What gaming headphones to buy? - Page 209

How was she dealing with this before the new monitor? What did she plug her headphones into before? Or has this problem been around for a while and she was always just using your mixamp before?

The audio RCA output from your game systems into your headphones would be your simplest and cheapest solution. Actually it would probably be best to run the RCAs into your fiio and then out to headphones, that way you have enough volume and it's controllable.

The way I think a lot of us would achieve what you're doing is with our home theater AVRs... they accept all of the inputs but also have a headphone out. Do you have anything like that you're currently using?

I got rid of my audio receiver (planning on getting a soundbar later, as I was tired of the wire management of the 5.1 system). It'd make no sense hooking up anything on the other side of the room to one.

The 23" HDTV the monitor replaced DID have a headphone out. That's how she was able to use her headphones before. >__<

Ahh. Why did the monitor replace the TV? Is the picture that much better?

Do you still have the receiver.. can you use that in the mean time? Maybe you should look on craigslist for a super cheapo receiver to use just for the headphone out? Maybe even take a broken one that the speaker outputs don't work or something so you can get it for peanuts.

Honestly though, I'd just use the RCA outs to mini into your fiio and out to headphones. That's your cheapest, easiest, and fastest solution. Heck buy another fiio for $20 and use it as a dedicated headphone out for your game systems.

I replaced the TV with the monitor for a variety of reasons. One being I wanted the 1080p res over the old 1366x768. That and it was matte, heavy (I sometimes take the TV to work on the weekends). The monitor is a huge upgrade pq-wise besides having a lack of inputs (Tv vs monitor, lol), crappy speakes, and no headphone jack.

Ave,

I'm trying to decide between the Sony MDR-DS6000 & the Turtle Beach Ear Force X41.

Both are pretty much the same cost; 2.4GHz RF Wireless; have Optical inputs; and pretty much feature most of everything I'm looking for. My main usage is going to be XBOX 360 gaming, Blu-ray movies & DVD's. I will not be using the Microphone (X41) cause I have no intention of gaming chat.

While the X41 is 7.1, seems to look more comfortable around the ear, and has exception reviews anywhere I look .... The one major thing going for the Sony MDR-DS6000 is that it has DTS Decoding. DTS is not supported by the X41's at all!! From what I understand, not even Core DTS (Correct me if I'm wrong). That's a big handicap as a lot of Blu-ray & even DVD movies I have feature DTS or DTS-HD (Core DTS Passthrough).

I'm not sure if one is better then the other sound-wise. So looking for some input.

Thanks!!

Honestly if I were you, I would skip wireless headphones/sets entirely. They are overpriced, and the sound quality just can't compare to wired cans.

God, I should've skipped all this time hunting for the ultimate in headphone comfort.

The Bose Quietcomfort 15 feels like heaven on the ears, an they clamp down JUST enough to make the headphones stay in place without moving a hair. This is all I could ever ask for in headphones. They also sounded pretty damn good as well.

But why oh why did they have to be $300? WHHYYYYYYY? If they were $200, I would immediately return the Sony XB700 and buy them Bose ones, and be done with buying headphones until either the AD700s or the Bose broke. The AD700s (rubberband or not), just aren't comfortable enough for me. In fact, I found that practically all headphones I have tried on start bothering either my neck or ears within the hour, with the exception being the Bose QC 15.

edit: Wait...they need AAA batteries? Ugh....no.

Here's hoping the Sony XB700 can at least stay in place as well as the Bose. I doubt it, but I know they are at least very comfortable on the ears.

BTW, I fixed my situation from earlier...

I went to Radioshack and bought a stupid RCA female to 2.5mm cable AND a 2.5mm to 3.5mm adapter. Cost me $12. I could've bought the RCA female to 3.5mm online and skipped the adapter, but I didn't wanna wait.

Surprisingly, I hooked it up to the Fiio E5, and it sounded GREAT. No DH processing, but I'm sure she's more than happy with the sound quality.

How much you want for the AD700s?
No way! I absolutely love my AD700s for gaming. It's just that they aren't comfortable enough for me. I'm willing to sacrifice the comfort for their sound, but it's the ONLY headphones that I'll do that for. Any other headphones I have NEED to be comfortable. This alone pretty much made me decide not to get the HPX. I know they're probably comfortable enough for everyone (after loosening up the clamping force), but I'm done with getting less than perfection in comfort.

I'll see how the Sony XB700 is. If they start feeling uncomfortable, I'm gonna return them for the Bose Around The Ear (aka Tri-port redux). I tried it again, and after adjust it a little on my ears, they don't pinch my ears. They seem to be just what I need. They also don't move whatsoever, nor do they need a battery. They are big enough to cover my ears, and deep enough to where my ears don't get squeezed in.

WTC, you so crazy!

I'm truly spoiled by the crazy sound the AD700s give out. That soundstage is just too good to give up.

FINE! I'll keep an eye out for another pair of used AD700s then...

Fine, I'll trade you for the HPX, and I'll buy me another pair of purple grilled wonders.

No Way! I love the HPX I was going to get some AD700s to do a knock-out conversion Mod... then sell them to someone here... Gonna pull them completely apart, full paint, full re-wire (and convert to Mini-XLR for easy cable replacement).

You really love modding headphones, eh?

If you get the AD700s, you may not wanna give them up.

edit: Mod some of the XB700's pads onto the AD700!

I have a extra pair of AD700s....

We can work something out with the K702 cable!

DT880s are the most comfortable headphones you'll ever wear. Just sayin...

Third time's a charm?

So, where else can I buy cables since monoprice seems to be down with the hack?

I was actually gonna order some XB700s ear cushions to go on my ClodBuster so I can run it in the house...

If you're adding a mic as part of your conversion mod, then I might be a willing buyer!
ok, so who other than shincz thinks the AD700's arent comfortable?

i mean i could agree that they're probably not the most comfortable headphones made (though from what i've tried, they're close ) but i dont see anyone can say they're uncomfortable... i mean even on long saturdays where i get to get my game on uninterrupted, after 10 hours i still dont even know i'm wearing them... that says a lot.... i dont know if they changed the design, if shin has a wierd head or big ears that stick out or what, but they really do float on my head and feel near weightless with no uncomfortable pinching or squeezing...

I wouldn't show it to this 'crazy' group unless it had one... hehe...
hmmm, i hadn't thought of that before.... adding the mini-xlr would keep me from installing a second jack, since i could just shrink wrap the mic connector to the xlr connector.... hmmmm, i wish i knew more about wiring and soldering and crap.

Well, don't forget... since you're enlarging the hole, the female Mini-XLR won't fully seat, so you'll be molding and adding onto the outside of the Headphone with Epoxy Putty.

Agreed, they stay on my head fine and I generally forget that I'm wearing them.
damn, now that i think about it, it would be really nice to share cables between the ad700's and the k702's.

i guess if you want the perfect look you could do that, and then you'd have to paint them... i think it would be fine with just the mini xlr though... i guess i'd have to see the connector size in person to be sure.

Cool, looking forward to seeing the latest version!

5 or 6ft, I'll double check tonight.... I kinda feel like 5ft is enough but we'll see. Can we do it with nylon or cloth sleeving?
'nerd, I'm a rare case. I find most headphones uncomfortable. My neck is constantly hurting with pretty much all headphones I wear. I blame the fact that I tend to keep my neck straight so the headphones won't slide off. The Bose just felt right because they don't budge unless I REALLY try hard to shake them off. So that means I can move my neck naturally, relieving neck strain. That and my ears have space to breathe. I shoud've bought these a long time ago.

Cloth sleeving will be here in another day or so... so, yes... not a problem.

My problem with the AD700s without the rubber band isn't a problem with "comfort" as traditionally thought of. That is, they don't hurt my ears or head with clamping force or small cans or anything like that. They just will not stay on my head nearly as well as other headphones. If I look up or down, they slide out of position. If I turn left or right too fast, they slide out of position. This is VERY annoying. I group this in the "comfort" box because I don't know where else to put it.

I think of it like this: is balancing a paper cup on your head uncomfortable? Not really.. but it's not really fun either. I prefer to have more freedom when I'm using headphones, not to be restricted to perfect posture in order for the headphones to stay on. When compared to something like the DT880, or even the A40, the AD700s overall comfort sucks, IMHO. I've worn the A40s for 10 hours plus with no problems, but I couldn't stand to balance the AD700s on my head without the rubber band mod for more than an hour.

Now with the rubber band mod, there is a big difference, and they start to feel like real headphons and allow me some more freedom for normal and natural movement.

I have a normal sized head. Maybe if you have an unusually big or small head they stay put a little more easily? Maybe there is just some variance between difference sets in how much clamping force the "wings" have? I guess if they were the only headphone I ever tried I wouldn't complain as much, but I've tried many more comfotable (overall) headphones.

I guess it's all personal preference anyway.

this has to be the case, i mean at 7 3/8 i'd say my head is fairly average (though i dont really know.)

its funny, if the headphones arent seated right i can hear a difference in sound, and i shake my head left and right real quick (like a dog drying off) and the headphones seat perfectly on my ears.... from the sound of it, all of you would have them fall off while doing this.
