HD DVD/Blu-ray and 1080p PJ - any moire problems?

Okay, so I'm now running a 720p PJ using a Lumagen HDQ to scale the 2.35:1 image and a Panamorph lens.

Occasionally I see some moire patterns, but this is unavoidable as far as I see it as 1920 x 816 doesn't scale perfectly (not a multiple of) to 1280 x 720.

When the time comes that I can upgrade my PJ to a 1080p model I'm wondering if I will be any better off? If I was running the PJ with the source matched 1:1 then I'd assume moire patterns would be a thing of the past, but when running a CIH set-up and scaling the source, surely this will introduce problems with moire patterns?

Anyone with such a set-up care to comment please.

Thanks,

Rob.

There is only one time I have noticed moire on my 1080p + lens setup with HD sources, that is the classic MI III "staircase scene". That is the only time moire has jumped out at me, and even then, when I was watching the film for enjoyment, I did not notice it. It was only later when it was pointed out that this was a problem scene for many players/displays that I noticed the artifacts. It would seem that scaling artifacts are unavoidable - you scale anything with high frequency single pixel vertical/horizontal patterns to a non-integer multiple and you are going to have some sort of interference patterns show up, unless you also vertically filter to soften the image, and that does not eliminate the interference, just hides it in softness. Of all the issues involved in HD playback, with or without a lens, moire rates near the bottom of list of things that concern me for practical image quality. Not all scalers are equal, and it has been said that the Lumagen scaling is particularly good, so YMMV.

In fact, that particular artifact is a problem with the disc encoding itself. It's visible whether you scale the image or not.

I have no issues with moire scaling 2.35:1 movies to fill my CIH screen.

i just setup a CIH system with the Lumagen HDQ, Prismasonic FE1500 and the JVC RS1 (1080p) projector, Toshiba XA2 HD DVD player and SMX acoustically transparent screen

i've only been up and going for a few hours but no moire at all

when we built the SMX screen the manual said to rotate the screen material to remove moire...we rotated it as much as the given material would allow with great results

just my $.02

HTH
