Firefly in HD on Universal HD. HD-DVD set?

I've been watching Firefly on Universal HD, and it looks absolutely amazing. Anyone know if they're planning to release these series on HD-DVD? It would be cool to get a box-set with the Firefly series and a reissue of Serenity.

The DVD set was distributed by Fox, so I doubt we will see a HD DVD box set of it.

Too bad huh? I just caught the show on UHD the other day and my eyes nearly popped out of my head.

I guess i'll just have to pony up for an HD Tivo.

Doubt we'll see it on HD unless FOX goes HD or Universal buys the rights Firefly. They might if they ever plan on making Serenity 2 the Reckoning . Fingers crossed.

The other possibility depends on who has the foreign distribution rights?

I just watched "Objects in Space" last night, and honestly, it was stunning in upconverted glory on my A1. While I would absolutely buy Firefly in HD-DVD, I'm not going to commit hari-kari if I don't have it for a while. What a great show....

But the bitrate on the UHD episodes is pretty abysmal and they should be ashamed of allowing it to be broadcast this way. Come on 8-10Mbps??? WTF

Firefly is one of my favorite shows ever... but it honestly looks pretty crappy on Universal HD. I'm not in any rush to upgrade, if that's what I'm getting.

Looks pretty great on my TWC system....

I'd buy the set in a hearbeat. Hell, I'm going to buy the reissue of Serenity on DVD tomorrow for no apparent reason...

I caught some of Firefly on UHD, and I thought it looked horrible. My original intent was to DVR it. But after about 30 minutes of "Serenity", I turned the DVR off. The SD DVD set upconverted looked better. I would really like to see this series on BD or HD-DVD. But as was already pointed out, this series is FOX. So no telling if we'll ever get it in HDM.

Wow, I actually like my SD DVD boxset as previously mentioned, it looks pretty dang nice upscaled. However, if the series comes out on HD DVD, then I will definitely be getting it. Otherwise, I will just look forward to recording it off cable when I get UHD.

Glad to know it wasn't just me. I just watched "Trash" the other night (not sure when it recorded), and I thought it looked horrible, nowhere near HD quality. The story was great (had seen it before), but the PQ was no better than upscaled DVD... If even that good.

I'm sure Universal would do a great job if they were able to release it on HD DVD. If not, I'll stick with the normal boxset.

Last time I checked UHD on my TWC system (a few months ago) it was overly compressed. I got all of FireFly from usenet in HD and it looks much better, but also from UHD. Obviously it depends on what your cable operator does to fit it on the wire..

edit: I should note that in the past few weeks TWC updated our system, ditching the the A+B system, presumably increasing the plant bandwidth (some things I have noticed look better despite all on one cable), and moved (I think) a bunch of channels to digital only (instead of simulcast or analog only). So I suspect if I go watch something on UHD it'll look better now..

I dunno, it looked spectacular on my 50" Plasma. Just maybe a bit lower quality than a nice HD-DVD movie.

I've heard lots of people complain about Comcast HD, but honestly, it looks REALLY GOOD. (at least in my neck of the woods)

I work in HD post production and see uncompressed sources nearly every day, so I really do know what I'm talking about.

Not only does it not look stellar, there's no 5.1 sound, at least not where I'm at.

Since the Firefly set is still fairly high on the Amazon seller list (#109) and had sold several hundred thousand back before Serenity, I'm surprised Fox doesn't do this one set just to make the money that would inevitably follow.

I for one would buy it again in HD, and if ther rest of the Browncoats out there did the same, Fox would be looking at close to 30million in sales. What's not to like?

So the question is, just like before, how do we petition Fox?

I'd buy a high definition (BD or HD, doesn't matter to me!) set of Firefly just as fast as the next guy... but if I recall, the special effects were rendered in 480i, and only the live action was shot in high definition? Just curious.

Same thought here, the SD DVD set is excellent quality.
Pretty much what I've seen with the BSG SD DVD set's too. I only bought the 1st season of BSG on SD DVD because I knew eventually the whole smash would be released on HD-DVD, although I would probably double-dip on the 1st season BSG on HD-DVD just to fill out my collection.
If Firefly does come to HD-DVD, there's no question that I would double-dip/invest in the new set.

I have been watching the UHD broadcasts from the beginning over DirecTV and they put the DVDs to shame in both picture and especially sound. I have a good upconverting player, too. Even the specials effects sequences, which are upconverted themselves, look better (maybe because of less compression?)

I hate to burst bubbles, especially this one since i love Serenity also, but... If you watch the extras on the boxed set of the series you get a fairly clear idea that the budget was such that SD quality was all they could afford when the series was made (for SD TV), meaning that FX shots would really need to be re-done and a 5.1 soundtrack remastered. Being as how the price of the SD DVD set dropped from Sold Out @ $39 to littering the aisles at $17~19.99.

I'm not sure there is enuff profit in that venture even if Uni did get the rights, considering the remaster costs.

Um, It's still selling for $39 at Amazon and selling at #109 for DVDs. I'd say that for several years after it's release, that's pretty good.

I admit, that's inspiring. I'm glad to hear it is still selling well @ Amazon. I bought my last (2nd Copy) at Target for $17.99, which it sells everyday for $19.99. Which is great, I would think more people will buy it @ $20 than $40. It seems weird Amazon has not dropped their price. I based my (sales) comments purely on my own experiences.

No worries on sales, the set is still selling well in many places. Had a friend who worked at Best Buy, said they put more on the shelf just about every day. Not to mention it was the strenght of the DVD sales that got Serenity made.

I compared the UHD broadasts to the DVD, and I couldn't detect the slightest difference. I'm sure an HD-DVD or Blu Ray set will look better, and I'll happily buy it. Even without upgrading the sound to 5.1, how about PCM 2.0?
