No banding, no clouding. It still has the standby whine, although quieter than the last set, and it also has one stuck pixel just like the last set. Not perfect, but the biggest defects of banding and clouding are gone. I can live with the rest. Picture is great, watched a whole weekend of football in HD. Now to get my hands on a PS3 for games and blu-ray.

I was wondering if there is a way to check signal strength for a hdtv antenna. I've seen where other tvs give a numerical value. I'm wanting to compare strength between different antennas and placement.
Anyone calibrate it yet? If so please share your settings.
Philips has a model series 9632 similar to the 7422/7432 series that uses an 14 bit processor. It seems to be available in the 42 and 47 inch models but not yet the 52 inch model. Anyone know when the 14 bit processor will be available in the 52 inch model.

Substantial increase in PQ quality can be had using 10 bit (Sony XBR series) or apparently new Philips even better 14 bit processor.

I think the 7422/7432 series uses a 8 bit processor which is present the industry standard.

Just bought my first LCD - a Philips 52PFL7422D

I read through about 6 pages of this thread , but could not find any suggestions on setting up the Picture (brightness, scaling etc ). I don't need anything exact - just a rough setting .

I tried the Avia disc but got totally confused.

Thanks,Peter
Here's a rough example

http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showp...&postcount=189

I tried these settings myself but there seemed to be too much red, and the whites weren't white enough. Sadly, until I get a calibration disc (was thinking of getting Avia myself, what is confusing about it?) the stock settings seem to work the best for me..

ordered and am waiting for my 52PFL7432D philips tv to show up. I hope to get it in the next day or two
post #223 of 481
I got my 52" 7422D about a month ago from Sam's Club and I think the picture is outstanding. I tried a Samsung LNT4665 from Best Buy for a month, but despite it's higher quality picture it was just too small for our living room (furthest seat away is 18') and I couldn't afford the 4665's bigger 52" brother. I decided to stick with what Sam's Club had and am extremely happy with the Philips. A 52" that was a few hundred cheaper than the 46" Samsung (albeit from a warehouse store). Also, I haven't had any problems, but just upgraded the software on it since there was one available. I haven't even had a chance to watch it much yet since the upgrade, but according to the wife (so far), no change.

Had mine now for 4 days and I am very happy with it. Took some time to get everything cabled correctly.

Still tweaking the picture but overall great buy
post #225 of 481
I got a 7422D from Costco about a week ago. I noticed a little clouding and banding on a black screen, but it hasn't been bad enough for my family to notice.

I tweaked the picture using Digital Video Essentials. I got the colors pretty good, but there is still too much red (caucasian faces often look like they have a rash and everyone looks like they have on lipstick), so I had to turn the color control down some to compensate. The next step would be to put on a colorimeter and tweak the custom white balance control, in hopes that I could solve the problem that way, but I don't have one of those yet.

Unfortunately, I'm pretty sure that the set is going back. The big problem is that the viewing angle sucks big time (IMHO). The stats claim a pretty wide viewing angle and I didn't notice anything bad in the warehouse, but once I got it home, I found an annoyingly large color shift (wash out) when I was less than 30 degrees off of the perpendicular. This makes the sweet spot way too small for use in my living room. I guess I'm just going to have to trade it in for a plasma set.
I just bought this item and wow it looks really good on Bluray and HD DVD,im messing a bit with the settings, overall my Family is happy with the product.
Good to see this set getting a little more traffic... honestly once I exchanged the defective clouding and banding set for my current one which has none of those issues, I've been nothing but happy with this panel. Sports look amazing, and PS3/Bluray will be here soon.

I'm still fiddling with the settings... it seems that on my Comcast feed, picture looks best with noise reduction on Maximum, sharpness at 4, and everything else stock.

Have you guys started any calibrations?
I have played with calibrating my some. So far I'm happy but will play more this weekend

I am curious to know what the owners of this LCD think of the black levels of this LCD as compared to what a 50 inch plasma would be? Also does anyone see any motion blurr while watching hi def sports programming?

Thanks Wazy
Personally, I don't see motion blur and I really love watching football on this panel. I've even started watching college football just because its in high def, great picture.
This is a great LCD and the black levels in LCD have never been a problem for me. I don't see any washout when i sit at an angle to watch the 52" and see the picture just fine from there too. The only thing i am very disappointed with is the cheap speakers so i have to listen thru the AV system. And there is no PIP but it's not a deal breaker.

Black levels are not as good as plasma nor the Sammy LCDs. Particularly for off axis viewing.
Should have my 52pfl7432D by the end of week - along with an OPPO 1080P upscaling DVD player - can hardly wait to see what this tv can do. I will post my comments as soon as shes hooked up.

no I have not. Sorry for the delay.
Well - Finally received my tv - First impressions - After going from a 50 in plasma i was concerned about black levels and motion blurr - I'm happy to say this Philips surprised the hell out of me - black levels are excellent and motion blurr is not an issue! No banding , no cloudiness , no stuck pixels - white levels are better than plasma and colors are extremely vivid - I found that unscaled is the best setting overall for format and so far I am extremely happy with this LCD. There is so many picture options with this tv that it will take me a few weeks to get my final settings. Will post more in a week or two once I get to play with this baby a bit more!

Has anyone had issues with their USB input not recognizing when a flash drive is plugged in?

Never an issue with mine, but make sure you're using a drive that doesn't have boot loader type software (e.g. U3 software) that must first load off the stick for it to work
post #238 of 481
Just make sure the flash drive is formatted in FAT 32 or 16. It won't recognize a NTSF format.

New TV, same issue. Called Philips and was told the TV's USB will only support a flash drive of 2.0 GB or less! Rep. didn't know why but referenced other complaints. I'm using a SanDisk Cruzer 4.0 GB FAT 32 with U3 software. Rep. also said my TV has the latest upgrade (Version Q531U-0.64.14.11).

I was at Costco today and was surprised to see that the 7422 has a $100 instant manufacturer's rebate running thru 12/24. It just came down $100 a couple of months ago and I've been holding off on getting one in hopes of another drop and it appears Christmas will arrive tomorrow.
