I love my HD DVD player but am jealous with certain titles like Reservoir Dogs, Usual Suspects and Into of the Blue with Jessica Alba to name a few titles. Want to see her swimming in Hi Def.

If you want to convert HD-DVDs to Bluray, you can use tsremux to open the .EVO file and convert it to a Bluray, but you will lose menus, etc. This utility comes in handy for watching HD-DVDs on a PS3

Usual Suspects would be worth doing - however Into the Blue is encoded at 14mbps MPEG-2 LOL - and looks grainy-as!

Well, if anyone could actually buy a flippin' HD DVD burner, it would be fairly easy to do. Rip one format and burn back to the other. But the costs associated with buying an HD DVD Burner and Blu-Ray burner would be astronomical and it would also be illegal.

The easiest solution is to build an HTPC and rip those BD discs to hard disc. It's gonna be even more fun to do once BD+ gets cracked.

That's assuming BD+ makes it into shops before the war ends ;-)

I'm surprised this thread isn't closed yet. Piracy discussions are are not tolerated.

Format-shifting is illegal for personal use? Since when?

You have to break the copy protection to do it. That's illegal. Like it or not, legally, it's a black and white issue. Circumvent copy protection and you break the law.

Its a gray issue since both camps support Managed Copy.

I know that Piracy is illegal. I just simply was jealous over some titles of BLURAY. I am a HD DVD addict who needs great titles. Just did a little brainstorming and asked the question. Sorry to offend some people.

It can be done, but there's no one stop software solution. The good news is you can buurn HDDVDs to DVD9 so no need to buy an expensive HDDVD writer.

Required hardware:
PC
DVD writer
BD rom drive

Required software:
Ripping
Demuxing
Encoding
Authoring

Now considering you need a BD Rom drive to red the disc in the first place it's probablyh a better idea to simply build a HTPC instead of going to the effort of ripping/re-encoding.

This is an interesting idea but wouldn't it be easier and perhaps less expensive to just buy a Blu-ray player? There's some nice prices on ebay.

If it is illegal, how come I can break copy protection to back up my DVD's and I am legally allowed do this?

It's called fair use:

Just where the hell are the HD-DVD R or RW internal pc drives?

I've seen announcements they exist, you can buy the blank media, A big selling point of hd-dvd is how similiar the technology is to dvd, so how come I can get a dvd burner for $50 and I can't buy an HD-DVD burner to save my soul? Easy enough to find a BD burner. What gives?

One must ask, if he has the capability to "rip [a] BD disc to hard disc" why does he need to convert it to an HD DVD? He obviously already has a way to play it in its native format?

Blu-ray had extensive development as a writable format, and launched as one prior to being used for packaged media.

HD DVD did not, and for whatever reason it seems that the appropriate hardware and media are taking longer to get to market, but they are coming.
