It will change. The addition of keys and harmonies supposedly require the new file format which RB2 can't handle.

Some people have claimed that there were some pre-RB3 songs with harmonies. TBRB's songs have harmonies, but they can only be played with TBRB; the Green Day songs that were in the DLC library before GDRB was released have harmonies when played in GDRB and if they have harmonies in RB3 for people who haven't installed and export GDRB, it would argue that the old file format had support for at least harmonies all along.

Reading through a discussion on the official forums, it appears as if the DLC files themselves don't actually contain any harmony data whatsoever. So that makes it appear as if the harmony track data is contained in the game code itself for those songs. This would explain why the files work in RB2, but have the harmonies in RB3/GD:RB. (Since when the files are loaded up and run in the other games, the built in code adds on the harmony tracks. This doesn't require additional audio stems or modifications to the files themselves, so hence it works).

Also, I've heard that the PSN will NOT be updating next week (which seems really stupid to not update your network the week after Christmas when a lot of people will be buying new systems/games and would like DLC), so I guess that means we're not getting any RB DLC next week either?

Correct, the PSN has never updated the week between Christmas and New Years Day. We'll get a "double update" the following week, based on years past.

so Harmonix has been sold by Viacom, likely for much less money than they had bought it for. Apparently due to the poor perfomance of RB releases since the acquisition. Interesting.

I detected a decreased interest starting with RB2 and even more so with RB3, but I really have no hard facts at hand. Just an impression from traffic on the sites a visit.

Does this mean it will be harder for them to do the music licensing without MTV?

That's my main concern in all of this. Who had more influence in acquiring the big names? Was it Viacom/MTV or was it Harmonix?

There are people on both sides of the fence on this one with some saying that Viacom was actually a hinderance, but they also played a big part in landing the Beatles. Could HMX have done that on their own? Only time will tell.

If you have a spare minute, vote in this poll on rockband.com. Thanks!

I hope not!

I normally play RB at friends, but I decided to get RB 3 for xmas to practice the keyboard....

RB3 with keyboard is really sweet !

Now my true concern for this post...

I went to pick up a RB2 guitar or a RB3 guitar so my GF could play...

NO STORES CARRY RB GEAR ANYMORE !

Maybe its because I'm looking the week after xmas... ?

2 targets, 2 best buys, 2 walmarts. Nothing. No guitars, no drums, no bundles.

I found a $99 5-key RB3 fender at a appliance store
(that store DID sell the 102-key PRO guitar but only available for Wii).

I asked Best Buy when they were going to get in the PRO 102-key mustang guitars, and they said they werent. He said it was going to be online only.

RB3 has to be the worst released video game this decade.
Seriously awesome stuff with no supply chain or ads.

If they stuck RB3 on a tv with a keyboard for people to demo, they would be buying this up... instead its on a back shelf that you have to hunt for. Or even a commecial...

Find a complete RB2 package on sale. I've seen them REALLY cheap at times, like $40 or $50 for everything. Then you get more than a guitar for your money.
good advice on the RB2 complete package. You can also look at Guitar Hero Guitars as they are compatible with RB.

I found the stock RB 2 guitar to not be very durable.... while the PS2 Guitar Hero wireless guitar I've had for 3 years now still works perfectly.... you can pick up the TAC Adapter.... It's only $13 shipped, and it allows you to use PS2 guitars with RB on PS3.... I'm surprised how much the price has dropped on these.... just a few months ago they were listed at $30 on amazon

Someone up here said they saw one of the GH:WT systems for $20 somewhere. I don't know where and I can't verify the accuracy of the comment, but it's a thought.

Of course I can track down old RB2 stuff. That's what EBay is for.

The point is that stores are no longer carrying anything RB related -- even with RB3 and a slew of new instruments less than 2 months old.

There's a bunch of RB stuff on sale at GameShark. The sale was supposed to end 28 December, but I checked some coupon codes this morning and they're still there. Flip through the list of RB3 hardware to check it out--look for red lettering.

I got all excited about the sale on the wooden Strat replica ($90, $160 off list price, the most spectacular discount), but for some reason they only make that for Xbox 360 (I bought one last April and love it). There are plenty of sale prices for hardware on all platforms though.

I've had RB3 for a couple weeks, and I'm still a bit confused by the menus and modes. Is there no world tour mode ala RB2? I can't find anything like it.

Also, I must say I'm a bit disappointed with the lack of songs I have that use the keyboard. After importing my other content, it's often hard to find something I want to play that has the keyboard part.

I haven't looked too closely, but it seems to me like not all of my content has imported. By simply booting up RB3, should that import all of my DLC, RB1 & RB2 songs, or is there something special I need to do?

No world tour as such--just the Road Challenges.

None of the content released prior to the launch of RB3 has keys parts, though you can play their 5-lane guitar and bass parts using your keyboard. 65 out of 83 on-disc RB3 tunes have keyboard, though not all of the parts are very interesting. Much of the post-RB3-release DLC songs have keyboard (I just checked and there are 93 songs with pro keys on the RB Music Store).

All of your purchased DLC and anything that you've previously exported should appear without further effort (with the exception of a couple of RB1 songs, "Dani California" and "Black Hole Sun"). Just as with RB1, you have to pay a fee to export songs from RB2 ($10, I think), using the code for the RB2 bonus songs on the back of its instruction pamphlet; as with the RB1 export, a small list of songs cannot be exported because they couldn't get permission.

Thanks for the info, Mike.

It's good to know you can play guitar parts with the keyboard if you want.

Damn, I like those RB1 songs they didn't include!

Yeah, so do I, particularly "Black Hole Sun". I was kind of pissed, because I'd already paid to export RB1 and can play those songs in RB2 and Lego. When you export RB1, the songs get ripped from the disc into individual files--they must have had to insert code to ignore those two (all other RB games export as a downloaded pack). There was one Soundgarden and one RHCP song excluded from the RB2 export as well ("Spoonman" and "Give It Away", resp.), so something weird is going on with those bands--they might have some sort of exclusivity thing going on with Guitar Hero. A couple of times since RB3 released, I've popped in the RB2 disc just to play "Black Hole Sun". Sucks .

Still looking for a way to "delete" Visions without having to delete the entire Rock Band Free Pack 01...

[Yes, only MS points are listed, but as the link states the sale will apply to PS3 1/11-1-25].

argh, I already own the songs I want to own on that list! I need to develop restraint when it comes to RB DLC, the stuff I'm not super excited about I should just wait for a sale on

Success this weekend finding a used Rock band 2 drum set and a new RB3 cymbals set, all for about $85.

Who wants to petition Harmonix to put this song up as DLC? Flight of the Bumblebee at 320bpm (starts @ 2:20).

The new Linkin Park track pack coming out this week is listed for RB3. Will this work on RB2 as well (obviously the pro features won't).

Thanks!

No, all "main" Rock Band DLC released after RB3 itself, starting with the Doors release, requires RB3.
