Need a receiver for my ps3...

Thread Starter
I'm in the market for a receiver for hooking up my PS3(HDMI) and 360 Premium(Component) to 5.1 or 7.1 surround sound. I have the HD-DVD addon for my 360, and will eventually upgrade to an elite.

I really don't care about it being future proof. I'm just looking for an inexpensive receiver that I can use to play games and movies at a reasonable volume.

I am having the hardest time trying to figure out what I need for all the audio codecs. I would like to spend less than $350 street, so I'm not too keen on getting DD+, TrueHD, and HD Master Audio.

Any help is appreciated.

I believe pretty much HDMI entry receiver's are at least $300. And not all those will pass audio, just video.

Onkyo 605 is a 7.1 receiver, does video and audio, has 2 HDMI inputs and supports the new codecs. I've seen it online for as low as $325 + shipping some places. You may want to start with that unless someone here can give you another suggestion.

I have searched, and I have read the things here. It's just hovering somewhere above my comprehension right now. I had given up, and was just looking for simple recommendations.

I'd recommend the Onkyo 605 as Evoex said above. I own the step up (805), but the people who have the 605 (a very healthy thread here on AVS) seem to love the 650 so far.

No you didn't. I did one simple search with keywords "PS3 and Receiver". There are plently of "simple recommendations" in these threads/topics. Look what came up;

I would recommend the sony str-dg910. It handles 1080p and 7.1 lpcm. Paying for DTrueHD and DTS-HD-MA decoding is a complete and total waste of money.

You gan get it for $330 at JR.com

Also from what I understand the 605 has many issues:
1) can only tanscode upto 720p from component to HDMI (the 910 can do upto 1080i)
2) Speaker popping with HDMI
3) forced upconversion of all sources below 720p to 720p (this is very bad if you have a 1080p tv)

Also the 910 has 3 hdmi inputs, compared to 2 on the 605. So you can hook up your PS3, and an elite, and still have an input left for HD cable.

He's not being an ass. He even provided the search links. How much can you continually spoon feed people?

I got the 910 and I love it.

. Comcast DVR (hdmi) no handshake issues - confirmed
. PS3 (hdmi) lossless pcm - confirmed
. Elite (hdmi) 1080p works - confirmed

>>Does the 910 pass audio via hdmi?

Do you mean to the tv? I don't know I always use the receiver for sound.

The guys has what 4 posts? He claimed he searched, read threads and basically couldn't find what he was looking for. I wasn't being an ass. I was stating the obvious. It looks like he made a an account solely to post this question rather then to a search which probably would have saved him time. I did a simple search and all those threads came up. I would understand if it were difficult going to the receiver section reading all those threads/posts and then just picking one. However this topic has been discussed to death. If he would have stated in his first post he searched came up so and so threads and still isn't sure and requested other people opinions on receiver they spent in the $300-400 dollar range we wouldn't be having this issue. I was nice enough to provide him links to threads on this same topic if searching the forum was being difficult for him. I did more help for him then you have. It may have not been the most polite way in your opinion but claiming he did something when it is flat out obvious he didn't is ridiculous. I am not singling you out jchill2 it's just this happens way to offen also on a lot of forums not just this one.

sorry apparently it does, it was a different receiver i was thinking of, it passed video from the ps3 via hdmi but no audio, for audio you needed an optical cable

Where did you see that deal?
605 sounds much better then the 910. I tried both.
Heh, I did a quick google search on the 605. Apparently somebody has named it receiver of the year

wow, I can't believe no one has posted it yet, Yamaha RX-V661.

http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=822161

Has Pre-outs as well as level 6 future-proofing at potentially less than $400. Sounds great and doesn't have the potential for popping that seems to be somewhat common with the Onkyo's. The only thing it doesn't have is HDMI 1.3, but there is a whole thread on why that isn't a big deal as well.

Question:

Will the HDMI pass the audio through to the TV whether I'm using the receiver or not? 90% of my use will be through the TV speakers.
Yes they can pass sound through to the TV (the receiver has to be on), but I have to ask.

Why would you buy a receiver if you don't plan on getting speakers?
I do have speakers, its just for certain applications I don't want them used. For example when my son is watching Nickelodeon, I just want the sound through the TV speakers and the receiver off. When I'm streaming music through the PS3, I'd like the receiver to be on and playing through the speakers. When I'm by myself playing Motorstorm I'd like to have it through the speakers as well. I'm trying to figure out the best way of accomplishing this.

I'd also like this to be seamless with regards to Wife/Kid operation in conjunction with my Harmony remote.

Going to need an IR adapter for the PS3 then, Harmony won't work with Bluetooth.

Awesome! It is unfortunate people create accounts to ask the same question over and over again. Why are people to lazy search? Everyone wants to be spoon-fed.

Despite what you want to believe, yes, you were being an ass by posting that reply.

Some people are so damned Search-obsessed, did it ever occur to you that some people don't want to use the Search function? Is it against the law to ask your own question and hope for a helpful reply?

Guess what, if you don't like his question, no one forces you to enter his thread.

If you aren't going to answer his question, then GTFO.

No it was a simple suggestion, that was it. Which ever way you chose to interpret it is not my fault. He said he searched the forum and it was obvious he didn't, plain and simple. Some people are sick and tired of the same damn threads/topics, posted over and over again. No it isn't against the law I never said that. I was "helpful" in everyway more so then you are to this thread. I even went so far as to supply him with with the search result link and a few of already posted threads/topics on this. "Guess what" if you don't like my suggestions and helpful information then you can simply ignore me. Didn't think of that did you? I didn't answer his question parse however I did supply helpful links. It is a lot more helpful then your immaturity and immature nick/handle, with your acronyms such as 'GTFO' that and acting like a Wanna-Be-MOD Nazi. Save us your future of wasted AVS space & bandwidth and go away.
