get the panasonic, I've had the hitachi before and currnently have the panny.

The panasonic definitely has the better picture (the hitachi does not have progrssive scan).

i just had the same delima. i picked up the Panasonic TH-42PX75U 42" Plasma yesterday. not sure why, i guess all the reading here persuaded me that way. i thought the panny looked better in the store, but i know that doesn't mean much.

The model you have selected is not Hitachi's best, but that is what they are offering as a new model this year. However, the Hitachi does offer 1080 vertical lines. The previous generation 42" Hitachis (HDS69, HDT79 and HDX99) have received very positive reviews.

Panasonic, it's not even really a question. The blacks look terrible on the Hitachi, even after the rep went into the service menu to try and fix it. Horrible....

Panny = lexus
Hitachi = kia

Hitachi

-resolution advantage.

Well, that's one crummy Lexus you're driving. While the model the original poster was asking about is new and a lower-end model for Hitachi, the latest Consumer Reports ranked the Hitachi 42HDX99 above both Panasonic 42" models from last year (600 and 60 series). While I am on record in this forum as skeptical as to the overall utility of those ratings because Consumer Reports is so concerned with value, the HD PQ ratings were exactly the same for both TVs, and the Hitachi scored better on SD material. I have yet to read a poor review of a Hitachi 42" set. I guess because Panasonic has previously only offered a very limited selection of models that their buyers think that every other manufacturer does the same thing. No question that Panasonic has excellent PQ, it's just frustrating to read all these "opinions" from Panasonic fans that everything else is junk - especially when it is not true.

I should also add, further to 42plasman's point, that Hitachi introduced 16-bit processing last year, and it is featured on all of their 42" and 55" TVs. I would imagine it is the same for the new 42" and 50" models this year, although admittedly, they are lower-end models.

However, if you want to talk about the aesthetics of those particular offerings from Hitachi and Panasonic, then I would suggest the following:

Hitachi = Maybach

Panasonic = Yugo

Granted, the new Panasonics look much better.

I have a Hitachi 42SDS69 and love it. Amazing clarity in HD.

I saw the ad as well for the Hitachi for $XXX and jumped on it. The pickup date was pushed out a week. I happen to go up to Circuit City and they had the Panny and Hitachi side by side. I played with the settings on the Hitachi but just could not get it to look anything like the Panasonic. I went to Sears and grabbed the Panny and cancelled the Hitachi.

Just my two cents.

Panasonic is far better.

You'll be happy with either, but I prefer Hitachi for the better greyscale.
