Question about HD-A2 vs. HD-XA2

I just wanna double-check on this before pulling any triggers:

* My Sony KDF-60XBR950 TV has 1080i (not 1080p), one DVI input (not HDMI) and resolution of 1386x788 (not 1920x1080).

* My Pioneer Elite VSX-84TXSi receiver has 1.2 HDMI inputs (not 1.3).

Question: would it make any sense for me to buy an HD-XA2 -- and if so, why? Or will I be just as well off with an HD-A2?

Thanks!

Hmm, if it were my money, I'd get the A2. Your receiver has HDMI, so you can take advantage of TrueHD. The A2 upscales very well (though not as good as the XA2), so unless you reallllllyyy plan on watching lots of DVD in the future, the A2 is more than adequate. And when you finally get a 1080p set, it will deinterlace the 1080i signal back into 1080p.

Oh, one more question. Keeping in mind my system (above)...

What would do a better job of upconverting regular SD DVDs -- the A2 or an Oppo player?

I'm wondering if maybe an Oppo would suffice until a less expensive combo-unit is released.

Well, being an A2 owner Im gonna say the A2 is just as good as any Oppo if not better, but I guess Im biased. Funny thing is that when I nneded a new DVD player about 4 months ago I seriously considered an Oppo or a Denon upconveting player....but then....the A2 was sitting right there and I figured:

1) For under $300 bucks I have a solid upconverting player
2) I get to watch HD DVD movies on it
3) 5 free movies with purchase which even if you dont like them you can get a decent chunk of cfash for them on e-bay or whatever.

I bought the A2 and it was a GREAT decision.....
