Yah, Appaloosa was a little iffy for me. I like westerns, even the boring and slow moving ones. My biggest criticism of this film is the editing and structure of the final product. Seems as though they took a 4 hour movie and edited it down to it's present state. At one point I actually rewound the movie because I thought I missed something or accidentally hit the forward skip button or something.
I will say no more as to not "spoil" it for anyone. I don't think Renee was really the right person for that role either.
I digress....

Smarty, I'd ordinarily never argue with you about most anything, and I haven't seen the movie either, but IMO Renée is the right person for any role
Here she is at the Globes:

BTW, when I watched Max Payne, I had a few stuttering issues (I'm guessing seamless branching points). It just stuttered a bit but nothing more. I guess I saw it 5 or 6 times? Like others, when I rewound the movie 10 sec or so, the stuttering was not there.

Movie itself was kinda slow for an action movie. It was just OK for me. Nothing great, but not terrible. Sort of in the Apalloosa cataegory.
I have always thought it's more like the Sin City style of a movie. Seamless branching stutters while playing it with your 1400 !? That's blasphemy! Totally unheard of.

Well, if you had used your 1400 to play one of Ed Harris' commentaries, he did say that she was a very convincing "manipulating" bee-otch for the role.

That may very well be. For some reason I have an "eye" for editing, and this movie was just edited way too much. It seemed like every 15 minutes, the story line jumped forward about a year with no explanation.
I dunno, maybe she was a manipulating beeotch, but I never saw much of that except for in you know where with you know who.
I liked Appaloosa, but expected more form Ed Harris. Maybe my expectations were set too high, hoping for an "awesome western" to be born again .
I bought this one as a blind buy. Still debating wether or not to put it in the sell pile .

Barney's recommendation, watch it again with a borrowed 1400 . there were actually 4 "you know whos" she was comm... what that word Everett? Commiserate with . Also watch the extra features before selling it. The funniest scene has to be the "juridiction" scene... Hellarious!

oh, I thought it had something to do with satanic worshippin' or something . I would love to have mine put up there. But Barney's just a common man contributor to the AVSforum .

Commiserate... good one.
Ya, never watched any of the special features. I used to do that more when I actully had free time .
I suppose I could throw the extras on while I'm sitting here working .

Oh don't worry, no Big Brother watching over me or anything. Just my own gig I work at 24/7. I work on my puter while watching the kids, surfing AVS, all while sittin here in my jammies .
I have to go out on the road to work one or two days a week, but that's about it.
Of course if I actually stayed off AVS for more than 15 minutes, I probably wouldn't have to work so late into the evenings .

Oh you know, I meant to write that. It was very much like Sin city in terms of style. Blatant copy as a matter of fact!

Ironic that it's called "seamless" branching! But interestingly enough, this is the first movie that I had the stuttering problem with.

I'm sorry guys but I'll have to disagree, SIN CITY is an excellent movie, very well done artistically, Max Payne is a sh%&^& movie. I rented it and thought it would be something like SIN CITY (I have to agree that the cover of the movie is a blatant copy of SIN CITY) but the movie was nothing like it, it was too slow, I was waiting for it to "begin" the whole time I was watching it but it never did.

WHADABOUT THE MOVIE BARNEY?
Rent: Yes
Boomoo Collection: No

I think the whole Saw series coulda ended 3/4 into Saw III. Even though Saw V introduces 5 new people to the game, like Saw III and Saw IV, so much time is spent trying to introduce another character to continue Jigsaw's legacy. While Amanda was his first accomplice, a second, original accomplice is just too much. Plus I don't believe this is the last we will hear of the series since we still don't know what is in Jigsaw's black box given to his widow . Reference material audio presented on Blu-ray should be a good rental for any fan trying to keep up with the series.

Agreed. I havn't seen Max Payne, but I love Sin City. I just watched it the other night on Blu-ray and the PQ was amazing.

Yup. That's why I said "It was very much like Sin city in terms of style" Stylistically, the false snow falling, comic book like look and feel, were all very much like Sin City. The movie never got started, you're right about that.

It was an OK/So-so rental, but I would never buy it.

It seems to me that BD movies played on my 1400 (connected to an Optoma HD80 projector via HDMI through an Onkyo 706 AVR set to through) are much darker than they should be, Certainly less bright than any other source via HDMI or component going into the projector. I've been trying to find reference to this issue in this thread and others on the Web but haven't yet.

Has anyone here noticed anything like what I am describing? I also sense a slight color shift to a yellow-ish sort of orange-ish warmth to most disks. When I feed the player SMPTE color bars it looks reasonably good (although still on the dim side IMO).

Are there some places in the menu settings, perhaps a service menu hidden, that would allow me to boost the video gain? I know I've been watching a few dark movies lately (Dark Knight, Hellboy II, Ironman) but even movies like Across the Universe have this problem.

Maybe it's the player? HD-DVDs on my Toshiba look fine. My own own video productions shot and edited in 1080i and burned to Blu-Ray also look a bit dim to me. I know I can adjust the image on the projector but that just seems like a band-aid to a problem that might be adjustable on the 1400.

Your collective wisdom on this matter is appreciated. Thanks.

The brightness issue has been mentioned in one of the early threads. It was very apparent in the opening scenes of "Kingdom of Heaven". When compared with a rented SDVD version I played on my up scale player, there was a significant difference. Also later when I played the blu-ray verson on my Sony BDP-S1, the opening scenes were much brighter on the Sony.

My P1400 is the same way. The black level is considerably lower than all other devices so I had to place it on its own HDMI input into the TV. My TV was ISF calibrated so I knew that its settings were correct. After first thinking I was nuts, I played a DVD verison of DVE on both the P1400 and a DVD player, and sure enough, the black level on the P1400 was way to low (all vertical bars in the pluge slide were invisible).

I have never found any way to correct this problem so I have always had to keep it on a separate input on my TV.

Hello everybody. I'm a new owner of the 1400. Bought it used yesterday for $120. Is that a good deal? Anyways I haven't had a chance to watch a blue ray movie yet. But I have watched some sddvd's. When I turn off my the 1400 in the middle of a movie than turn it back on the movie starts all over. Is this normal? My last dvd player would start right where the movie left off.

120 is not really that great of a deal, considering you can get 1.1 profile players for about the same price, and a quality 2.0 profile player for maybe $50 more. If you enjoy the player, that's what counts.

The resume, or NON-resume function you are experiencing is most likely due to the Java on a lot of the discs. The discs that encorperate this can not be resumed after the discs is stopped. What makes it even worse, is a flaw with the 1400 where if you keep it paused for more than 5 minutes, the dang player will stop the disc. Then if that disc is Java enabled, you have to start all over... again .

well this sucks. I'm usually one to get good deals too. My whole system cost me less than $2k. Anyways at least I got a blue ray player now. The non-resume function sucks too. Does this also happen with blue ray disc or just dvd's?

I wouldn't feel too crossed over the fact. 120 bux for a BD player is a deal, even if it's a Samsung. I still use the 1400 to watch Blu-ray movies to this day.

Resume play for BD's is a plague that has been around since the beginning. You can read on the below link to catch up on the topic. It affects all BD players, but not every BD's can not resume play correctly.

I was watching "Invincible" the other nite. I have my 1400 connected to my V663 Yammy with the HDMI output going from there to my Panny 50" plasma. When I turned the movie off to go to bed, I accidently hit the power button for the tv first (I usually turn off the AVR and 1400 first and the tv last out of force of habit though not sure there is a correct way of doing all of this). When the tv turned off, it automatically stopped and turned off my 1400. That in itself surprised me. I guess the HDMI signal loss to the tv was sensed by the 1400 causing it to stop? But then it turned itself too.
In any case, normally when I turn off a BR disc and start it back up the following day, I gotta go thru all the BS before the movie starts as you guys know. But when I went to watch the rest of the movie the following nite, oddly enough when I turned everything on, Invincible automatically started playing right from the spot when I had turned the tv off the night before. I didn't even have to hit the play button. Hmmmmm...........

now if you really see how elaborate BD-Java can be if implemented right, try the Walk Hard Dewey Cox Story boomoo. The dang thing asks you do you want to resume play at the same location even after you play another disc before it.
