I think this is true for the most part. Most folks will leave it on "Last Valid" as a preset listening mode for the various audio input formats and NOT what it is supposed to be, e.g. TrueHD should presets to TrueHD.

But Dolby EX is not one of the listening mode you can preset to. It is on its own menu item, under Setup >>> Audio Adjustment >>> Dolby EX. The only option is "Auto" or "Manual". Auto will allow you just two listening modes as an option, Dolby EX or THX Surround EX. While Manual, you can select additional listening modes compatible with Dolby EX.

Saw Max Payne last night and I didn't it was all that badd. Granted several seamless branching stutters were encountered watching the Unrated Director's Cut version, but overall I didn't get the "movie was over before it even started" kinda feeling. It had closure? The DTS-HD MA was also refernce material...

I dunno? I'll watch the Theatrical version tonight and wrap up the Technical Review. Also, I thought Samual L. Jackson was in this movie... with the weird clown makup and all... probably it a different movie I'm thinking of?

This is my second time watching Max Payne and I must admit I kinda like it. Audio is superb on Blu-ray, reference material easily. Style in presentation is very well done and the storyline has something for any action fan can appreciate. I'm not saying it is the greatest movie of all time or anything, but for a movie, watching it on your home theater system, I was entertained and appreciate the underlying artistic effects of the film itself. Maybe I like truth of Nordic Valkyries and Scandinavian/Viking mythology. Maybe because Barney's a sucker for redemption especially if the wife and kids has been taken away prematurely and unjustifyably. And maybe because Barney picked up on, appreciated, the subtle artistic presentation of the last scene changes in the weather. Or coulda been the perdy girls and blowing thing up in the movie. But for whatever strange reason, Max Payne can't really be dismissed as another bad overhyped/underhyped flick. Give it a fair rental and don't be surprised if you want to catch it on sale and add it to you boomoo collection.

As promised, I present the third issue of KingLeer's Monthly 1400 Compatibility Report!

Somewhat of a slow month for Blu-ray movies for The Leer.

Player: Samsung BD-P1400
Firmware: 1.7
Connectivity:
audio - bitstreamed
video - component 1080i
Receiver: Onkyo TX-SR875
Speaker setup: 6.2
Display: Samung 30" widescreen CRT

January's Blu-ray Movies:
  • Wanted (DTS-HD MA 5.1) - several audio dropouts throughout the movie. In particular, a dropout at 20:10 was consistently reproducible.
  • Bottle Rocket (DTS-HD MA 5.1) - no issues
  • Pineapple Express (Dolby TrueHD 5.1) - no issues

January's SD-DVD Movies:
  • The Big Lebowski - no issues
  • Feast (horror 2005) - no issues
  • Where Eagles Dare - no issues
  • Dune: Extended Edition - no issues (but grainy as hell)

I think this is the month that I upgrade to 2.0 firmware. I couldn't be bothered to do the update and re-test Wanted, my suspension of belief could not be extended into another viewing.

Really looking forward to February: Being There and My Name Is Bruce will both be blind buys! This month I'm also hoping to work my way through Band of Brothers on blu, a gift from the holidays I haven't yet had the chance to crack the seal on.

No, buddy. I still have the BD35. I just seem to can't get rid of my evil ways, I guess. There isn't a boomoo I haven't been able to get the 1400 to not play. So I still continue to watch movies with the 1400 for no apparent good reason ? I just use the BD35 and the PS3 to test loading time and do BD-Live/BonusView stuff with.

Next up the technical review for Ghost Town... playing with the 1400?

naw, I still haven't come up with a good reason to give to my Boss, aka The Wife, why I bought the BD35 while the 1400 is still being used to play all the movies .

Having been with a tech junky for a while, I think? she still understands, I hope. This stuff is addictive. I mean, I still got an eye out for the Sony 550 and the Oppo now . I'm just sick , I guess!

Samsung BD-P1400 Blu-ray Player is the perfect set with all the features i need for entertainment. The crisp and clear picture with advanced Blu-ray technology is excellent. The feature i liked most is the sharpness setting and noise reduction system.

I liked OP1. I've seen it about 20 times by now of course. I havn't heard anything about the 2nd one, though I was aware of it coming out. I'm sure the kiddies will not be disappointed. In fact, I may tell the wife to rent that one for us tomorrow too.

How come British action is a little bit weird and their humor is a little bit crude? RocknRolla is one of those movie you can pass on the rental isle. It offers little to no cinematic enjoyment. Tho some who has the taste for this kind of movie may find it appealing and somehow artistic, I find it to be very stupid in making a plot out of nothing and somehow the ending justify the means, kinda lame. Don't get me wrong, I can stand Layer Cake, and maybe even endure Run Fatboy Run, as a British production. But RocknRolla is something else. Maybe it's King's cup of tea...

RocknRolla is a jargon used in the UK maybe close to the term "playa", "balla", "OG", or a "high-rolla" here in the US. What RocknRolla means to Barney is one stupid rental.

That's the one! I really enjoyed that movie. All the goofy characters, the action scenes etc. Quite enjoyable!

sup King. I'll put Twin Town on the list. Barney's more of a Space Buddies type of movie guy . They had 2 copies on BD to purchase, but none to rent... at a rental store ? That don't make no sense.

Tonight for the 1400 technical review... Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist ? Hope it aint like Juno . That was a stupid movie .

nah, not like JUNO at all even if they share a co-star.

from what I gleaned from reviews et. al. NICK and NORAH... is largely an urban comedy of a micro-Kultur clash....wanna-be hip East Village chicks livin' the life(probably on Daddy's credit cards ) versus modern-day Jersey boys.

I'll probably wait until it hits pay-per-view at least but I think it'll provide some laughs as I remember all the people like that I knew in NYC!!

likely NOT the Purple One's cup of tea but ya never know...

I wouldn't write off Barney too fast. He is a little more than one dimensional. After all, The Love Guru is still one of his favorites ... just misunderstood?
