Official Sony XBR4/5 Owners Thread(NO PRICE TALK) - Page 8

Could someone run a quick motion test? I am curious as to just how much this new 120hz actually improves motion. The test is very simple start up a 1080p 60fps native game (Ninja Gaiden Sigma for PS3 is the best option for this test) Now start a new game and fight your way to the spot where 2 ninja ambush you from above after climbing up the log (finish them off first).

Now comes the test, on a CRT no matter how fast you swing the camera the trees in the background NEVER lose any detail. I am curious as to how much detail will be lost vs. an old CRT HDTV. (I have a old Sanyo 28 inch HDTV that handles this scene perfectly and have yet to see any flat panel come close to matching it.) It might also be a good idea to try out NGS on a CRT first just so you have a reference point since some people don't notice the loss of detail until they have seen a CRT handle it.

Here is a thread about motion blur on LCDs that might be an interesting read through for those interested in LCD motion blur and just how big of a problem it really is.

Thanks to anyone willing to try this out.

I've been playing with my 40" XBR4, and I changed HDMI cables for MY XA2 which is HDMI 1.3, I changed to a BetterCables, silver serpent 1.3 compliant cable and the 120Hz motion enhancer seems much better. The picture is amazing almost 3d it's so clear.

Can anyone confirm the 120hz thing, that has hdmi 1.3 cables?

How does the scaler on the XBR4 compare against the HQV Reon VX for SD channels?

Thank you.

there is my first pic. Riddick, taken from 2.5 feet, no tripod on my Toshiba XA2, and 40XBR4. Still Calibrating.

Can't wait to get my BD/HD DVD setup going now.

Alba > Biel, sorry But don't get me wrong - I'd still let either of them have their way with me...

...but getting back on topic, does anyone know what the MSRP on the 52" is in Canada? I've checked the SonyStyle.ca website, but the 52" XBR4 isn't listed. The 52" XBR3 is listed at $5299 (), though - I pray that the 4 isn't as much! (the 46" XBR4 is $3600, so I was expecting the 52" to go for around $4300...)

One of the rules of these threads is "NO PRICE TALK". If the moderators find that the thread topic has been derailed by pricing discussions, they'll typically warn once, and if the discussions persist, will close the thread.

True, and I did notice that schlick - but from what I've read on this forum, talking about MSRP is OK - it's talking about the great deal you got at company X that isn't. If this isn't OK though, I'll gladly edit my post and remove the question...

I don't think anyone wants this thread ended like it was a few days ago because of price talk. Ask someone to PM you if you want to know pricing. Don't list prices on this thread.

All the prices I listed in that post are the MSRPs, right from the Sony website. I included those for comparison sake - should I still remove them?
Yes, you can talk about MSRP but no discount price, coupon, or where to buy it.

I can give this a try for you tonight, but I can tell you that I've played the demo since getting my 46XBR4 and it looked just stunning. I have been playing it since it came out at 1080i on my old non-dlp rptv (crt based) and when I played it on the XBR I noticed no degradations like you mentioned, I could have just been in awe of the 1080p texture detail (Mt. Fuji from the dojo exterior looks completely 3d), but it looked awesome and was a pleasure to play. I may have been in game mode when I did it, but last night I found that turning cinemotion to Auto2 and motion flow to standard lets you not have to switch to game mode and keeps your timing correct. CM on Auto1 made you have to run game mode for precise timing.

This calibration takes a long time. Not like the V2500, but so far its worth the effort of all the fine tuning, I'll post my results for cable and Hd DVD. and take more pics

Please do. Also when you do, list your equipment. If you have an AVR that the signal is passing through please let us know.

I don't think anyone could possibly answer that at this early stage.

What I am looking for in these tests is the loss of fine detail, even plasma has trouble with this test (the plasma keeps detail in slow pans but still can't handle faster movement like a CRT can) I think that only DLP comes close to CRT at this point when it comes to fine details and motion.

When moving the camera pay very close attention to the leaves of the trees in the background, on a set that can't handle the motion it looses a lot of detail (as I said earlier even plasma cant beat this test) so that is where you should focus your attention when preforming the test.

That's the cable I used so I'll try again tonight with that program to get data.

What's the best way to test for dead pixels on one of these sets? I've heard of a program called Dead Pixel Buddy -- is that the one to use? And how (i.e., with what cable) would I connect a Dell laptop to a 52XBR4 to test the set?

Ok, I need some other owners help. I've posted a few times about this but I think it's been looked over. If someone could put up solid dark gray background (windows desktop is what I used) and then adjust the backlighting from max to min or vice versa. When I do this I notice horizontal bands going across the set that move up and down depending on the backlight settting. I just want to find out if this is normal operation or not. Thanks!

Ok. Here is my HD DVD Setup. I Use a no frills connection, but I have noticed, quality cables make a difference with this TV. With Scientific Atlanta CableBox DVR, Component is much much better than HDMI, not even close. IF you have the 8300HD model, dont even attempt the HDMI connection, with any TV. USe component.

Here is my simple list:

40XBR4
Scientific Atlanta Cable DVR 8300HD
Toshiba XA2 HD DVD Player
Yamaha YSP 800 DSP
Oppo 971H (unused in months since XA2)

I also own a Sony STR_DG910 receiver with Infinity TSS-450 7.1 Speakers, but not currently using for this setup, may change it though.

I believe the problem is with your Cable Box, not with the TV.
Search Google and you'll find stuff about known issues with HDMI on your cable box...

Stuff like this:
There is a known issue with the 8300HD and HDMI in the 8300HD user manual. (Go to Scientific Atlanta's Explorer Club to download the manual and discussion of HDMI). If you select the HDMI output, when you switch to a non HD channel you need to switch to component output since they are in 480i. Sometimes the 8300HD will remember the settings and automatically stretch the video, sometimes it will not. It is best to not leave your HD monitor on if you are not watching it in case it forgets to stretch the non-HD channels. If you always use component video you will have to over ride the component settings of the 8300HD or it will up convert all 480i channels to 1080i (obviously with no improvement of video quality). Dan already talked about using the "#" shortcut to stretch non HD channels. Also, the unit will not automatically stretch all 4:3 HD broadcasts; just watch HD HBO - all HBO intros are 4:3 but the movies will be shown in 16:9 (unless the show is recorded/broadcast in 4:3 aspect ratio like most network HD broadcasts, you can select to stretch those too). Hmmm... Try pressing the Settings button twice. There should be one for Audio output. What does that say currently? If you were to change it, what are your options? There might be something in there that you will have to change .

Here is the Lord of the Rings Fellowship of the ring, standard DVD, on the 40XBR4 and XA2, so I can't get it to pause clearly but you can still get the idea of the quality of the rendering.

What is the second HDMI port on Input 3 used for? It is shown with a small triangle looking symbol next to it (see page 12 of manual) and on page 17 of the manual they show several ways to connect devices but they never show the port being used. I know the XBRs have three (3) HDMI inputs but if you count the one I'm referring to there are four (4). Input 1 has one (1), Input 2 has one (1) on the side and Input 3 has two (2).

Am I missing something? I admit I haven't read everything in the manual but this caught my attention.

Thanks in advance...

LOL this confused me as well....but it just a pic of an HDMI port, that looks real in the manual. There are only 3. So Input 3 has one HDMI port and a pic of HDMI port.
