Need some help, fellas. And it's probably a stupid question.
I have a Toshiba A3 player (connected directly to TV with HDMI 1.3a Category 2 cable from monoprice) and a XBOX360 (sort of irrelevant but the same issue, this is connected directly to TV w/ component cables). My TV is a Samsung Plasma A650 model. I'm pretty sure the A3 has the latest firmware. I'm not at home to check right now, but I just upgraded it a few weeks ago.
Now, I USED to have optical cables coming directly out of both devices into my Yamaha YHT-470 receiver and would get 5.1/DTS sound fine out of both of them. I'm well aware the receiver isn't up to snuff for any of the fancy TrueHD business, so I'm not too worried about that.
However, I decided to change everything up a bit to free up cable clutter and to free up the inputs on my receiver. I was also experiencing an echo'ing effect when my TV & Surround sound were on during movies. I also would have a lack of 'background' sound when listening to movies through the surround sound and the TV muted. I now have an optical cable running from my TV into my receiver, and no opticals on the aforementioned two devices. A friend of mine has it setup this way for his devices (360, PS3, cable box) and it works fine. I, unfortunately, can not get digital sound to come through my A3 or my 360, now. Either on HD-DVD's or regular DVD's. I have tried every combination of the SPIF & HDMI audio settings in the player setup menu.
Here's the wierd thing, my Motorola DVR cable box gets 5.1 output perfectly. All that has is a HDMI cable (same type as the HD-DVD one) directly to the TV. So it's as if the 360 and HD-DVD player either aren't sending the proper signal to the TV, or the TV doesn't 'know' that digital audio is coming to it on those inputs to send to the receiver via its optical cable.
