Originally Paramount was to be HD DVD exclusive. Then Sony/BR paid them big bucks to go neutral for 1 year. I am sure they realized that the $ they would make that first year from HDM formats would be close to zero, so they took the free money. I mean after all, some of the catalog titles have only sold a few thousand copies. Where is the money in that?
So now that year of BD support has ended, and both formats still have a teeny tiny market share. What is a studio to do? How about pick up some more free money, and support the format you liked in the first place!
Way to go Paramount. You played this one perfectly, and maybe in a year or so, that Sony guy will come back with a bigger suitcase of cash just to go neutral.
