Sony HDR UX5 HD Camcorder - how do i convert M2TS files? experts inside please!

Hey guys, i have a HDR UX5 HD camcorder. when i take vids in HD, these are output onto the disc in M2TS format. I just want to convert these to an mpeg or other popular format so i can watch them using winamp, or media player, or something like that. I havent been able to find any program that will help me do this.

Does anyone know what i can do to convert these files easily?

You guys are the pros, im hoping someone here with some knowledge can help me.

This AVS thread explains how to convert them for free if you're savvy at building open source software on Linux, MacOS X or Windows... using these tools, I've written scripts to batch-convert m2ts files to XviD, DVD-ready MPEG2, etc.
