Pio 5080 - Overwhelmed

Thread Starter
I have had the Pioneer for little over 2 weeks and all I can say is I am overwhelmed by the picture.

I use Dish network DVR 625 and the following settings by D-Nice (god bless his soul) for excellent results.

Main Menu:
AV Selection: User
Contrast: 34
Brightness: +2 (Day) 0 (Night)
Color: -10
Tint: Green 2
Sharpness: +1

Pro Adjust
Pure Cinema
Film Mode: Off
Text Optimization: On
Picture Detail:
DRE Picture: Low
Black Level: Off
ACL: Off
Enhancer Mode: 2
Gamma: 3
Color Detail:
Color Temp: Low
CTI: Off
Noise Reduction:
3DNR: Low
Field NR: Off
Power Save Mode: Off
Orbiter: On

But, that is not the only way I am overwhelmed. I am trying to find out what DVD player to use with it and how to use it.

I was thinking about getting the Opps 980 but the DVD forum seems to imply that the 5080 does a better job of scaling and than most of the sub $200 players. Is it true? Should I just feed it 480p over HDMI? If not - what should I feed it 1080i? 1080p?

I have tried to go through the 1400+ posts in Kuros thread but have been overwhelmed by the amount of information.

Thank You All

That's always the big conundrum with these things. You get a great TV then you have to upgrade everything else!

I personally went with a PS3 which gives you the option of Blu Ray and DVD upconversion. Oh and it plays games too...

Theres a whole set of new Players going to be out in the next month or so. The new HD-DVD and Blu Ray players are supposed to be dropping in price, and they do great dvd upscaling as well.

If its a cost based decision, then the Oppo is a good buy.

Congrats on the new Pio 5080 purchase. A very wise choice.

Agree wholeheartedly re: going the High Def DVD player route. PS3 is a good unit for the money, or for $100- $150 more than an Oppo you can get a Toshiba HD DVD (check Value Electronics, a forum sponsor) which is fantastic video/ audio quality that also nicely upconverts SD DVD. You can rent Blu-ray or HD DVD discs online from Netflix or Blockbuster for $20/mo.

Just a note on the Toshiba HD DVD players: They are unable to scale non-anamorphic (4:3) DVDs. The KUROs do not have a "size" mode which can display non-anamorphic letterbox DVDs in the correct aspect ratio.

You will need to keep your old DVD player if you have any of these movies. I am hoping the new A3x series will have a zoom feature. But, for now, I am sticking to my old 480i player.

I use an Oppo 981 together with a 5080 and am delighted with the combination. I'd recommend it over the 980 which eschews the Faroudja chip. The 981 is one of the few DVD players in the $200 range that may have better processing than the 5080.

That said, if your old DVD player still works well, the Pioneer's processing is good enough that you will be content with it until you are ready to enter the HD/BD fray. If your player is a modestly priced model, I'd set it at 480i and let the Pioneer do all the processing. (FWIW, I use 1080p with my Oppo.)

FYI...The PS3 does not upconvert normal dvd's. The play at 480p.

Ugh, your comments like this in the other thread are misleading.

The Toshiba players CAN play them you will just have letterboxing on all sides of the movie. Really not that big of a deal considering these players are primarily HD-DVD players. Most DVDs will look just fine with a Toshiba player.

the PS3 does upconvert regular DVD's to 1080i or 720p"software upgrade which has been out for months now", where have you been.

I must agree that you should just spring for an HD-A2--it has very good upscaling abilities, and you could get a nice selection of HD DVDs to boot. Even if HD DVD fails, you will still have a very nice upconverter.

Or you could spring for a Blu-Ray player. The PS3 does upconvert over HDMI.

This is the first time I have seen this about the HD-DVD players. I watch a lot of old TV series DVDs. I have the Pio 6070 and I am using an older Pioneer DVD player (can't remember the model number off hand, but it's the one that plays SACDs and DVD Audio), and I have it set to 480i, feeding the 6070 on component input, and on a decent quality DVD, the picture looks very good on the 6070. I have the DVD player set to widescreen, but in doing this, it stretches all of the 4:3 content to 16:9. If I got the Toshiba, will the 4:3 TV shows just have the side bars, but still have the good upscaling?

That is not true, there was an update a long while back to enable this function. The Xbox360 upconverts via HDMI and VGA.

So you buy a panel that "Overwhelms" you with what you love and then you settle for a "Less Than" DVD player. That is not logical - my Oppo has gone unused since I bought an HD DVD and now BD 1200. The HD DVD matches any SD upconvert the Oppo could do and no way any Oppo can match either HD DVD Player at what it does best and a Netflix membership lets you draw from both libraries with no price increase.

You loved using the term "Overwhelmed" so why settle for a less than experience of the Oppo for so little money. My Oppo cannot match either of my players. Be Overwhelmed with your DVD Player get an HD version of your choosing.

Personnally, I found that with 5080 I had a hard time telling with upconversion DVD's and 480 comming from a standard DVD. The TV does a real good job of upconverting. I would just use the money towards High Definition player. That is what I did. HTH

Alright. Alright. I am sold. I am getting a HD DVD.
How can a gentleman with double 69 in his handle be wrong. But even that can be overwhelming at times. You know it

OMG- The Oppo I was getting was for 169. And the Toshiba is for 238. You guessed it - a $69 difference!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I strongly recommend the Toshiba XA-2 instead of the A2. Only the XA-2 will do a better job than the Oppo with standard DVDs. The Reon chip does make a difference and you will see the improvement on the Pio. You have a great display, don't settle for anything but the best.

I got a PS3 a couple of weeks ago for this very reason. Re the gaming - I'm getting tired getting beat by kids fifty years younger than I.

You don't have get no HD-DVD player and buy into the idiotic format war. Boycott both until you have a winner. There's only a handful of titles anyway. Most of the titles available today, such as the 5th Element, you have seen them a gazillion times. Don't waste your money. Be intelligent!!
