Middle Atlantic RSH shelves

I notice they sell the Middle Atlantic RSH faceplate separately from the shelves (the A-FACE part vs. the RSH4A part). Does anyone know if there's anything custom about the shelf or could I simply attach the custom cut faceplate to a standard 2U-5U vented MA shelf?

My reasoning is that I could buy the shelves initially and then add the faceplates slowly over time.

Also (I hope this isn't breaking forum rules but I've been digging around with only a few hits)....Can anyone recommend a good place online to buy the RSH shelves? I've found a few but I'd prefer somewhere recommended by a happy customer.

Aaron,

I do not believe you can separatelly buy the faceplace. You will pay the same price even if you could...

Thanks Roman.

I ended up talking to someone at MA and they explained why the faceplate is available separately. The RSH shelves are specific to the faceplates, but not really custom for each component (i.e. only the faceplate is cut to spec). So, if you have an RSH shelf and you replace a piece of equipment, you can just buy the A/B/C-FACE part number and save 30 or 40 bucks on buying the face and the shelf together.

I also found what appears to be a reputable dealer with a knowledgeable sales guy to help me out.

Aaron,

That is correct, and I am glad you found someone who can order just a faceplate for you. My distributor told me that you have to pay for the whole shelf even if you only need a faceplate...

Aaron,

One more thing - even if you CAN buy a separate faceplate, it may not be sufficient. If the new equipment you are retying to place in the rack takes the same number of spaces, than you are OK. If not, you need different sides of the shelf as well. The only piece which probably may be reused is the bottom of the shelf, and again depending on the new equipment you are trying to put in there it may not work also...

I swap out equipment in my rack often, so over the years I've accumulated a bunch of RSH shelves of various rack spaces and depths. So now, I just order the face plates separately, and found a place online that sells them for about $60 a piece. Much cheaper than buying the full shelf.

I learned this just last week when I ordered all my face plates, slim 5 and the lot. In the future it will be nice to only buy face plates as long as I have the proper shelf. www.buyrackgear.com has been very helpful just as for Chris EXT 118.

Yep, that's the guy I've been talking to. I think going to www.stayonline.com will take you to the same place. They even have a nice online tool for picking the make and model of your equipment when ordering.

So just to clarify, you can in fact add just the face plate to regular shelves correct?

I too would like to just do regular shelves for now and add face plates later. thanks in advance!

The shelves aren't all the same length. This is specific to the component although I think there probably only a few choices. The number of rack spaces and how high, the size and shape of the face plate opening is specific. Bottom line is yes ,if the shelf is a two space then a two space face plate will fit any.

I second Chris a buyrackgear.com.

Hey Don and Art, Thanks for the plug! I'm not at buy rack gear/stay online anymore. I started my own company where we specialize in Middle Atlantic custom A/V racks. We live, breath and sleep Middle Atlantic racks. Our website is www.customavrack.com

Stay Online/BRG sells the shelves for $98 plus a minimum shipping charge of $10. We sell them for $97 w/ standard shipping rates. I'll also take care of you as a customer, not just forward your call to Middle Atlantic.

To the original poster, you can buy just the RSH custom faceplate if you already have a shelf. Go here: Order just the Middle Atlantic custom faceplate

There you can just add the faceplate, not just the whole shelf.

If you have any questions, let me know. Plus, check out my blog, The Brass Tacks of Middle Atlantic Racks if you need advice or technical info on your rack system

I found out that you were gone after you helped me out last fall and I needed some follow up assistance - that was almost non-existant.

I am glad you're back! I've got a couple of items I need to look into so I'll be in touch!

I was wondering where you went! Your name is how I ended up on StayOnline's site...

I'll have to check your site out! Wish I would have found it a few weeks ago when I ordered 4 custom faceplates/shelves (from Stay Online).
