Do I need a new DVD player?

I'm looking at the Oppo 980. Would I see enough of a difference? I'm assuming my Onkyo is upconverting the signal, but perhaps it doesn't show up as doing so through my tv. Would a new DVD player be worth it or just a waste of money? Thanks.

I have a Sony KDF50A20. Max res is 1080i. I wouldn't say that I'm fanatical about my DVD's. Don't really even watch a ton. The Oppo 980 would be about the max that I would spend. I would love an HD-DVD or Bluray player, but I'm gonna wait on that. I figure maybe 2 or 3 years down the road I could get one of those. In my opinion the players are still too expensive, the disks are too expensive and I would prefer to find out "who wins", if anyone, before buying.
