Clouds... There was a minor case of clouding when this set was just out of the box and I was naturally disappointed. Interestingly however, with about 100 hours of use, they seem to have completely disappeared. I'm pleasantly surprised, but haven't heard of clouds going away after a break-in period. That was certainly not the case with the XBR2 this unit replaces.

I had exactly the same problem with mine as far as the clouding. When i first turned on the tv, I went "Yuck", look at all those clouds. Now after only about 20 hours of use, I cant find a cloud to save my life. Even in dark room its very hard to find any clouding at all so I'm happy with mine in that regard.

Edge Enhance helps makes text sharper in my eyes .......

Most likely the clouds have gone away because you are no longer using the out-of-box settings (Vivid mode with BL and Picture maxed out) but have instead dropped BL to 3 and Picture to 76 which lowers the LCD panel temp which in turn reduces clouds.

Sorry, but that assumption is completely incorrect. The set was calibrated at about hour 5 and I never watched it in Vivid mode.

Anybody can comment on these settings for hd tv? I tried them and they looked ok on my set.

Easy to try:

I put the settings on Standard, lowed BL to 5, Sharpness to 55, Live Clor - off,

and Power Savings - low.

P.S. My hd comes from basic feed from the wall (no box).

Hey guys, just got my 52XBR4 yesterday and am very pleased overall. However, the one thing I've been scratching my head over is how I can save different calibration settings for one device.

For example, on a PS3, I would like to have different settings for playing DVD/BD versus playing games. I prefer games to have a little more vibrant coloring and a bit more brightness.

I've got the PS3 in HDMI but I haven't found anything in the XBR4's manual on how to save a settings configuration and switch to it quickly.

Has anyone experienced this dilemma and/or solved it or found a workaround?

Yes, you're in luck ( w/ caveats )

See the "theater" button on your remote? That switches to "cinema" from ( I'm assuming ) "custom"

So, you can easily store two settings and switch between them. However, changing it doesn't seem to retain the "motion enhancer" setting, on my X3500 ( European XBR5 ).

If you're using your PS3 for Blu-rays, I'd recommend ensuring it's at 1080p/24, and using Auto1 for movies. Store that in "cinema" w/ ur preferred settings for film. Then turn film mode off in the "custom" and set w/ ur preferred settings for games.

RBG range set to FULL

Super-White to OFF but have been going back and forth on wether ON or OFF is better. I primarily keep it set to OFF though.

Hi all...thought i share with the rest of you folks my settings...for those of you who are familar with rainbow six: vegas on the ps3...the graphics pretty much sucks with standard and vivid modes...for example if you lean against a wall in a lightly shaded area (bordertown)...notice your guy or gal is completely black...!!!...so i calibrated my 40xbr4 through vegas and looks well for pretty much all...enjoy and let me know what you guys think...fyi thanks to those who posted settings...those helped me out a lot!!

It's hard to take anyone seriously that would spend this kind of money and even remotely consider watching in Vivid mode.

Hey all, I'm putting my new XBR4 through its paces and am getting frustrated trying to produce smooth motion on DVDs. If you have X2 (X-men 2) on DVD, skip to the second scene (where Wolverine is at the Reservoir) and (at the beginning of the scene) the camera will pan past a tree and a barb wire fence - the tree and barbs pan across very juttery/blurry unless I turn on Motionflow = high, and then it pans clear, but the fast action in other scenes, like the opening White House scene, seem a little bit sluggish. Contrary to HDGURU, motion flow has obvious effects, if he missed this I have doubts about the rest of what he says.

Settings are Picture = cinema, Motionflow = High, Cinemotion = auto 1.
I'm using a Samsung P1200 bluray player also.

If you don't have my TV but do have the movie, try it also just to report the results.

Also, what is the difference between Cinemotion auto 1 and 2?

I find that Cinemotion 2 works much better than 1.

I would have to agree with agent c...i find that auto 1 causes the screen to jutter like crazy...test auto 1 and 2 if you have rainbow six: vegas on ps3...you will definitely see the difference...i have mine on auto 2 and motion enhancer on high

Great tip, thnx. I've been wondering how to do the same thing. I just got a 40" XBR4 and PS3, and I'm really happy with the PS3's DVD upscaling (haven't tried a Bluray yet). I think I'm going to use game mode on with custom for games and then Cinema mode with a light amount of motion enh / cinemotion for movies.

Also just got DirectTV HD content and its amazing.

tried ps3 on game mode and my current settings motion enhancer high cinemotion on auto 2 (full list above)...both looks good to me, but i prefer to have the motion enhancer on

Hi, I have a 32xbr4. Is there a way to adjust the RGB levels and biases?? I can't see that in the screen menu (no White Balance under advanced settings!!!!).

whats the difference between auto 1 and auto 2 with cinemotion? Can you tell the difference?

The difference between Motion Enhancer and CineMotion.

Answer:
Applicable to LCD Televisions sold in Taiwan only

Motion Enhancer and CineMotion are two different processes that provide smoother picture movement.

For regular use, it is recommended to set Motion Enhancer to Standard mode and CineMotion to Auto 1 mode.

Motion Enhancer:

Provides smoother picture movement and reduces picture blurring with additional (interpolated) frame.

Available Motion Enhancer settings:

High - Provides smoother picture movement, such as for film videos.
Standard - Provides smoother picture movement for regular usage.
Off - This setting is to be used when High and Standard settings result in noise.

Note:

- Motion Enhancer is not available when Game Mode is set to On, or for a PC input source.

- Depending on the video, the effect may not be seen visually, even if the setting has been changed.

- When Theatre Mode is selected, Motion Enhancer is set to Off by default.

CineMotion:

Provides smoother picture movement when playing images taken on film, reducing picture blurness and graininess.

Available CineMotion settings :
Auto 1 - Provides smoother picture movement than the original film video, for regular usage.
Auto 2 - Provides the original film video as it is.

Note:

- If the image contains an irregular signal or too much noise, CineMotion will automatically turn off even if Auto 1 or Auto 2 is selected.

Anyone care to take a crack at interpreting this?

So the question is really what's the difference between Cinemotion Auto 2 and Off.

Maybe Auto 1 is trying to reprocess an already progressive output or something, or is designed to process a standard DVD not an upconverted 1080p signal? And Auto 2, takes the signal as is, so no second processing, but doubles it to 120 fps?

And Off does nothing? Who knows, why don't manufacture's give better instructions!

seriously...i been trying to find, in depth, details as to what auto1 and auto2 does...no luck...perhaps the next step is to give Sony a ring a ding ding =P anyone care to try?!? all i know is auto1 causes artifacts...very noticable on the ps3 playing vegas (bordertown - rotate the view constantly and you'll see it) so i tried the next option auto2 and looks fine to me and been using it ever since...can't tell a difference between off and auto2

I used Coma42 setting and it looks so nice tone down alot from Vivid mode.

I saw this OLD Sony post - but it's still applicable to our new XBR4s.

" The DRC Palette is one of the TV's more-amusing features. In a square box, you can adjust the amount of reality (on the vertical axis) and clarity (on the horizontal axis). Can you imagine what life would be like if you had a feature like this in the real world? Is life bringing you down? Decrease your reality setting. Can't make a decision? Crank up your clarity. I can think of a few nights out when my clarity was way too low. Back in the TV world, the reality setting seems to adjust the amount of edge enhancement, while the clarity setting handles noise reduction and smoothes out less-than-perfect signals (like most people's cable feed) quite well. "

Any of you old school Sony users understand this little BOX of reality/clarity ?
I played with it until my thumbs hurt...
