If they say securing the dish by tieing a rope to the railing will cause the railing to get damaged, I don't think the FCC would allow such a restriction.

Well, my buckets are done!

We produce a concrete at work called Nuklad 965 (Ameron/PPG formula, under license) and it sets up in about 20 minutes for 965 deep grey (30 minutes for the 965 white) and completely cures in 2-3 hours (both blends, temperature dependent). Amazing stuff, honestly.

Anyhow, I've got a 3g bucket with a pole that rises 18" out of the bucket (maybe 26" total...) and then I've got another 3g bucket with a 2x4 that sticks up perhaps 24" out of the bucket (near to the tripod original height, remember -- I hit 2/3 satellites, I needed to reduce heigth 2-3 ")

I SHOULD BE GOOD.

The next step is avoiding the $500 fee. Should I print out a copy of OTARD and highlight the good parts and say "Hey, I'm not trying to start trouble, but the FCC says...."

I'm actually a senior in CJ and I'll be going to law school next fall so this may be good practice.

Thoughts?

I would - just to show them they are wrong.

You may be right but it sure does sound like you will be having many problems with them in the future. Hope not.

They've always referred me to the owner. I made it very clear to them before I signed the lease how absolutely critical HDTV satellite is to me.

They KNOW I'm serious. They've yet to bitch or complain about anything, and of the two minor issues we've had with the place (we're the second couple to live in this unit...ever!) were fixed within 24 hours. They've always been top notch.

I figure the best way to do this is the following:

1. On Friday, get the satellite installed in the AM. Verify everything is working great.

2. Get checkbook. Head down to the main office. Explain that I'd like to pay my rent and talk to them about the satellite deposit.

3. Show them FCC papers, with the important areas highlighted. Ask that the owner call me (I called him once and left a message, but he never called back. GREAT!) and go from there.

He's probably a reasonable guy. Suit and tie type in his 40s. While, yes, I am a young punk kid with more electronics than I deserve, but I do believe the law is on my side.

Again, I must stress every satellite question/issue that I've had has been met with acceptance and quick response from the office here at the complex. I personally asked the manager:

"If I go ahead and zip tie the dish, will YOU get mad?"

Her response: "I won't get mad, but Keith will make you take it down."

The impression I receive from the office, and indirectly from the maintance staff is -- we don't care. We answer to Keith and nothing you're going to do will make US mad, but you may make KEITH mad.

BTW, if you haven't picked up on it -- Keith is the owner.

Just a thought but...why preemptively mention the satellite deposit instead of just letting it ride and maybe they won't do anything? I live in a house now (thank god) but this time last year I was in a apartment complex that had very lenient dish rules....nearly everyone either had a dish zip-tied to their wooden balcony support beams or even on a free standing pole in the yard area behind their units. Of course this was a very small, sort of secluded complex. (my building only had 8 units total but 750sq ft each)

Well, I got the Dish installed today.

During setup it downloaded an update that changed how the signal meter works.

I've locked all three satellite, but a couple transponders are weak, meaning I've lost a few channels.

HBO-HD and ESPN-HD are the biggest losses. ESPN-HD actually comes in 75% of the time, and I get both HBO and ESPN in SD just fine. I lost a couple of the VOOM HD channels and like the whole home shopping network tier. Maybe 10-12 channels total.

Nothing TOO big. "Digital" (analog+mono) cable here is $50. I'm signed up to top 250+HD tier so it's $73 but I get a $20 credit for 10 months.

My Dish install is SO STEALTHY, I could hide it with a Razorback flag due to the angle of it's signal.

I plan to ignore the deposit until it's mentioned, then I'll bring out the FCC stuff.

Thanks everyone.

$500 deposit???!!!

I think the FCC would just LOVE to take this case on. Call them at 1-888-CALLFCC, and get the address of your regional FCC Field Office, and the name of the Engineer-in-Charge.

I think they would enjoy making a field trip to your apartment complex. I could be one of the few simple pleasures they get.

Yes, $500 refundable deposit.

The bylaws require

- No drilling or mounting hardware of any kind
- Free standing ONLY (I don't think this is legal, as the FCC ruling mentions balcony railings)
- Must use flat cable (what I use) or something else non-permanent to get the signal.
- $500 deposit

I think the FCC would define a $500 deposit as "unreasonable". Renters' Insurance would probably be OK, but that is far too much of a deposit, and they would likely feel that it deprives many people of their service.

When will landlords get a clue, and make this easy? A decent OTA antenna and a common dish would alleviate a lot of problems. And, having their own maintenance guys drill a hole or two...safely and cleanly....would give them much happier tenants.

Patio mount or bucket mount is the way to go

Why did you revive a thread that was buried five years ago????
