What Happens if you lay a Plsama Down ?

Thread Starter
I am planning on picking up a Panny Plasma from the store and don't have a pick up truck.

I DO have room in my Vehilce to transport it if I lay the box down flat.

I seem to remember reading something about NOT laying a Plasma TV down for some reason.

Or is that only don't lay it on it's FACE ? Would it's back be OK ?

Why not? What would happen? It would be laying down for about 30 minutes.

Would I be safe in doing this for this short period of time?

Thanks, Tim.

Previous threads on the same subject indicate that you should never do so, because the glass is very fragile, and is very easy to break when lying flat. If you hit a pothole or have to make a sudden stop, the glass may very well shatter.

You would have to be insane to transport a plasma horizontally by car/SUV. It may likely void your warranty as well if damaged during transit.

If you notice that all glass moving trucks, such as for windows, car windows, doors, etc line up all the glass standing up. The reason is up and down vibrations from driving distributed across horizontal class will cause damage much easier because of the greater surface area.

It's okay to lay it down if you aren't transporting it, but I would recommend against it if you plan to drive it around.

Everything I have read says shipping large sheets of glass laying flat = BAD.

However, how does everyone attach their wall mounts? Do you have someone hold the set up or do you go ahead and lay it flat?

You can lay a pdp flat. Pioneer 5080HD says to lay their plasma flat to remove speaker.

It's just that you can't transport a plasma flat! See russwong's comments above for reasoning. If you hit a bump, pothole, or slam on your brakes... then you are stressing the glass of a horizontal plasma in a highly risky way!

OK, from the manual:

Quote:

Warning
...Two or more people should carry the TV. Never lay the TV on the floor because of possible damage to the screen. Always store the TV upright.

It can be laid flat other than transport, but it is a handle w/ care using (2) people scenario.

Couple of excerpts from Pioneer Pro1150HD/ 950 HD manual:

When using the hang on wall unit, first lay the plasma
display on top of a soft sheet, etc., remove the stand, then
attach the speaker.

Detaching the stand
1 With the plasma display lying flat, loosen and remove
the two installation bolts (1) and (2) using a
screwdriver.

As far as I know neither Best Buy or Circuit City will allow you to pick up a plasma tv unless it can be transported upright.
While waiting to pick up my daughter and son-in-law's 42" plasma at Circuit City I watched a very excited woman waiting to pick up her new 50" Panny plasma. You can imagine the look of disappointment on her face when they were unable to load it in her Tahoe because it wouldn't go in standing up.

Yeah, the Sammy manual stating not to lay it flat could be a case of covering their fanny's. Like the plastic bags that warn you not insert your head because of suffocation.

Funny. It's truly hard to make things idiot-proof.

Just rent a Uhaul van. I don't know how far you are from the store, but was about 10 miles. I think it ended up costing me like 35 bucks for the van. A small price to pay to get my 2-3k plasma home safe.

The manuals say to lay it flat to remove the speaker because you're not knocking it around. You're spending big bucks on a TV, don't skimp on getting it home.

If it is a new purchase at a local store, how much could a home delivery actually cost. Why be penny wise and pound foolish.

Old Henny Youngman joke:

A man goes to the Doctor. The Doctor asked the man what is the matter with him. The man lifted his arm behind his neck, twisted his wrist around, and said: Doctor, it hurts when I do this.
Doctor: Don't do that!.

The last time I laid my plasma down on the floor of my living room, I had to bolt my Lazy-Boy recliner to the ceiling just to watch it! Oh and by all means do not forget to add a seat belt to the recliner for your safety. I do think the picture looked sharper and more brilliant but that could have just been the blood rushing to my head. Your viewing pleasure and mileage may vary. Pleasant watching!!!!

Maybe it took that long for someone to realize he was still strapped to the recliner on the ceiling...
