Hang proj from ceiling or on shelf on back wall?

I'm converting my game room into a dedicated media room. The room is 15'x15' and has a vaulted ceiling. The high part of the ceiling is 10' and all of the walls are 8' and they slope up to the 10'. There is a ceiling fan in the middle of the room. I'm guessing viewers will sit around 10'-12' from the screen. I have not selected a projector or screen size yet so this may influence the answer somewhat, but here is the question:

Based on the geometry of the room, would you mount the projector in the ceiling towards the rear of the room or on a shelf on the back wall?

I'm guessing that if I mount in the ceiling I would need a 2' drop pole so the projector would line up with the top of the wall where the screen will go. Or would I need to drop it even further? I think that if the projector is at 8' then the ceiling fan won't get in the way. If I mount the proj on the back wall then I would build a shelf somewhere near the top of the 8' wall. Or would it need to go a bit lower with the shelf?

I'm having electrical work done tomorrow so need to sort out where I need the power plug to be installed, either in the ceiling or along the top of the back wall. Input welcome.

Thanks
Brett

Well, it depends upon the projector and the throw that it can provide. If you can do it, I would recommend shelf mounting it. It's much easier and it's more "out of the way". My front and rear walls are exactly like yours (8' tall and then they slope to 10'). I placed the shelf about 7' high on the back wall, so that the lens was the same height as the top of the screen. I also have a ceiling fan (black) in the center of the room and it works perfectly this way.

Where in Texas?

This is on a shelf. We had used a mount first but did not like it. IF you can use one there are many advantages to a shelf.

Before you make this decision you need to select a projector.

Given your description it sounds like you need to pick one out that has the right amount of vertical lens shift.

Even with shift a lot of projectors need to be between the upper and lower edges of the screen. (100% shift)

So hanging at the top of the wall won't cut it.

Other projectors have fixed offsets and given a screen placement they can only be placed at one fixed height.

For instance the new optima HD80 needs to go at 36% of the screen height above the top of the screen.

If you get one of those you should really put up the projector and then fine tune the position of the screen to match the image. Some tilting of the projector and screen maybe required if you don't have the full 36%.

I wont have this luxury as I need to build hte room first and buy the projector later.

I'm guessin shelf mounting offers more flexibility. I'm in a 18.5 ft deep room. Is there any reason that most if not all projectors would be able to throw a 92 to 105 inch image at that distance?

What should I be thinking about?

I am thinking of placing projector on a shelf myself. When mounted onto the ceiling that tend to vibrate when people walk upstairs which reduces the lamp life and causes it to need re-adjustment. Also it does not allow you to use the len's cover which causes dust buildup on the lens.
