I'm very skeptical of burn in. I Have 12 headphones, and not once heard a 'burn in' improvement. I believe it's more likely that your brain has adjusted to the sound of the headphones..Like hearing a song you don't like at first, but when you hear it enough times it grows on you. I know a member of the trade who is very bright with headphones. He says the diaphragm does loosen over time. The break in period, but sonic improvement would be minimal at best. Of course, to please his customers he recommends a burn in time for headphones.. But he is not a strong believer in headphone burn in. I have yet to see Grado/Sennheiser/Beyerdynamic market burn in to entice their customers with a sound that keeps on improving.

Update on the MixAmp.....

For some reason the mixamp runs my DT880's fine now. There is no more distortion at loud volumes. Weird. I have to turn the volume to max, with the small knob turned down to 9 or 10 O'Clock to get a sufficient sound lvl. Plus the buzzing has went away.

The main difference between the DH with the mixamp and the DH with the Pioneer unit, is spaciousness and fuller sound with the Pioneer DH. But the mixamp does focus on mids better. For competitive gaming the mixamp is better. But the Pioneer DH is more enjoyable.

You can simply play music through them continuously. Some prefer using pure tones, sine wave sweeps, pink noise, or AM/FM static for burn in. Some recommend using bass heavy music. The method of burning in a headphone does not change depending on model or manufacturer.

Thats taken from a stickied thread that explains it better than I can. Here is the link.

Got my DT48e 25ohm Sat. Love would to track down the original 1937 cir 48 model, and the 48s model.

I just tried out the TB X4's today and... i was not impressed. I assumed that they would perform a lot better, but that was not the case.

Cons:
- Not enough volume
- A LOT of hissing at any vol lvl
- Small soundstage
- Sound quality is all around bad (mids, highs, detail, bass)
- All plastic
- Small ear cups (outer ear doesn't fit completely in)

Pros:
- DH (good positioning but bad acoustics)
- Comfortable

And the sad thing is, the trittons sound worse then these.

I'm surprised how much better a good pair of stereo headphones along with a good DH receiver/unit sounds. With just the Astro MixAmp and a pair of DT880 or K601's, the difference in quality is astounding.

Count me in as another happy camper with the AD700/MixAmp combo. Soundstage is huge and the DH positioning is more accurate than I expected. I'm using a crappy clip-on PC mic from the late '90s and it works fine. My kills in COD5 have gone up - it's awesome to hear someone sneaking up behind you or know just where they are behind a wall.

I just ordered the A40 combo..

MLG Edition - A40 Audio System
Headset Frame Color: Black
Add Optional Astro Speaker Tag Set?: No
Add Rechargeable Battery Pack?: Yes - $19.95
Add TOSlink Optical Cable?: No Thanks
A40 Audio System / MLG Edition - $249.95

I've been wanting them forever, so fock it.. pulled the trigger. Wanted to go the AD700/Mixamp route.. but just couldnt get over the look of the AD700's and complaints about their fitment because of the wings. Also the built in mic sealed it for me.. one less freakin wire to worry about. I actually already ordered the Zalmann mic a couple of months ago.. paid $6 for it shipped.. so no biggie there.

What really pushed me off the fence.. was the amazing resale value of these things. I've watched A40 combos on Ebay sell for $240-260 on a daily basis.. with upwards of $30 in shipping fees. Which is crazy considering they only cost $250 to begin with.. and ground shipping was $12 bucks for me. Why people would pay more for someone's used shyt I have no idea.

Atleast I know if I get them, dont like them. I can get rid of them pretty easy. Considering how much I play COD4.. and COD4-II on the way. I get the feeling I'll be holding onto these.

Congrats Daekwan. However 2 things. First I think the rechargeable batteries are a waste of money unless you have a very unique setup like crew or plan to travel with them.

USB works great for me and many of my friends. Secondly......you should've looked at some of my previous post or said you were going to pull the trigger. I could've saved you 10% or roughly the shipping cost.

Giants.. you already pm'ed me the coupon code.. I didnt want to post it in this thread because I didnt know if it would get you in trouble or not. But thanks man.. definitely saved me 10%.. knocked $26.99 off the price.

Haha, yeah I just realized I did. 99% of the guys from my clan already have the Headphones so I'm being a little liberal with it. I just want help our guys here because if I let it go out to wide I'm sure they will take it down.

It's the second discount code my clan got. The first one we had was for about 20-25% but that one expired already and my clan leader was able to get another one. It seems to be lasting quite a while also.

I need a new pair of headphones and would like to get a pair for under $100. I don't need them to be "gaming headphones" just good quality headphones.

I've heard that wireless IR headphones can cause distortion with plama tv's so I would need a different kind of wireless technology.

Wireless RF headphones cause background hiss. So you have to choose between dropouts with IR or hiss with RF.

Is it really not possible to run a wire?

actually, what he was saying is that plasma tv's emit a crazy amount of IR... and you'll have much worse results trying to use IR headphones if you have a plasma.
I was also getting a little distortion with A40 mixamp (and AD700's) mainly during some cutscenes like when the ships start flying in the Killzone 2 intro movie. I had the little game/voice knob all the way turned to Game. Turning that to the center (12 oclock) and turning up the big knob more (from about 9-10 oclock to 12-1 oclock) seems to have gotten rid of the crackling/distortion.
Ha, i have to turn the large volume knob to max, and the small knob to 9 - 10 o'clock. Must be the ohm difference between headphones.

Yes, I know. I bought the Pioneer IR headphones and my 58" plasma made them useless. It causes audio dropouts since it loses sync with the base. Sent them back and went wired and then later fished wires through the walls connected to wall plates on each side of the room.

I also tried RF headphones and had too much background hiss.

I've been following this post for awhile and used it to make my purchasing decision between the X4's and the A40 system.

I went ahead with the A40 system and headset and I couldn't be happier. The DH sound is spot on and the mic works great on xbox live. I have a pair of BD DT770's and when comparing them to the a40 headset, there wasn't a huge difference. I was playing resident evil 5 yesterday and forgot that I had the headset on, and thought I was listening to my 5.1 speaker setup and started yelling at my girlfriend who promptly told me I was an idiot and I had headphones on.

For people on the fence, the A40 quality is excellent, from the packaging to the sound itself. Everything feels well put together and I would definitely recommend them. And for people not wanting the headset, I would definitely say the sound is not bad compared to higher quality headphones. It certainly beats having to clip on a zalman mic.

I just ordered the astro a40's with the mix amp (which i think it should be the only way to order) they should be coming in 3 days and i read on another forum that this headphones have the ability to let you hear your own voice, so you can monitor how loud you are speaking. Now for the proud owners of the astro system, is this true?
My Astro's will be here in less than 4 hours!!

tracking them on the UPS website now

i'm sure you could monitor your voice using the mp3 input, though i'm not sure exactly how it'll work... maybe just split the cable from the microphone and run it to the input, unless the mixamp allows you to monitor out of the box.
I think what he is saying is that your voice thats picked up in the mic.. is automatically added back into the game chat sound mix.. along with the other players and their mics. That way you can tell if you are talking too loud or too soft when participating in game chat. I do not believe there is a way to adjust your mic sensitivity or volume of your voice played back.

which is why you'd piggy back it to the mp3 input, then you could control it
post #3083 of 10626
I dont think there is a volume control for the mp3 input though. I could be wrong, but Ill know for sure in about 3 hours.. mine are waiting for me.. new in the box.. :0)
ahh, you may be right. i assumed you could mix mp3 in with one of the dials, but i haven't looked into it and could be wrong.

This is true - if a mic is plugged into the MixAmp, you'll hear what it picks up through your headphones. I don't think there's a way to adjust the level, but it's enough to keep you from shouting.

It may seem obvious (it wasn't to me), but the mic is mixed into the headphones whether a game controller is plugged into the MixAmp or not. I've been using the setup for late-night TV watching and moving around in the recliner will generate a 'scritch' sound from the clip-on mic.

Great guys, thanks for your input on this. I have the tritton axpro and i am actually very disapointed on them. sound quality it's ok, but the mic on xbox live is very bad. I had the turtle beach x3 ( they are dead now and the hiss got worsed everyday)but something i liked from them was to be able to listen to your voice when talking on xbox live. i hope the astros are better than the axpros and the x3.

You cannot even monitor, or change the voice chat volume level of other players. All the mixamp does is give the the ability to adjust the game volume - the voice chat always stays at the same volume.

Also the voice feedback that you hear changes the more you turn the small dial to the right. When it is all the way left, there is no voice feedback.

hmmmm... so cant you just adjust it down, and adjust the master up? isnt that the same thing?

The mixamp lets you adjust both volumes (game and voice), as long as you have the voice set to "play through headset" and not "play through speakers".

My review of the Astro A40 combo.. Im not a geeky dude so excuse if my review is about as layman and unprofessional as layman and unprofessional gets:

Here is my background..

I've played using Beyer DT100's I borrowed from work.. connected through my 8 year old Sony reciever. And it definitely lets you locate the sound. I wont say its the most accurate thing in the world.. because the sound is neither 5.1 nor designed expressly for gaming. I have also bought/tried two different 5.1 gaming specific headsets and used both with COD4. The $99 Tritton AX360 headset & $199 Turtle Beach X4.

The AX360's had way to many wires, way too many volume controls and sound way to tinny. It felt like the sounds were comin through a soda can. Even worse there was no bass. The materials did feel quality though.

The X4 on the other hand felt cheap as shyt. It felt like a $29 headphone.. instead of a $199. Which to say the sound surprised the hell outta me.. there was alot more more full sound.. with actual bass. And the 5.1 was pretty accurate.. but they are IR and line of sight was a HUGE problem. The wireless also meant there was a slight buzzing noise the whole time. When out of sight, the noise was so bad it could completely drown out the game sound if you turned your head or moved from in front of the reciever.

So being a headphone noob.. I figured it was smart to start with the cheapest option first.. I spent $99 bucks and it sucked. Returned those and went with the middle option next.. $199 bucks and it somewhat still sucked. The X4's would be perfect if they were A) Wired.. B) $99 instead of $199. Now I'm at the point where I just spent $255 for the best gaming headset money can buy. Considering the A40 combo is MLG sponsored, used during Pro gaming events & every review site I've read has given it a solid 10.. I was pretty sure Im gonna get my moneys worth this time.

Here is when I recieved & used the headphones:

We all know the Astro packaging its bomb. Which is was. Ordered the Black frame, MLG edition. Got sent the regular White edition. So I was a little blown there. Couldnt really enjoy the packaging, after being bummed out they sent the wrong colour, regular edition. 5 minute call to Astro fixed that though, they are sending me the Black frames tomorrow.. with return label for the white frames. And will send the MLG speaker tags as soon as in stock. So all is well that ends well.

Performance wise.. I gotta say these headphones are the real deal. I've played with headphones before. I've played with 5.1 surround before. I've played with other gaming headphones before. There was always a weakness. Always something missing or lacking. Always something.

With the Astro's there is none. The only complaint I can possible think of is all the wires. There are 1 wire from headset to mixamp, 1 from controller to mixamp, 1 USB wire from mixamp to 360, 1 TOSHLINK/Opt from mixamp to 360. But the mixamp sits on the floor about 5 feet from me. The controller is in my hands. And the headphones have a quick disconnect feature that allows to me to get up and run to the bathroom or fix another drink inbetween rounds.

I gotta say this is $255 bucks I probably should spent along time ago.. considering how much COD4 I play. And how much more involved these headphones make you in the game. For the first time ever, I can identify sounds in the game as to what they are.. and where they are coming from. I watch ALOT of Military Channel and I think this shyt is called "situational awareness". Meaning you just know what the fock is goin on.

Its more than just knowing someone is sneaking up on you and trying to knife you in the back or get a cheap headshot. Its that so many little things that you used to get me killed doesnt happen anymore:

1) Running past a camper, or hearing somebody walk on the roof above you, or you camping and hearing someone coming from a specific side.
2) I can hear grenades falling around me. You throw a grenade at me I can tell you if landed in front, to which side or behind me.
3) I know where the enemy chopper is at ALL times on the map, without having to look for it.. and so now I know when and how to hide from it.
4) When I turn a corner and Im getting shot at.. I hear exactly which direction the bullets are coming from and can try to either take cover and fire in that direction.
5) Running in open space on large maps I can hear the sniper rifle and where the shot is coming from. I can then take cover immediately.
6) Most importantly.. I am immersed in the game. Vision & Sound is 100% focused on COD4. Living in apt.. I cant crank my 5.1 reciever up enough to hear the sounds listed above. And even if I could.. they would feedback into the mic. So I usually play with the TV sound on.. and very normal level.. which gives you none of the surround feedback you see listed above.

There is no doubt these headphones make me a better player.. mainly because Im more aware and more focused on whats going on in the game. I highly recommend them to anyone who is a COD4 or FPS fanatic!!

P.S.
Also want to add that I hear my teammates alot clearer. And in both ears. So when someones "Daekwan.. its a guy behind you". Or that theres a sniper on top of Grandmas house.. I get that information very clear and very correct.

I also love the fact I now hear bullets whizzing by head. I cant tell you guys how many times I used to die.. because I simply never knew I was getting shot at. I've seen it a million times in the KILLCAM where the dude is unloading a whole clip at me.. and Im just freaking standing there. Not anymore bytches.. you fire a shot at me. Imma duck and fire 3 back at your azz. You just better hope you hit me first!!

I'd rate them a 9 outta 10.. If they would have gotten my order right the first time around.. Id say 10 outta 10!!! Very happy customer!!
