Will this work?

Hey guys,

Alright...so here is my problem.

Currently I have a sound system set up with a Sony receiver. I have a TV also, which has only 1 video input. I have a Wii in which I have its video cable connected to the TV, and the audio in an input on the receiver. This works fine. Now, last night I got a dvd/cd player that I wanted to hook up to the receiver/TV as well. But..as I said, there is only 1 Video input on the TV.

So far, I have put the audio cables and put them from the DVD player into an input on the receiver, however, to solve my lack of video inputs on my TV, I have a possible solution, but I just want to run it by you guys.

My receiver appears to have 1 video/audio output area as well. I was wondering...what if I take all 3 cables from my Wii (audio and video) and put it in an input on my receiver; take all 3 cables from my DVD player and put them into another input on my receiver....would I then be able to just take a video cable and put it from the video output to the video input on the TV, and be able to switch between the Wii's input and the DVD's input from my receiver? If I did this, do you think the video that is being outputted would switch between the Wii and DVD? I mean...where there are video inputs, and only 1 video output...I would assume that is how it'd work?

Hopefully you guys can help me out,

Thanks,
Jeff

Without knowing what your exact components are, what you're describing sounds like you would use composite video (yellow) and stereo audio (red/white) everywhere. That should work.

samsurd2 is right. This should work just fine for you. Of additional note from samsurd2's response is that you might have better options available to you than just the standard yellow, white, and red connections.

Both the input of the TV and the inputs and outputs of your receiver have the opportunity to limit which of the video options available on your DVD player and Wii you can ultimately use. Most TV's with only one input will typically only have the yellow, white, and red connections. If your TV's input happens to have anything more, such as S-Video, or possibly component, and if your receiver has a matching output (might be a separately labeled outputs for component) then you might be able to enjoy even better quality video on your TV.

Depending on how many other video components you have (is there a VCR in your system too...a cable box or satellite receiver?) you will probably find that hoooking up everything through your receiver is much more convenient for both audio video switching and will also help to ensure that your TV picture and receiver's audio match up just by changing one input instead of 2 (1 on the receiver and from TV Channels to TV's video input).

(Warning, once you start connecting everything through your receiver, you'll be entering a new arena where many more temptations exist to upgrade... upgrade... upgrade... :-))

Hey,

Thanks for the help guys! Last night I grabbed an extra yellow video cable I had lying around just to test if this would work; good news is it does.

However, this TV that I have is an older one; I mean, it's fine for what I need, but it only has the composite red, white and yellow inputs.

Now...I currently have a separate remote for my DVD/CD player, however...on my receiver's remote there are buttons for a DVD player....would it be possible to somehow get my receiver remote to control my DVD player? Would that be a feasible/simple process?

Now...today I plan to go pick up a composite video cable (that is a little more than just the stock black cable). From the ones listed at this site, which would you suggest? http://www.radioshack.com/family/ind...odsInSession=1

I'm thinking of going with some monster one that is under $30. Do you think that will filter out most (if not all) of the distortion from my speaker cables, and provide nice video quality to my TV?

Thanks,
Jeff

Monster cables are notoriously over priced Go to the local Wal-Mart (or similar) to get your cables. They have been my source for all cables except HDMI (those I buy from Monoprice.com).

Are there any composite video cables that you would suggest? I was looking at Monster, as you said, and also I found this NXG one ( http://www.radioshack.com/product/in...ductId=2407236 ) that looks appealing.

Maybe, but if the price does happen to be comparable (as they sometimes can be found), they ARE good cables.

Monster does make some nice cables, though not everyone needs nor can tell the difference between the less expensive cables and those that cost much more. [You'll probably already know if you're the type who can tell such things...] The Radio Shack cables you're looking at should do just fine. You may also wish to check out www.monoprice.com, as I have found all the cables I've gotten from them to be of very good quality / reliability with a very friendly price. As for the remote control on your receiver, its ability to control your DVD player will depend on the type of remote that it is. There are many receivers that offer unified remotes -- meaning that the other product buttons on the remote are typically pre-programmed with the most common codes for that brand's products -- i.e. your Sony Receiver's DVD button may only speak to the most common Sony DVD players. If the remote is universal, however, then you may be able to program it to control your player regardless of brand -- especially if it offers a learning mode as did the one with my own Sony receiver... The only way to know on that is to check in the manual for that receiver. Good luck! --K
