I just tried it and, no, it can't be done. I use Windows Home Server as a server and I set up a "Firmware" shared folder to hold the firmware. I copied the firmware from the SD Card to the share. After double-checking everything, I tried to upgrade using the LAN option to no avail. I get the same "Upgrade file not found" message that I get when trying to upgrade from the Internet.
I have no problem accessing the shares holding music, and photos, so I believe my share settings are correct. The TV sees the "Firmware" folder but somehow the upgrade app does not see the files therein.
I guess you'll have to (or did already) upgrade by using an SD Card.
