+1, I'm really pleased with darkdune's custom settings. However, I have also noticed the excessive levels of green. If you can find a way to minimize this, please post your findings.

BTW, thanks, darkdune, for taking time to post your settings.

I know I am a little late to jump in on this, but having finally purchased a 40XBR4 (and my first LCD at that!) I used bpmurr's settings, and they look phenomenal. Thanks everyone!

Hey,

Glad to hear it. Do you mostly have upconverted Standard DVD for source material, or are you seeing good results with Blu-ray or HD-DVD too?

You may be slightly right about the Green. One movie I can think of as an example is Monsters, Inc. from Pixar. Mike Wazowski (Billy Crystal) looks a little too much like a "booger", but maybe that was the film-maker's intent ...

If you dial the color down a little bit, the Green may look a little more appropriate. You can also dial the G-Gain and G-Bias down a bit to see if it looks more to your liking.

i just traded in my 71 for this xb4r, ran through a bunch of calibrations. but i still cant see it as having better PQ than the 71, i am not bashing this tv at all. maybe its just my personal preference...i am trying to like this tv...it just seems to have a lot more motion blur and smearing and grainy areas than the 71....ughhhh i'm stumped

Thanks, they tend to please those who aren't into the D65 look. I'm always adjusting my set because I find a lot of the times its content dependant. More so on cable shows then games or movies.

You're very welcome!

I figure when ya spend as many bucks as we did (even with all those awesome payment plans, and discounts this past Holiday Season), and Sony gives you features and options...there should be a reason for it, right?

From my "upconverted Standard DVD" experience, it seems that the features many posts here have discouraged we employ actually make the upconverted Standard DVD stuff look better on these TVs. That is what I am seeing, and my gut says perhaps that was Sony's intent for these options. We all have a ton of DVD's already, and the upconversion process inherently adds image distortion by the "physics" of the process.

I am hoping for Blu-ray and HD-DVD that the enhancement features will no longer be needed for viewing that source material. Hey, thank God Sony gave us enough inputs! Each one can be calibrated to use. HDMI for upconverted DVD can be totally different from HDMI for Blu-ray or HD-DVD. Cool huh?

For Green, here is what I just posted a second ago again:

I will probably return to Irstevens421's settings when we get a PS3 next X-mas. Much thanks to him for helping us all!

I agree - so far I've been watching mostly HD, but I am going to have to tweak it a little bit for SD, I think.

I was watching Discovery HD via DirecTV and The Patriot on upconverted DVD.

My Blu Ray/HD DVD player arrives today.

I want to repeat that your settings made a big improvement, and I really appreciate it. I'll try your green tweaks tonight.

Your settings are based on this right? Thanks again for posting your settings, I have them as my Custom settings (Warm 1, though) and on Standard I have my settings which are similar to bpmurr's. Depending on what I'm watching I switch between the two, since the result is so different it's almost like having two TV's. I have to use my own settings for 360 since I use the VGA & PC input and the colors are very different compared to 360 via component. Eventually I'll get a PS3 and I'm looking forward to trying your settings with that and Blueray.

That's correct, although your results may not be the same as mine, it should serve as a good starting point.

HEY MUSCLERUNT

I did ur calibrations for my 40 xbr4 and i noticed that u put MODE 1, but when u activate that, the mode 1 itself is on zero for both reality and clarity. What numbers/configuration do i put the Reality & Clarity to?

Anyone helping would be appreciated Thanks

I've experimented extensively with DRC and find 40/60 gives the best result.

I tried all of the settings here including the cnet for my 40 xbr4. I found R.mntna to be one of the best BUT i took off turned off the the Live Color and put the Color Space to Standard and found the picture to look Much more natural looking and it doesn't have the slighlty reddish/pinkish/brightest push to it. But this is just my preference for OTA cable & for the Cable box. I have TWC. I put motion enh. to high and auto1 on since i didn't notice much difference with the auto2. With standard, u just don't get the that 3d feel like u do with motion enh. on high. I put the auto1 on with it because the manual clearly let's u know that auto 2 with CANCEL OUT the Motion enhancer so it's like u have it off so what is the point.

Also, the motion enhancer/auto1/2, 120hz, all that technology is not even going to work 100% of the time accurately anyway so u just need to get used to seeing a bit of judder here and there. If u read up about it u will find info stating this. But when it works, it looks nice

Hope this helps someone

My only issue is with the DRC palette and i can't find anything for the xbr4 showing what to put the reality and clarity on when i had Muscle's calibration.

Well I finally hooked up my new 46XBR5 and she's ugly..on regular satellite, guess I'll have to upgrade my satellite receiver to HD but being in Canada it doesn't appear Bell has receivers with HDMI which seems bizarre to me, fellow canucks can chime in on this as I haven't been to the store to check.

Hooked up the standard DVD player through components and thought the picture was amazing but a little too amazing..sure enough I didn't realize I had to apply separate settings on each input, it was on Vivid. I went with darkdune's cinema setting with a few tweaks from larone's and I think the picture is superb for SD DVD. Thanks guys for your contributions. I did get frame stutters with my test DVD (War of the Worlds) but when I reduced motion enhancer from High to Standard it seemed to help a great deal.

Oh by the way did I tell you I love this TV!

Compression effects fine detail, sharpness of the image, picture noise, color reproduction and shadow detail. This is why your Bluray movies look MUCH better than what the cable company is pumping out. Fios is the only cable provider that I've seen who deliver a crisp cable hi-def experience (no I don't work for verizon ).

BTW, it's not surprising that the 42" 720p Samsung looked better with a cable broadcast, a larger screen and more lines of resolution will amplify picture/source imperfections.

I can't tell you how many PM's I have with this question . I think I should just post them every couple of pages. Maybe we can reach out to the Op or Mods and get the favorite settings posted on the first page.
