I read through most of the thread but still confused about one thing. If I have an oppo 980 and plug it into the 94 through hdmi and set the oppo to 480i signal. Will the 94 leave the signal alone and not upconvert it? I want the tv to do all the upconverting. The tv is hooked up through the hdmi out.

See how letting this go on is hurting sales, Pioneer?

I'm still not sure how widespread the issue is. Someone correct me if I';m wrong, it seems to be only a handful of users in this thread that have had the issue, which could point to a specific production run(QC on that run perhaps). My unit was manufactured in June of 2007 and I bought it in December of 2007 and have had no problems what so ever.

Over HDMI the 94 will not touch the signal. If you feed it 480i from the player and the TV is locked onto 1080p the TV will do the conversion from 480i to 1080p.

Just hooked up this receiver and have found that when using the multi-channel analog inputs, I'm unable to get video from a HDMI source. It is not a deal-breaker but just curious if there's a solution or feasible work-around to this.

I do not know what yype of monitor you have however; it should display the resolution it is getting if that is a feature. My sony will show me resolutions from 480i all the way to 1080p even though it is diplaying all input at 1080p after handling the unconversion/deinterlacing.

Hope this helps.

The only mention of it that I have ever seen in regards to a 94 is the one guy and his brother that both had the same exact problem at the same time, think of the odds of that happening.

Maybe this first and only one time posting new member who in his profile lists himself as a service tech is with Denon, Yamaha or Onkyo?

The post about the brothers buying two receivers at the same time, manufactured in the same month says nothing about them both having a problem at the same time. When he says "exact",
he is referring to an earlier post from me about a problem I discovered while working on these units & thought it might be tied to a guy who's volume went to max instantaneously.

No iam still here. I only mention my brother has this issue with the volume lock, mine is still working fine. I dont use it as much as him--family guy .
He did till me it happened not once but 3 times, before it died. It is now at an authorized service depot.

Just hope mine is OK! my previous receiver was the VSX-07TX & is still working great.

ok guys I'm kind of a noob and need some more assistance with my 94.
I read the instruction manual and it didn't seem to help much.
I have a PS3 hooked up to HDMI port 1 and have the audio set to PCM.
I was flipping through the sound options with the THX button on the remote and the best I can get is PL II+MV THX. THX Cinema 1 or 2 are not available as an option for some reason.
Is there a setting i missed perhaps?
Any help would be greatly appriciated.

Thanks.

I do plan on letting Pioneer know what I think of their one authorized service shop once I am through this. 3 weeks setting on their shelf before they even touch it is ridiculous, and their policy is that you are not in the queue unless they have your equipment. It has been a nightmare!

Hey there Dash..

That sounds like a total nightmare. I wouldn't have expected a firmware upgrade to be such a pain and dont blame you for wanting to give Pioneer some feedback. It will hopefully make a difference in their selection of 'authorized' service centers.

My receiver's been gone about two weeks now. The main tech at the service center was out sick all last week so it wasnt touched. I am hoping to have it back by Friday so once it's hooked up again I will let you know if my Neural Radio issue is resolved.

Hang in there...

Rich

My 94 was built in October 2007 and was purchased in January. I have it on 16 hours a day without any problems. I am extremely happy with it

I've had mine for 6 months, and its on all the time, sometimes all day belting out tunes, and I've never had one single issue. Awesome receiver.

Manufactured in Feb '08, bought end of April/beginning of May, no issues at all (except it's a ***** to figure out ALL the options!), light use though.

Rich - I am getting ready to be indebted to you!

Yesterday I called for a status and was told that it was on the bench going through the final testing phase. She said that they had done two updates already (I think HDMI and main firmware). Yay!!

I again (maybe the third time?) asked the woman who called to verify with the tech that Neural Direct was working, as I was told by (ahem..) Pioneer that it required a separate update that would not just normally be done. She put me on hold, came back 5 minutes later and asked for more details. I explained that I thought it was a network update, and that the fix it would provide was that the HMG Neural section would no longer just display the test streams after phoning home on the network. She called me back about an hour later and said that the tech had been on the phone with Pioneer, they explained what update was required, and that he was going through that update then!

The long and short of it - I expect to get a call that mine is done and I can pick my unit up today, maybe tomorrow. Had it not been for your additional info on the separate updates it sounds a lot like I would have gotten the thing back after 4 weeks with STILL no Neural Direct. I will provide an update post facto, but do expect to be thanking you LOUDLY!

More details soon...

Hey Dash,

That's great news. I look forward to the details once you get the receiver back. I am glad that I was able to pass on some of the knowledge I gathered about the receiver. I can't take all the credit though. I worked with a great engineer at Neural Music Direct who took the time to research the issue and let me know exactly what was needed to get the Neural Radio to work. I was also very lucky to find a service center/tech who were familiar with the Elite's and knew exactly where to go for the updates and what to update.

As far as my receiver goes, it's being a bit stubborn at the moment. The service tech is applying the 23.6650 update and the receiver reports that it was successful, but still displays 16.6650 as the FW version. My tech is waiting for Pioneer support to get back to him to find out whats going on.

I will post more details as well once I hear...

Rich

I just logged into my 94 receiver via my wireless home network and my 94 receiver shows the following firmware information:

Firmware Date: 2007-07-26
Firmware Version: 3.5.16.6650

All of my HMG functions work fine including Neural Radio, Internet Radio, USB thumb drive and connecting to my networked computers hard drives. In fact right now the receiver is playing all the music files in my desktop computer in alphabetical order and it even displays the song title in the receiver display.

By the way if a person has a copy of the new Pioneer HMG firmware update in their computer hard drive you can log into your receiver if it is plugged into the network and one of the options that comes up on my computer is to update the firmware in the receiver. If you select update firmware it comes up with a browse window to point to the firmware update file. Once you have selected the correct file you just select update and that is all it takes to update the HMG firmware version.

Thanks for the message.. actually the network features of my receiver work great (with the exception of Neural Radio obviously). I've been listening to internet radio stations, streaming mp3s from my desktop and a USB drive. The Neural Radio feature just refuses to work. It appears that these issues only affect a small percentage of owners but it was enough of a concern for Pioneer to address the problem with updated drivers in the form of a firmware update.

AVSfan99 mentions the receiver's firmware upgrade screen and has some pics starting at post #264 of this thread. I guess the only problem is trying to get hold of the firmware file since Pioneer's service website site can only be accessed by authorized service centers.

Rich

From what I hear, pioneer is not letting that out to the masses yet. I hope they change this practice. Anyway, my B stock unit is

Firmware Date: 2007-06-11
Firmware Version: 3.5.15.6534
Build date of 7/07
(is there a big difference?)

All items in the HMG are working fine. As a matter of fact, I put a 4 port hum on my AV rack and the receiver got online without a hitch. I think I am going to wait for a major update issue before sending this puppy off for anything.

Thanks,

Hate to be a pest but does anyone have any info regarding my post 10 posts above this one?
Can I get some help from one of you 94 guru's out there?

Thanks.

Hi, acid, so if you hit THX nothing at all happens? Or does hitting THX cause it go through to the PLIIX modes?

I don't have a PS3 so I don't know your other options. but perhaps the PCM
option is for 2 channel stereo output which would explain the problem you're
having. Is there an option for bitstream? That would do it if there was.
When I hit the THX button it gives me the options for PLII THX+Movie, PL II, NEO 6, and THX Game and thats it. I never get the 2 options of THX Cinema or THX Cinema 2.

The PS3 does have an option for bitstream but I was told in another post that if I change it to that I won't get the losless audio because the PS3 is unable to convert unless its in PCM.

Thanks.

acid, I know the answer to your question, but I need to hit my remotes buttons to tell you how to solve the problem. I'm at work right now ,but I'll be home in about 45 mins and post back.

See page 29 of your manual. The first time you push the "THX" button, you should get "THX Cinema". Repeated pushes cycle through the other selections (the second push gets you the "PL II MV+THX"), etc. The 4th push should get you "THX Select 2 Cinema", three more pushes will get you back to "THX Cinema".

Since you are using the LPCM coding out of your PS3, the 94's display will not show that you are decoding TrueHD or DTS-HD Master Audio (that only happens when you use bitstreamed audio -- the PS3 only outputs the HD audio tracks via LPCM).

As Legairre asked, what does the 94's panel display when you do select THX Cinema (the 1st push of the button)?

Stechs01 -- As I mentioned, the PS3 only outputs HD audio via LPCM. PS3 bitstreaming only outputs the core DD or DTS audio (if anything - I don't have a PS3 either, just reporting what the PS3 threads say).

Try selecting the bitstream option on the PS3 and let the receiver do the decoding. The receiver should then show which lossless audio type it is decoding in the receiver's display. I have my Pioneer 95 player set to bitstream and the receiver shows TrueHD and DTS Master when I select that selection in the disc menu.

Ok, like I said I am not familiar with PS3 but it sounds like the same issue with BlueRay & HdDvd players that decode the audio internally & send it to the receiver PCM multichannel. Will the receiver show PCM on the display when you push the auto surround button on the remote?

I should also note that it also depends on what you are playing. If the receiver
is getting a 2 channel source the sound fields are limited of course to the normal & advanced modes.

RJRSW -- Apparently you were typing while I was sending my post. The PS3 will not send lossless audio via it's HDMI output unless it is set to LPCM only. It's stated very plainly, and repeatedly, in the PS3 threads. This is why I prefer to get a stand-alone BD player, to get unprocessed bitstream lossless audio..
