Which do you prefer, FPS or TPS

Thread Starter
I personally prefer Third person shooting games, because you can actually see your character's movements. like Gears of war, army of two, DMC4 or MGS4. first person shooting make my eyes tired sometimes because of the non-stop changing on the screen, since when you looking at different direction, your whole screen has to change and move. plus you don't get to do all the hiding that well. I guess if I could game with mouse and keyboard on PS3, FPS will be fine for me, but with the controller, it is just so hard to aim! what do you guys think? which do you prefer?

They're both fun in their own way.

i prefer first person shooters to be simpler gameplay and the other more complicated - you get to see more of the action. both are equally as fun.

Your poll does not specify the platform. I prefer FPS games on my PC (with mouse/keyboard) and TPS games on consoles. But I had to vote for FPS. I've been a FPS fan since Wolf 3D in the early 90's, and the mouse/keyboard precision just can't be matched with any other type of controller (that I've seen). I still keep my PC fairly up-to-date just for FPS games.

I too wish I could plug a mouse into my Xbox360 or PS3. The Wii's controller is fairly nice for FPS controls, but the system isn't powerful enough to run anything like Gears of War, etc, so we're lacking on quality FPS games on that platform. Oh well. Maybe someday I can retire my PC from gaming if they'll ever release a console with the right controls for FPS games.

I like both, really depends on the game. GRAW2 rocks, Resistance rocks, etc etc.

Regardles of platform, type of control, time of day, mood of girlfriend, and other detailed and un-needed things for a poll I prefer FP- it's more involving than watching yourself in a separated view. Easier to connect to the action until some silly cutscene.

personally, I feel that TPS feels somewhat disjointed. Gears did a good job of simulating 1st person, while remaining a 3rd person.

Totally depends on the title.

It depends on the game. I could never envision playing a Tomb Raider game in FPS or Doom in TPS. In fact, that could be a good way of looking at it: if the character you control is a faceless, nameless person (ala Doom or Quake) then the FPS format allows you to better immerse yourself in the game since YOU are the main character. If on the other hand you're controlling an actual character (Lara Croft, Marcus Fenix, etc.) then the TPS style is probably more logical since they'll have their own distinct personalities and mannerisms that you'll want to see on screen.

I wouldnt call tomb raider a shooter. But sticking with shooters I prefer FPS. Theres just something about being able to take cover with my back to a wall going into a room, but still being able to see in the room that bothers me. Its almost like cheating.

Dont hate but when I first saw gears at a friends house, for the first 2 minutes or so of a multiplayer match I was telling my friend to tell that guy infront of him to move. After yelling across the room to hopefully get thru the mic I realized that the guy infront of us was....us. It pretty much killed it for me.

I prefer TPS, because the lack of depth perception turns FPS games into a mad symphony of face slams into pixellated walls and missed attempts to jump onto things. At least you get a frame of reference with a third-person perspective.

Basically the same, I voted for third person, but on PC I prefer first person.

Consoles are perfect for third person imho.

Yep -- no one has any depth perception playing an FPS unless they use stereo goggles and stereo rendering. You're just guessing at distances based on an assumption about how big your character is compared to the view.

That's why I prefer TPS, because you can directly see how big you are compared to the environment, so you can interact more naturally with your surroundings instead of having to guess whether your invisible cylinder is exposed from cover, or whether your nonexistent feet are able to make the leap to that platform that's some undetermined distance in front of you.

TPS is nice because it offsets the field-of-view limitation and inability to "be aware of your surroundings" that make FPS a bit annoying, even more so with the slow view rotation of non-mouse games. But neither fix the lack of accurate "down the barrel" view. It drives me nuts when I've got the crosshairs on a spot far away and throw a grenade to have it bounce off the wall just to the side. All in all, for games that offer it both ways, like GRAW360, I've found I prefer the more "through my eyes" view of FPS.

For a while, (probably still) you could buy these cool glasses that had 2 lcd screens in them that gave the impression you were looking at a 120 inch screen. I think they were trying some virtual reality stuff with games for a while, though I haven't heard of anything lately. Now THAT would be next-gen (Nintendo's old glasses don't count). Of course, you'd need one hell of a screen that would completely cover you field of vision and allow for head movement sensing. Then we could have some depth perception in FPS.

PC FPS
PS3 TPS (strangle FTW)
I have to say both: even though I really enjoy FPS I can't Imagine Gears of war in FP or resistance in TP.

One of the Unreal games for Xbox was a perfect mix of 3rd and 1st. Instant switch with a button. Star Wars battlefront gave that option, which was great, though you had to do it through the menu - which sucked. So how about it? HYBRID.

That's what I've always liked about the SOCOM series - you can toggle 1st and 3rd, in-game.
