See, comments like the above make me really unsure about what to tell people here. It all depends on your frame of reference and what you're expecting.
Have you watched further than the beginning of GitS yet PDB? That really looked exceedingly soft and flat, but it clears up nicely afterwards. It's always been this way on every DVD I've seen too. I watched the entire thing just now and if we're comparing to DVD the level of detail is way beyond anything on there in many shots. Not trying to be apologetic in the least, none of these have the King Kong effect and Anime in HD has a harder time conveying the 'HD experience' outside of panorama shots anyway. Just calling it as I see it here, GitS isn't generally impressive HD, but it's well beyond DVD with the exception of the shots that have always been strangely soft and flat (and those really look barely better than DVD; for easy reference check detail in the shots of buildings surrounding the market chase or the montage with Kusanagi on the boat). GitS is like WoH in the first batch, less impressive than P2, inconsistent and sometimes plain soft for a 1080p picture. Then there's images of surprising clarity that are so busy with detail you find yourself wondering why it couldn't look like that in every shot. It also struggles with varying levels of crawling noise in solid patches of color. I'm left with the same open question as last time: is this source related? Could it have been better? I really don't know and until I do I'm satisfied with the upgrade but can only recommend this with reservations to the crowd here. Tech specs are excellent, the AVC bitrate is upper 20's to mostly mid 30's and the audio clearer than I've ever heard it. If you were hoping this would look like Brave Story or Innocence...it doesn't. And if the first batch didn't do it for you, this won't either. Oh, it's framed at 185 and slightly windowboxed like WoH. PCM 2.0 Japanese, DD 2.0 for the dub.
P2 I've only looked as quickly, but it's better than GitS just like P1 was sharper and clearer than WoH. Copy and paste those observations from what I've seen. Much better than previous DVDs, redone contrast/color timing etc.. Detail beyond DVD was more readily apparent here right from the start, less of a mixed bag. Put in the DVD and had a good laugh, quite the difference in many ways. Either the sources for these are just better or they got the special treatment. P2 is not windowboxed and framed at 185. TrueHD for the renewal track, PCM for the original theatrical track and vanilla DD for the dub.
Didn't get Steamboy as I didn't enjoy that enough to dump this sort of cash on it. If issues with these releases are indeed only source related it should look stunning seeing how recent it is. If you're trying to gauge your own interest in these titles look at the comparisons in the Impress links. Those should give you an idea how much or little of an upgrade these discs are over DVD. I'm loving it and looking forward to the rest of them.
