Ascend Sierra-B&W 805S-Swan D2.1SE-Tyler Acoustics Ref Monitor - Page 2

Here is some info regarding fit and finish from the expert, AKA my bride.

And yes, pics will be posted ...

The Ascends are about normal for a Piano Gloss Black Speaker - nicely finished, and quite attractive.

The B&W's are a Rosenut finish - non glossy, but attractive, in the league of the Ascends.

The Swans are really good ... with a deep gloss that looks like several layers of hand rubbed lacquer.

As for front vs. rear ports ... in a GP session, the 12 inch difference might make a 1 dB difference in SPL ... in room, even less. Plus ... when listening, the ports are where they are, so measurements shoud be taken accordingly.

Some of the harmonics look more substantial than I would have expected.

Can't wait to hear the reviews, thanks for doing all the work and posting your results.

Jake - From 5.25 and 6.5 inch drivers at pretty high volume levels, the harmonics are quite good ... -25 dB (from memory) was the worst we saw ...

Dang, Craig's at it again.. I cannot wait to hear the other comparisons; Swans, Rockets etc. now I'm looking forward to hearing your thoughts/opinions on these as well.

Great job man..

PS. PLEASE adopt me.

Craig,
Did you order the Ascends and Swans normally? What I mean is do you think they knew who you were, and what you were going to do, when you placed the order?

UW ... Thanks for the kind words, when you get your MBA, we can talk ...

PaulHarvey (That name rings a bell ...) ... Swan speakers are sent from HiVi to The Audio Insider, and I ordered them through TAI. This means Swan would have had to known before shipping the speakers which pair I was going to buy, before I made the decision to buy them.

And the Ascends were "B" stock speakers from the first run. Add to that David Fabrikant's well known integrity, and I cannot imagine him EVER sending a "cooked" speaker.

It is pretty safe to say I got "random" samples.

The only speaker pair I have here which was hand picked were the AV123 X-LS EX prototypes, which was mentioned in the bookshelf test.

I have not heard much about those speakers since, and don't think they ever made it into production.

MBA as in Masters in Business Admin (not sure if MBA has another meaning) I'll be getting a degree in Business Admin (UCF) soon, though not a Masters.

Can I trade in a minor + degree? That sounds about fair...

Take care Craig..

I'm sorry, I'll rephrase.
Did Jon Lane or anyone at TAI know they were going to you, and did David know they were going to you? Just curious.

We knew they were going to Craig because we spoke about his order. Then we shipped from one of our two warehouses from random stock -- no one from TAI therefore so much as glimpsed the box prior to release.

Craig can probably vouch that his pair were factory sealed when they hit PA. Once they've passed manufacturer QC, they're basically on their way.

PH ... Of course they know it is going to me ... my question back to you is this: Does it matter ?

Does it matter ?

To me , it's just another piece on information. Knowledge is a good thing, don't read too much into this.

hey, I'm just making sure you get to experience the hidden gem they are.....for all the speakers you've listened to and enjoyed, it would be a great tragedy if you didn't get a chance to hear them properly setup.

soon thereafter, when you start comparing "big expensive" floorstanders sometime in the future, I got another little gem for you, albeit it aint quite that "cheap"

I have learned from a few years of these threads that 99% of those reading it are lurkers, and never respond.

Yes, knowledge is a good thing, but I don't want anyone reading this thread to think anything less than a straight up test of products they can buy themselves.

Craig , Looking forward to your findings . I for one like your very honest reviews and have a pair of speakers you have in your shootout in mind for myself .

Also looking forward to those pictures .

That sub in that other thread was insane

Talk at ya later

Best to present the facts and let everyone think for themselves.
But a good read it has been, and I am curious given the decnt measurements, if you have though of possibly measuring each speaker individually against it's mate (left vs right) to see if there is much variation....it might be interesting to see how well matched the pairs were.

Hi Craig,

Nice job as always...

If I recall, didn't you place the very first order for Sierras? I knew you ordered them but I have absolutely no idea what pair you got. In fact, not only were your speakers from the first production run of cabinets, I think they were from the very first Sierra-1 production line in our factory. - In other words, I'm just glad that they ARE performing well -- we were in production panic mode those first 2 weeks

A bit like purchasing the very first model fresh off the production line for a brand new car model (did this once, Nissan Altima for the wife -- would NEVER do that again, so many problems, California's Lemon Law was a real blessing)

Have fun!

David ... They were the first ordered, but not delivered. Some of the local guys to you got there first, before orders were shipped.

I will try to post my serial numbers tonight when I get home.

You and Swan have definitely upped the ante in the under $1000 speaker performance arena.

As a teaser ... so far, all 4 listeners have picked the Sierras and the D2.1 SE's over the B&W's ...
Craig, perhaps you could do some testing with a lesser amp to see how the speakers respond to lower current? You have an Onix SP-1, no? Sometimes inefficient speakers have more benign impedance and phase responses and, visa versa, other speakers can be misleadingly efficient. I would think quality amplification factors into the price point. I would have liked to have suggested it during your budget testing (where it's more important), but missed the opportunity.

Yes, now I remember. We did have a few guys that came by that Friday evening to grab some pairs. They made me keep the office open late that night

For various reasons, I don't recommend posting these numbers publicly.

Thanks, much appreciated! I do hope to eventually get a chance to hear the new Swans. If you get a chance, can you post some pictures? I would be curious to see the size differences between all the speakers.
I think I was the second or third to pick up the Sierras, and xcjago got there as I was leaving.
Craig, just curious if you have considered or reviewed the Onix Ref 1 speakers?

http://www.**********/products_produc...s&product=23.1

I found a pair used, for around the same price as the Ascend's..

UW ... The Ref 1's are a fine speaker, but not in the same league as the Sierras. AV123 did have a special on them for a while, selling a tube integrated amp AND the speakers for $1195 ... that was a great deal.
Craig, I think the xls-ex speakers are still on track. Check this thread:
http://av123forum.com/showthread.php?t=23204
They won't be called 'ex', they will still be called 'xls' or 'xsls' or whatever with new tweeters and upgraded crossovers - and with a corresponding increase in price - about $80/pair.
Which Tyler Acoustics model is it going to be?

Do you mean the Ref 1 is a step higher? or lower?

He means a step lower.

Thanks Craig. Not long ago, they still had that deal (SP3 + rosewood Ref 1's) but I guess they stopped it, as I tried looking for it, and was unable to find it.

I've bookmarked the Ascend Sierra's.. and looking forward to hearing your final review on the speakers. The Tylers look good, but are a bit outside my budget. Assuming you're not trying the Mini's..
wow I am surprised that a $900 speaker is in a better league than $1200 Ref 1 considering how well received AV123 is. I should try the Sierras myself.
