Do I need a new DVD player?

OK, so I'm wondering about getting a new DVD player. The one I currently have is about 3 years old. It's a Toshiba DVD/Tivo unit(SDH400). I don't use Tivo anymore since it was cheaper to get a DVR through Comcast. So basically it's just a DVD player now. The specs are pretty good on it. I just recently got a new receiver(Onkyo 605). The 605 upconverts. I have my current DVD player going in through component(no HDMI). When I've played DVD's, it's still saying 480p even though it's supposed to upconvert(this is a whole nother issue though, lol). So I'm wondering if there is any point in getting an upconverting DVD player to replace the one I have now. I would really like the HDMI connection on some of the new DVD players. I'm looking at the Oppo 980. Would I see enough of a difference? I'm assuming my Onkyo is upconverting the signal, but perhaps it doesn't show up as doing so through my tv. Would a new DVD player be worth it or just a waste of money? Thanks.

What display are you using?

Are you fanatical about your dvds?

How much can you spend?

I have a Sony KDF50A20. Max res is 1080i. I wouldn't say that I'm fanatical about my DVD's. Don't really even watch a ton. The Oppo 980 would be about the max that I would spend. I would love an HD-DVD or Bluray player, but I'm gonna wait on that. I figure maybe 2 or 3 years down the road I could get one of those. In my opinion the players are still too expensive, the disks are too expensive and I would prefer to find out "who wins", if anyone, before buying.

I'd wait. (I say that even though I have bought an SD-DVD player within the last year when I could have gone HD).

You can pursue better SD-DVD players, but this gives diminishing returns. There is only so much info on a dvd, and unless you are fanatical about trying to squeeze out the last few percent of image quality, it isn't worth it.

If either or both of the HD formats survive there will be players in a couple years that are more "universal" in terms of playing additional audio and video formats.
