HD-DVD -- a waste on my Sony 60XBR950 TV?

I've got a Sony KDF-60XBR950, which has 480p, 720p and 1080i -- but not 1080p. Also, this TV has a DVI input, but not an HDMI.

Is there any reason for me to get an HD-DVD player, or would it be a waste on my TV?

If it would be an improvement to get an HD-DVD player, which one would you guys suggest for my TV? I don't plan on getting a new TV for quite some time.

Thanks!

No. I think you could really benefit with HD on it. The HD-A2 should be your ticket. Good Price and fits the 720P and 1080i spec well.

A 60" TV is a prime candidate for HD movies since you need lots of pixels to properly fill up that football-field screen of yours!

Go for it, by all means!

Would a better/more expensive unit be a waste, then? Or ???

Again, I don't have HDMI inputs on this TV.

The A2 over component for HD-DVDs is all you need (HDMI-to-DVI if you also want to upscale SD DVDs).

HD DVD should be a requirement for any HDTV.

I have an older Sony 57" (1080i) and I am using the AX2 with HDMI to DVI without any issues.

Yes. An HD player would amaze you with the difference in picture quality.

Are you using a separate sound system, or just the TV speakers? If using a separate system, what types of inputs does it have? For you situation, the main difference between the A2 and the XA2 would be the audio, so we would need more info to give you a solid recommendation.

I've got a Pioneer 84TXSi. Does that help?

That receiver is no good. You should box it right up and send it to me.

If you go HDMI into your receiver, you can go HDMI out into an HDMI->DVI Convertor and be in excellent shape I'd think. I picked up my HDMI->DVI convertor for one of my LCDTV's for $5-ish at monoprice.

You can do a simple test. Hook up a laptop or PC via DVI and set your desktop on the TV to 1386x788 (your native resolution). If small text is sharp and easy to read, you're good to go.

Cool... thanks.

Once you watch a good transfer with great PQ on HDDVD you will not want to watch SD anymore. I've pretty much watched HDDVD movies exclusively for the past couple months since I got my D2 from Costco. Unfortunately my Netflix queue is getting close to empty for HDDVD, so hopefully some new movies will be released soon.

Get yourself a Toshiba HD A2 or wait for the A3 and then, a bunch of movies from Paramount and live large with the 60" bad boy. Hook it up with a DVI/HDMI or Component wires and enjoy how good HD DVD PQ and SQ can be.
