hallo great forum

it's been quite a time i'm reading here.

i'm from Switzerland.

please help coosing

when i order the oppo 981, i will have to pay shipping + custom + custom handling = about 380$

when i order the denon 1940 it will cost also 380$ (plus code free arround 15$) inkl all cost.

so for my case both cost the same.

what would you buy?

and as a note, i'm planing to get a 40xbr4 sony with hdmi 1.3

any thought for this.

btw.
we will have only sd-dvd's to see, since all our rentals don't have any BR or HDDVD

What HDMI 1.3 features do you want? They are not used by SD-DVD.

As wmcclain points out, HDMI v1.3 isn't going to be particularly useful on a SD-DVD player. The only portion of the HDMI v1.3 spec that any standard DVD players would ever be able to make use of is the automatic AV sync adjustment (which, as I understand it, requires the entire signal path - player, receiver, and display - to be HDMI v1.3 and to support the automatic sync adjustment). The other things that v1.3 adds on top of v1.2 are not applicable to the DVD format. For that matter, all that v1.2 really adds on top of v1.1 is support for a DSD bitstream. There's no point in waiting on v1.3 when shopping for a DVD player.

ok, understand.

but now, the question was:

if for me both player has the same price, witch would you get, and please why .

If you are in Switzerland, check opposhop.com. They are based in Sweden and should cost less to ship the player to you than if you order from US. I have no experience with Denon 1940 so cannot help there.

i know

but that is even higher (or at least same) in costs

why?

- because the price is in uro
- because switzerland is not in the EU
- because the custom has charges for the administration
- because the vat. has still has to be paid.

any one here who has an oppinion

DENON or OPPO and WHY

hello.
consider that 1940 is on Denon's very bottom line-up, where as Oppo 981 is still considered the top of their lines, I'd go with the 981 IF and ONLY IF you believe the importing / handling is reliable enough (i.e. no excessive delay, possible damage etc).

on the other hand, would the new oppo 980's superior audio and chassis design be an option?

Get the Oppo 980H which is less money, and you only would notice any deinterlacing difference on some test discs. It also reportedly has superb PAL conversion, though I'm not sure if you guys in the C.H. use PAL.

yes we do have PAL

has the 970 a better PAL conv. than the 981?

has any one seen a test or review of the denon 1940?

PAL on the 970 is poor compared to the 981, which is very good. The 980 is somewhere between.
