Panasonic Plasma Settings

I have been looking around for a while but i cant seem to find any settings for the 360 hooked up via component to my 50" Panasonic 77u plasma. Do you game on 'vivid' mode? Any good recommendations? Thanks!

*shudders* heck no! Don't do anything on vivid mode... especially if your TV is new! The settings on vivid are way jacked just to make an impression in a store. You should use a disc to calibrate the set or at least turn the brightness/contrast way down. Since games have a lot of static images, in addition to actually looking better in a normal amount of ambient light, it will help to prevent burn-in.

lol Yes the deadly vivid mode.. I understand what u mean. I watch tv on Custom Mode only and have it looking amazing. I just would like more pop and detail during games.. I have had the tv over a month now and have had no IR after games that lasted longer than 2 minutes of tuning to Discovery HD.. Just would like to get some ideas what people are using to get the best results. Thanks for responding.

That's great , Discovery HD is what I use to rid temporary IR as well.

I'd get it professional ISF calibrated. Best money I ever spent on my 700u.

vivid mode = death to plasma. Just kidding, actually I don't use it at all since it looks horrible.

I watch normal tv in cinema mode, and game in standard. I think my standard settings are like +6 for Picture, -10 for Brightness and +16 for sharpness, the rest are pretty much on zero. Looks fantastic, and blows my LCD away for color.

I’ve had a Panasonic plasma in my bedroom for about a year (approximately 1500 hours on it)(standard mode, picture +14, brightness +8). I play Halo on line a few times per week (1-2 hour sessions). From the beginning I could see some IR of the “Health meter”, which would disappear after a few hours of normal TV viewing. A few days ago I noticed the “Health meter” on a blank (dark) screen. The IR is still there after 12+ hours of normal TV viewing. It’s not bad enough to see in normal viewing but enough to give me concern.
The TV is great for gaming. I also have a DLP and a CRT rear projection that don’t compare. I can see detail much better on the Plasma but I am a little concerned about burn in.

The settings on my 37PX60U are much, much lower than most of your settings. I think my brightness and picture are only set in the +3 range, after calibrating with Avia under my usual lighting conditions.

I get some IR after 5+ hour gaming sessions, but it goes away shortly after switching to some varied content. White interfaces will obviously cause the individuals pixels to burn brighter, leading to IR that might take longer than normal to wash out, but it WILL disappear given some time.

I basically don't worry about burn-in at all. I just make sure to mix up the content I display on the TV.

So i take it that the professional calibration really made a difference. What are the noticeable changes?

I actually messed around with all the settings today. I find myself loving my custom mode settings. The one thing im trying to achieve is a little more bright detail(if u know what i mean). For example, when i put it on Vivid it almost seemed like it took the filter off of the lense. Removed the 'haze'. Picture was not as sharp before this. Although Vivid also introduced other issues such as noise. I was looking at Sunrise Earth and i paused the screen, to me i saw more detail in the stone wall on Vivid than in any other mode. The dark scenes had way too much noise though. I guess im trying to achieve more detail without the noise. Maybe its not possible. Where can i find Panny screenshots to compare what im looking at to what other people have?

Shadow detail. No black crush. No red push. White whites not blue whites. The colors all look proper with no oversaturation. etc etc

Peace of mind is another perk. You know your TV is set right and don't constantly tweek. Actually you don't tweek at all or your no longer ISF calibrated.

Thanks to everyone for all the help. I just want the best possible picture for my tv. My wife thinks im crazy and the tv looks perfect to her. I just notice if im watching Discovery HD or HDnet and then turn to HBOHD i find myself tweaking HBO. Maybe its just HBO. DiscoveryHD, HDnet, even ESPDHD looks amazing. Depending on the show sometimes ESPNHD doesnt look as good. Im on DirectvHD so it also may be the source. Last night i did the un-thinkable!!! I played Tiger Woods 08 on the 360 in 'VIVID'. Someone please tell why it looks so much better. Sharper, brighter, more vibrant colors and i could see much more detail. I tried to switch to other modes afterward and i could not achieve the same results. The thing that really shocked me was i had no IR at all afterward(i thought i would have more being on Vivid)... I played almost 2 hours. I know Vivid on tv watching has issues but for gaming it looked great. Thoughts?

Well you may want to think twice about calibration then. Don't take this the wrong way, but it sounds like you have the flair for oversaturated unatural colors of Vivid. There's a reason manufacturers put it on their TVs. It sells TVs.

ISF calibration will give you more clarity and detail along with natural colors, but that's something you need to decide if you want. People have actually been disappointed with ISF calibration because they thought oversaturated vivid was what TV was suppose to look like. Of course these people learn to live with Black Crush, Red push, blue white etc at the same time.

VIVID also has a higher gamma setting that crushes black levels and exaggerates contrast levels. It's coded in firmware and is unchangeable. Set it to CINEMA and use a calibration DVD to adjust the user settings. This will get you very close to the best picture. If you want to go the extra mile then you'll need to access the service menu or pay for ISF calibration.

Thanks again for responding. As far as my tv watching i agree with you. Its not so much the color i have a little issue with, its more the detail. Like when i watch Sunrise Earth and they show a close up of sand on the beach it seem a little too soft(smoothed over..not enough grit). Its hard to describe. I actually have been messing with my custom settings today and i have actually gotten great results. Beside showing more detail i agree that Vivid does have more negative effects. Im really nitpicking anyway. I love my tv. I work in the graphics field for a living so im really into detail. I have the TH-50PE77u from Costco. Also, i found a ISF Calibrator only 1 mile from my home.

Thanks! I will also try this.. I appreciate the help.

When i got mine calibrated. I got him to calibrate the Custom preset, it made the most sense to me. Left the built in ones alone.
