The "Official" VSX-94TXH Thread...:0) - Page 102

I have the Pioneer VSX-94, would really appreciate some help! I've figured out the music part but it's the surround part I can't seem to get to the bottom of.

I'm listening to a DTS concert-DVD, is it normal to hear vocals in the surround speakers? I do hear vocals in the center speaker, but also a little in the front left+right and surround speakers. Also, isn't an instrument like the piano supposed to come from the front speakers, rather than the back? It doesn't sound right, I know I must be missing a setting but I can't get to the bottom of it. And yes, everything is connected correctly and I have performed the automatic MCACC, and also tweaked settings back and forth with no results. Any help is greatly appreciated!

Hi matthew,
What concert are you listening to? I have about 30 concert DVDs and about half of them are mixed with main vocal in the surrounds that should be in center. It's really just the way the disk was mixed.

I am scheduled for mid next week...

I appreciate the heads up on the separate upload for HMG. I knew that they refer to the overall firmware version (currently 1.6 I believe Pioneer told me? - not sure) and also to the network firmware version (I am at 3.5.15.6534) so I will be sure and give them the heads up as well.

You're welcome. Sorry to hear of your frustration being without the receiver while it is being updated. I can relate tho since mine was at my service center last week and has to be shipped back again because they weren't aware of the HMG update. It looks like you may get your receiver updated before mine so let me know how it all goes. I'm hoping it will solve the Neural issue.

Hi Legairre,

It's the Diana Krall - Live in Paris DVD. I just assumed the DTS would be great and good for testing purposes. Boy was I wrong. Like you, about half of mine concert DVDs have turned out to be poorly mixed. But some were good. Same for movies/musicals. But Planet Earth is really stunning!

I would be regaining my sanity if it weren't for a different, perhaps more serious problem. Help would be much appreciated! There is an audible hum in the speakers (I have the Dali Ikon 6 5.1 system) I have disconnected everything else in the room and it's not other equipment interfering. I also tried only connecting a CD player (ie. no DVD-fans and so on) using both coax. and optical connections. The hum's there as soon as I turn the CD player on. Did the same with the DVD player. So I though it could be the speaker-wires (which are of good quality) but when I left only one speaker connected the hum was also there. Any ideas?

It says in the manual that speakers should be 8 ohm or above, although 6 is also possible. The front and left speakers and indeed 6 ohm (the rest are 8) so I tried changing the setting on the receiver. It did nothing for the hum. I'm also testing Denon 2808 and I thought at first that there was no hum but it's there, though it's very weak, at least compared to the Pioneer. I must say I'm going a little crazy over this, any feedback is greatly appreciated

Ok, I read most of this entire thread, and I couldn't find the information I was looking for. I have a VSX-94TXH, bought new about two weeks ago. I think it's up to date on firmware, etc.

a) Does anyone have the firmware version(s) that are latest?
b) What's the procedure to display firmware? Same as for the 82TXS? I had one of those. This is replacing it.

OK Matt, lets get rid of what appears to be a 60 Hz ground loop you seem to have. Two questions:

1) Is your cable hooked up to your system? If so disconnect the coaxial from the cable input to the cable or sat box and see if the hum goes away.

2) Is all your gear plugged into the same outlet? If your gear is on different outlets are the outlets on different circuits?

also if you like pm me with your number and I'd be happy to call you. Getting rid of the hum will take a little trial and error. Keep a piece of speaker wire handy. I'll explain after you answer the questions then we'll know where to use it.

I was wonderinf anyone has had any low LFE issues over HDMI on their 94?

Thanks,
What kind of LOW LFE issues ?

Legairre,

Thank you very much for your input, I really appreciate it! To answer your questions: No to Q1 and yes to Q2. But here's the thing: I disconnected EVERYTHING in the room, even lamps and I also disconnected all of the speakers. That left me with just an "empty" receiver plugged in. And so I connected headphones to the Pioneer and the hum was there! I did the same with the Denon and there was no hum. Has anyone experienced anything like this? There was never any hum with my old NAD stereo amplifier. Either the Pioneer doesn't like my electrical circuit or the one I had was broken. Also, I have to tell you, I hooked up the old NAD stereo amplifier and it was as if the music came alive. None of the receivers I tested have been able to match the audio quality to that of the NAD. I was quite disappointed.

Matt, on the back of the 94 is black plastic screw that is used for grounding the receiver. It's located at the top of the receiver towards the center. Can you run a piece of speaker wire from that screw on the 94 to the center screw on the outlet. On the outlet it's that little screw that hold the plate on, it's in between the two outlets. Just make sure you don't plug the wire into the actual outlet holes.

Don't be too upset about the amps in the 94 not sounding as good as your external amp. I use two external amps for my 7.1 setup (Rotel RMB-1095 200x5 wpc and a Rotel RB-1050 70x2 wpc) and I've yet to find a receiver than can compete with them. I'm not knocking th epio amps it's just the the dynamics, clarity and detail th eexternal amps have it is superior. I a comparison of the 92 and rotel amps a while back and posted my thoughts here. http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showp...postcount=1382

I've just got a new VSX94 to replace a really old Denon, and for the most part, I'm very satisfied with this receiver. However, I'm confused about a couple of issues: 1) "Over the air" HD signals are in Dolby 5.1, but in "Auto" mode, the receiver only shows "Stereo", and sound only comes from the two front speakers. I have the optical out from the TV connected to an optical input on the Pioneer (as was the Denon), but no 5.1 sound. What am I missing here? 2) My TiVo is connected to an S-Video input (DVR1), and output via the HDMI, but the TV says "Not Available" when I try to turn on the closed captioning feature. How did I lose this? DO I need to use an S-VIdeo out to retain this feature? 3) How do you know what firmware version you have? BTW, this receiver runs very cool, contrary to some posts that says it runs really hot!

Hi J...

I'm learning something new every day!

I just spoke to the service manager at an authorized Pioneer service center. He informed me that the HMG firmware is 3.5.23.6650 and addresses some intermittent issues updating the Neural Radio station streams. I was also told that the latest HDMI version is 1.006, the Main firmware version is 1.006, the DSP version is 1.003, and DSP flash version is 2.007. I am shipping my receiver to them first thing next Monday for updates.

As for checking the current versions on the receiver, I unfortunately cant remember the procedure that Pioneer told me over the phone about a month ago. Maybe someone else here has that info.

Regards,

Rich

I just bought a vsx94. So is it my understanding that ALL of these receivers are going to need a firmware update then and we have to MAIL it to the service center? Isn't that going to be a pretty big pain in the butt?

There's a lot of us owners out there . . . are we all supposed to be sending our units to the service center for updates?

I love the way mine sounds and works right now, so until I find out what specific issues each firmware release addresses mine isn't going anywhere.

I just purchased a cooling fan for my 94. I was running it last night for about 4 hours and it got a little too hot. Where sould I place the fan on the reciever? The shlef it is on has about 2 inches of space on each side and about 6 inches on top. I don't know which way to place the fan to get the proper ventillation.

Thanks,

Pio fixed the low LFE on the 7X and 8X receivers with firmware. I got both my 72 and 84 updated 18 months ago. The 9X doesn't have the issue.

Is the shelf closed on the back or front?
Like Divedude said is the it closed in the front or back? If it's closed in the back and open in the front install the fan on the back of the cabinet right below the shelf above the 94. Make sure the fan is sucking the hot air out of the cabinet and not blowing air over the 94. You want to draw all the hot air out the back while bringning in fresh air in the front.

Hi Dennis,

Any firmware updates would address specific issues so if you arent having any trouble with your receiver then there is no need to go sending it to a service center. My receiver is experiencing the Neural Radio issue so I will be sending it in for the updated firmware to resolve it.

On the 9G Pioneer Kuro thread many people say there will be some advanced integration if paired with a new Pioneer receiver and BD player.

http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showp...postcount=2915

Does anybody know if the 94TXH will count as a new receiver since it is staying in the current line? Could this be what the new firmware does? If it won't, which of the new receivers that Pioneer is releasing be a worthy companion to my upcoming 9G Plasma?

Thanks.

The shelves are open in the front. The back of the shelf is closed except for small cut outs to run speaker wire and cables. The shelves are built into the front wall of the theater. The fan I bought was from buy extras, here is the link:http://www.buyextras.com/evavcoblfanf.html
I think I should position it so one end of the fan is facing the front (open) part of the cabinet, so it can blow the air out. Does this sound right?
Ideally you want to draw fresh air in through the front of your cabinet and exhaust it out the back. This pic displays how you would setup fans in a closed cabinet drawing in cool air from the bottom and exhausting the hot air out the top. Since your cabinet is open in the front and not closed all you need to do is position the fan on the back of the cabinet right below the shelf above the receiver and draw the hot air out like in the top of the pic. Just imagine your receiver was on the top shelf of the pic. http://www.diamondcase.com/TT/TT_Pro.JPG

ks-man,

No, the 94 does not count. It must be an SC-05, SC-07, or SC-09.

That having been said, I have serious reservations that any but the most discriminating audiophiles are going to hear a difference significant enough to justify the added expense.

There is also supposed to be an improvement in picture quality using a Pioneer Blu Ray DVD player (the newest 4th generation release) with the 9th Gen Elites.

Once again, I'm VERY doubtful this will be significant.

I am sure it will be THERE but for me at least not good enough to justify the added expense of buying another Blu Ray (when I prefer a PS3 as a gamer) player as well as waiting another 3 months to pay premium prices on the new Elite receivers . . .

Just my perspective on this.

I am about to hook a Wii up to my system. Since the analog inputs will be output via HDMI, is there any reason to upgrade the cable to component?

Thanks,

Thanks Rich -

I am having a hard time getting my authorized service center to accept that there are multiple updates necessary, but I will keep working on them. I believe that I am finally scheduled to be on the bench today (two weeks after I dropped it off) so it is critical that I convince them this morning!

I did get confused by your numbers above. You initially said that the main receiver firmware is 3.5.23.6650, but later said the Main firmware version is 1.006. You also said that the HDMI is 1.006 - maybe that was where 1.006 came in? I was thinking that the 3.2.23.6650 number maybe was the network/HMG firmware version? I just want to be certain and correctly list all of the updates for them while the thing is there the first (and hopefully only!) time. I never want to go through the pain of losing it again...

Your continued help is GREATLY appreciated. Please accept my thanks for passing on the info that you have provided!
