Athena P6000 Problem?

I have a P6000 that is just out of warranty. I rarely use it (2 movies a month?) and never abuse it. Today while watching a movie a noticed instead of bass there was this whirring sound. It only happens when the sub is actually playing. The sound also happens when I plug and unplug the rca cable from the back. Any help or suggestions would be helpful. Thanks.

I don't really know but I have two ASP-6000's and they are both broken. One has a shot amp, the other won't even power up. I've heard lots of problems about these woofers and personally will never buy Athena.

Sorry to hear of your problems wuth the P6000. I'm a huge fan of this sub but mine also died a few weeks ago. When plugged in it just moans. I'm now using my spare Energy 8.3 which is a great little performer but doesn't come close to the impact my Athena provided. I really would to get it fixed but I'm afraid it may be a defective design that will continue to be a problem. I've written to Athena (even included your links as an example of a widespead problem) but have received no response....not impresed!!! I wonder if it's possible to fit in a new amp from Parts Express or Creative Sound since the woofer and box are in fine shape. I would have to recut the opening. Be nice if there was a way to get all those great sounding P6000's back in action. I've made contact with a local Athena guy and he said to bring it in. If he has any answers beside a new amp implant I'll pass them on.

A lot of folks are having problems with the P6000. I'm guessing the amps are faulty, maybe you can get a replacement amp somewhere.

I know the pain, I got the P6000 march of 06, and I used it about two times a month for movies. My amp went out, just bought a new one off ebay, it was not a Athena sub. I bought another brand of sub, hope I get more then 70 hours out of this one. Was told by Athena it would cost between $200 to $400 to rebuild the amp, forget that.
To all you guys using your Athena subs for doorstops or coffee tables I did a little investigating. My local Athena guy said that there was a bad run of FET's on not only the Athena but also Energy subs that require replacing the whole circuit board. He did supply me with a parts number
Z5AM//600138 -PCB Main Board AS-P6000 N/A $203.02
which shows up on a number of parts sites when I searched for it.
I'm looking at 200-300 for a repair. Athena should really repair all those non working subs under an "extended" warranty program. Velodyne for one has increased it's warranty on sub electronics to 3 years to match SVS so the the prescedence is out there. I asked Chris if an "extended" warranty would be available on the repacement amp as a show of confidence and am waiting for a reply.

I did set up a thread on "Replacement Amps" on the DIY Speaker Forum. Dale "Riverwolf" was very helpful in saying a non Athena amp might not have possible custom equalization built in like the Athena amp but might work fine. Suggested replacement amps to look at would the
Kiega made Dayton SA-240 which has a closed back for an external placement and the
PE Bash 300 from Parts Express and the
Rhytmik A-350 amps which have some modifications on the Kiega platform.
In the meantime we should keep bugging Athena to see if they will back their product.

You can put me on the list with broken amp.

I also sent an email to Athena with no reply, hopefully they will back it if you knew they sent them out with a defective part.

I just love how it was working before i moved. I put it back int he factory box, using the factory packing, placed it in my car, moved it to the new house, took it out and got nothing after hooking it back up.
Add me to the list mine broke a couple months after warrenty pissed me right off, no response at all from Athena, just sounds like distorition comming out of the sub weather its hooked to the amp or not.

Lets make a stand let me know o anything I can do to help, im canadian and payed like 700 bucks for this piece of crap. Ya I know i got ripped off by the future shop.

They're already losing sales because of this...reading this thread steered me away from the P6000 despite the great price that aa was offering.

I hope Athena steps up to the plate and takes care of you guys. Nothing worse than a company that doesn't stand behind its product.

I don't think they are worried about sales at this point. Since Athena was bought out all the Athena lines have been discontinued and the only thing available now retail is what's left in stock. Not even thinking about the fact that the 4000 and 6000 are older models that have been updated.

Their CS was very receptive and helpful with a problem I had a few years back. I got a response within minutes and they went above what I expected to help. I'm guessing since the buy out they are in limbo now, although don't quote me on this, it's an opinion. I've got an AS-P400 and AS-P4000 that are still going strong. If your looking for a sub at the 6000s price point I'd check out the Bic H-100 or one of the lower priced offerings from ED, both are excellent products and the companies are still in business.

I feel your frustration and they should at least respond to the problems with the 6000.

I'm going to have to totally disagree on their products being poorly made. Other than the 6000s amp problems Athena made some great speakers at their price point. I've still got the AS-P4000 sub and love it, also gave the older model 400 sub to a friend when I upgraded and it's still going strong. Both are great performers at their price point. Their Audition Series, Macra system and Point5 series speakers got rave reviews and after comparing them to every other budget speaker I could find I'm using the auditions and point 5s on 2 of my systems.

I'll agree with the no support anymore but other than the 6000s amp problems they made some of the best quality/performance budget speakers out there. If for some reason I had a need to buy speakers on a budget again I'd go with the audition series in a heartbeat. Especially at their closeout prices now.
Can't agree more with the quality of the Athena line. The other day I was watching a film with my Point 5 system and it wasn't till I was halfway through that I realized I hadn't turned on my Velodyne sub. Just shows how good a system it is. The 6000 is a very frustrating aberation.

Theres lots of us out there i keep finding with the same problem. Even athena telling me to piss off in a reply would have been better then nothing at all. I dont care how good there other speakers are, for how I am getting treated I will not give them my money ever again.

I agree with you totally, they should respond and can understand your frustration, but that has nothing to do with your comment in post 15 telling others not to buy anything athena, they are crap, which is just not true.

That's the only part I was disagreeing with. I totally agree that you and others should at least get a response on the 6000 and amp issues with it, but since most if not all are out of warranty combined with changes with the company, who knows if there is even anyone at athena anymore, I don't see it happening.
Still no word back from them. I wonder if their service center has any contact info at the company.
Mine just went out also..... i'm guessing it's my sub...
Any luck w/ this?????

nothing from my end!
Sorry to hear about everyone's sub problems.

I also have an athena system, F2.2 in front, and B series bookshelfs in rear, with WS-60 center. I have them connected to a pioneer elite reciever. I am happy with the speakers so far, had them about a year. The athenas sound much better than my yamaha HTIB I had previously.

I was going to purchase p6000 recently to compliment the sytem, as I was happy with other athen speakes, and had heard good things about the sound of the p6000. But they do not sell them anymore, only the p4100. I have read of many people like yourselves having problems with their subs, and have seen tons of refurb athena subs for sale. It is usually the amp people are having problems with.

I am happy with with my athena speakers, but with problematic subs, buying out by another company, discontinuation of most of line up, and what sounds like a lack of customer support by many, i decided it might be best to hold up on buying any athena products for while.

So I opted to get the A2-300 from eD. It is around the same price, I paid $350, but they have a 10" model starts at $300. Much better quality build and sound than other subs at same price level. I use it for 90% home theatre and gaming. I am very happy with it so far.

Just a thought, in case you end up replacing your sub.

The build quality of their products is very good, as well as sound. You get a quality product for what you would pay for a better known brand name at same price. They also have excellent customer service(have answered all my emails promptly) as they are still a small company. I have also read people in this forum that had a problem with an eD sub, and eD was happy to correct the problem very quickly.

The only down side, is the speakers are built to order, so it takes a couple weeks to recieve them. They do however keep you updated as to what part of production your speakers are in at any given moment.

Hopefully athena/klipsch/? will step up and fix the subs, so none of you will have to buy a new one. Best of luck.

Congrats and thanks for posting, seems a lot of people are having problems finding info on warranty service, that contact should help.

I hope they corrected the amp defect in this one, it really is a great sounding sub - all the amp problems.
The guys as freeman said they thought there was 'a batch' of subs that went out that had problems... they said they replace the chips, the amps, and something else... and haven't had one returned... anyway - it's slightly depressing during some movies not having the sub... Can't wait for it to arrive...
I have had my P6000 since January 2006 and so far no problems (knock on head). If it ever goes, maybe I can talk the "boss" into an SVS or HSU. (no, not likely).
But for the $350 I paid for it and the $40, 9 year xtended warranty, still not too bad of a sub. If I get another year out of it, I will be ready for an upgrade.
Just a note to those with dead Athena 6000's that I brought mine back to life. Since I still had a doorstop with a nice box and a 12 inch woofer I decided to at least make use of it. I got a second hand subwoofer plate amp on E-Bay for around $50.00. I opened up the Athena and unclipped the old amp from the speaker and rather than drill some new holes ran new wires from the speaker out through the front port and then put the sub back together. I then attached the wires to the now "external" sub amp, attached my sub-out line to the amp, fired it up, ran some level tones and now have a working Athena 6000. The plate amp has 100-150 watts of power and so far sounds great. I placed the external plate amp which has a sealed back next to the Athena. May not be pretty but sure beats paying over $200 for repairs out of warranty.
I too have a broken amp on this sub.... 2nd time too
post #30 of 72
The 500w bash amp at PE should make a nice replacement for the Athena's as would the 500w from Oaudio. With a little work you should be able to retro these into the cabinets. A new rear baffle of 3/4 MDF routed to accept the repl amp then glued and screwed to the old baffle after the amp removed should do the trick. You could cover the repl baffle with Black Vinyl or Bed liner paint. These subs are definately worth saving. The driver used in these sounded incredible and played really low. The replacement amps listed are very reliable and should perform as well as the original amps without blowing up.
