So I pushed the studios and our team to go and collect these discs and perform a scientific analysis a few months back. Figured it would be easy. Right? Imagine my surprise, when after posting here and other forums including asking Mr. Hunt and him positing in his blog, the number of bad combo discs we got could be counted on one hand.
Suffice it to say, my credibility and that of other folks went down you know what. Note that I am not saying there is no problem. But if the numbers are what they are, then we should have gotten decent number of discs to analyze. But we didn't even come even remotely close to that
. So unfortunately, I won't be the one pushing folks to investigate once more. A call to the studio then is the best recourse as is returing the disk to the retailer.
It seems like it was something that would be hard to get a handle on; I sent in my WE ARE MARSHALL combo disc, which froze repeatably on my HD-A1 (Firmware 2.3), and received a disc back which supposedly was tested on an HD-A1/2.3 and played fine. It froze on my machine too (but not as badly as my first disc, nor as frequently). I contacted M/S and sent that replacement back in and that was the last I heard of it (and I still don't have a working disc). Were the folks at Microsoft able to get any kind of handle on the problems with these discs, or was it entirely unrepeatable on your end? If the latter, that's truly maddening. If they did come to any conclusions, can you share them?
Unfortunately, most folks who got bad combo discs probably exchanged them for good ones immediately, so your sample size was going to be small to begin with. I still had mine only because it was sent as a review copy. I need to check my BOURNE ULTIMATUM though. Maybe you'll get another guinea pig.
