PS3 won't hook up via HDMI cords into my Pioneer receiver

HELP!
I recently purchased a Pioneer VSX-917V-K 7.1 channel home theater receiver to hook up my PS3 and Satellite receiver to my Optoma projector. I have no picture or sound when hooking it up via HDMI cable. I can plug the HDMI from the projector directly into the PS3 and all is fine but have to switch the HDMI cable back to my receiver every time I want to watch satellite TV. Also, I had to hook up component cords for the sound to come through even when conneting thru HDMI. I have gone in and reset the HDMI settings on Audio and video in the PS3 menu but only the video works when by-passing the receiver. My satellite receiver works fine when hooked up via HDMI cord thru the receiver. I have contacted Pioneer about the problem and they say that I need a firmware upgrade from Sony. I have called the Sony customer service line several times but cannot get through, it tells me to call back at a later time and I have called all hours of the day. Does anyone know anything about this or have any ideas as to a solution? Do I need to get a Sony receiver to be able to display thru HDMI?

Yes, I have adjusted the settings on the receiver as you said. Do you have a Playstation 3 hooked thru HDMI on yours? My satellite receiver is working fine going thru the HDMI and the Playstation works great when plugged directly into the projector but will not work thru the receiver. If you have a PS3 hooked up then it must not be the receiver. Like I said when I called Pioneer, they said they were aware of the problem but I would have to talk to Sony about it. I would even be willing to send the Pioneer back and get a Sony receiver if I knew that would solve the problem but do not want to spend the postage and restocking fees to end up with the same issue.
