The ERROR message re: "update data" I got when I tried to install my first FW 2.0 disc must have meant that my disc was "bad" somehow.

Since I make 'em, and then just store them in a hard plastic sleeve until I need them, I've never had that happen before.

Always makes me "crazy"! LOL!

Anyway, all went well, and even MAX PAYNE loaded!! Whoopee!

Took a long time, but I never complain.

As long as my little 1400 keeps chugging along and playing my BD's, I'm a happy camper.

I can't afford another new player right now, nor can I afford to have it professionally set up like I did with the first one. (CC is now closing, and that upsets me! LOL! They were my favorite electronic place in the small town in which I live. I'm not "fond" of BB. But I digress. HA! )

The price we pay to be "early adopters," huh!? LOL!

Thanks again, "Smarty Pants," for trying to help!

I feel so "empowered" when I'm able to do it myself! LOL!

Ahh, glad to see you're back to watching boomoos again. Now gone and enjoy Max Payne! Have you read my review of MP? I was branded heavily by my amigos for like it. You should enjoy the reference material sound quality regardless. I with you on the 1400. I don't really care about the long loading time as long it plays boomoos. Enjoy the show grandma... I mean buddy !

btw thanks Smarty. Didn't I tell you that once in the 1400 owners club, just like the bloods and crips, you're in 4life!

  1. Successful implementation of a screensaver to prevent burn-ins.
  2. Resume play of any Universal titles regardless if it contains BD-J or not.

From the description, it sounds like the 1400 never took the CD. The first 6 minutes or so, your 1400 is verifying the FW versions and loading the new one into persistent memory for installation. Once all is good, the CD tray will open and the 1400 asks you to install it or not. Note that the tray opens and you can take the CD out at this stage. As Smarty has already mentioned, something went wrong with loading the FW into persistent memory. Try burning the 2.0 image to another CD...

If that doesn't work, you may have to temporary hook it up to the LAN and try the ethernet connection for updating your 1400 to 2.0. Max Payne, was that a Fox title? If so, the loading "circle of life" can take sometime to complete. Also how many time did you try to load MP? Sometimes if your 1400 appears to be stuck on stupid, you may have to power off and then back on the 1400 with the disc inside to load. Granted this may add to the total loading time but it should never more than 4 minutes of spinning round and round .

*********************
Just got your responses and help this AM, and even though the situation has already been rectified, I wanted to comment and thank you, Barney, for taking the time to explain.

I WAS having trouble with MV last summer! LOL! I think I probably did write on one of these 1400 threads. (I do subcribe to another one, too, but this is the ONLY one that matters! LOL!)

Since I had been getting along just fine on FW 1.2 since 8-07, I did not want to update. Makes me nervous. So I just let MV "go" and exchanged it for another disc.

Then when WANTED came out on 12-2 and it didn't play, I KNEW I had to "bite the bullet" and do an upgrade. *Sigh*! WANTED was a movie that I had been DYING to see. (I'm a James McAvoy "junkie"! LOL!)

Did 1.9 perfectly via disc as I cannot do the internet connection "thing". (I always amaze myself when that happens. HA!

And I re-purchased MV just to check. Whatta' ya' know! It played perfectly with the 1.9.

I always make myself a new CD when the new FW updates come out. I do NOT run to the player to do it. "If it ain't broke, don't fix it"! LOL! That's my motto.

I tried loading MP three times (before successfully updating to 2.0), and I always follow your suggestion of power down, etc. Worked with THE DUCHESS!! LOL!

And it IS a Fox disc. I'm aware of how they can get "stuck on stupid"! LOVE that, Barney!!

Yes, Barney! I DID read your Boo-Moo review of MP. I LOVE Mark Wahlberg, too! That's why I got it. As a 63 year-old "gramma" , I KNOW I'm not the usual demographic that is being sought for movies like MAX PAYNE and WANTED. But I do love "me" a good action flick every now and then. And as mentioned B4, I'm a JM "junkie" and a MW fan.

BTW, your Boo-Moo reviews are not only helpful and technically sound, they are so creative and fun to read, Barney. Even if I'm not interested in the movies for myself, (as a former English teacher! LOL!) I LOVE reading them. Especially enjoy how you "compare" the film you're reviewing to other films.

EX: For GHOST STORY, you wrote, "Ghost meets The Sixth Sense and a little bit of Stranger Than Fiction and The Visitor"! Love that. I bought GS (not BD) but standard DVD. You were so right (although I haven't watched THE VISITOR yet. Planning on watching that soon on my HD on Demand.)

My point being that I ENJOY and BENEFIT from your Boo-Moo reviews tremendously, Barney!!!

Thank you for them and for all your help.

Yes. I am in this thread for life! HA! HA!!

Glad to hear it Ms. laddieluv . Barney does not mean any disrespect for his elders. Also, glad to see you're enjoying boomoos and the 1400 technical reviews have helped. I think it's a wonderful story and situation to be in when you are enjoying fine film, regardless of age and as long as you're young at heart that counts, I guess. You're Barney's type of movie goer (full of action and things getting blown up ) and you're also Barney's inspiration and biggest fan. thx!

You should post more and shoot some breeze with us about the things we are so passionate about... I'm surprised as an English teacher, you haven't corrected Barney's pig latin and dirty south dialect yet?
Barn, I going out on a limb and say IN BRUGES is one of the very best films floating around currently... better than Patton! I did a thread search for Bruge and got no hits and it's not available in BD, so I'm guessing you haven't reviewed it yet. Anyway, swearing (really lots!), laughs, tears, death (really graphic!), love, life... who could ask for more from a moovee???
Joe-Bob it...

We have a Samsung HLT 6187s LED DLP (which you'd think would work better with the 1400 than some other sets...) and last night we decided to watch the new Mummy movie. At one point I was getting up to get some refreshment and my sweetie was off to check the laundry (or some such). I paused the movie and told her to hit the play button followed by the pause button within four minutes (she knows about this issue and understood immediately). Well, we were both late returning and, voila! the Universal screen saver was on the screen instead of the blue Samsung screen. I was so happy!!!

We sat down and I hit the play button and... nothing. The counter on the 1400 indicated that the disc was playing (i.e., slowly moving ahead) but no sound or picture - the Universal screen saver was still on the screen...

Eventually I had to hit the stop button and work back to where we were from the beginning of the disc. But for a brief shining moment, I thought things were going to be all right. Sigh... Come on Oppo, save me!

The Popup button will get you back to where you paused the movie when the Universal screensaver comes on.

Correct. For some odd reason, these new Universal discs with the screen saver are limiting the buttons that will resume the movie.
Just as Lujan states, hitting the Popup button works as a resume function.
Also any of the bookmark buttons, red, blue, green, or yellow will resume play from the Universal screensaver...

I have often noted this in the technical reviews.

WHADABOUT THE MOVIE BARNEY?
Rent: Yes
Boomoo Collection: No

Traitor is a rock solid rental for Barney. It is a political espionage movie, which reminds us how we are looked upon in some part of the middle east and the reasons our troops/heroes are still there. The storyline is very believable and makes one thinks of possible scenarios by terrorists against us. It is everything but a hate film, first and foremost. I kinda got the feeling that everyone should watch this film as their civil duty, to gain knowledge or remind us what we are facing today. It may directly or indirectly affects us somehow somewhere.

BD presentation is almost reference material surrounds. One of the best 5.1 Dolby TrueHD mix I've heard in a long time. Traitor warrants a rental high on your priority list.

Very good review as always Barney...this title is arriving tomorrow.

Maybe I'll play this on the 1400....nope, the loading time is too long!
arhh, give it a shot... as long as it plays on the 1400 is all that matters, right?

Henry Poole was out and still no The Life Before her eyes BD. I'm on my last rental for this go-around. Zodiac should be a good rental up next (and last).

As always, there were some movies/DVDs I watched that I didn't do a review for but thought to mention it cause I promised to mention the good, the bad, and the downright ugly ('member Rolling Stones BD?) .

The Wackness = stupid
Maid of Honor = so-so. A couple of a/v stutters in the middle.
The Mummy 3 = so-so, but worth having to complete the set.
Space Buddies (DVD ) = so-so, worth 16 bux @ BigRiver

I think I'll take a month off or two at the rental store cause there really isn't any good new releases. Sept for Quarantine which the trailer looks good.

BTW, Barney, what is up with the Panny stuck at FW 1.1??

Panny just released FW 1.7 today...
Barney's paranoid . It's mainly due to the BD35 inability to rollback to the previous FW version. To my understanding you can't do it like the 1400. So I don't have the a copy of the various FW saved, therefore it's not necessary to update the BD35. Plus no issue/reason to update for now , KOW!

Fess up Barney, you're having a hard time keeping both "women" satisfied.
LOL?

'member yaw accused Barney of sleeping with the 1400 manual underneath the pillow? Mrs. Barney wouldn't go for the menage-a-3 then... highly likely a menage-a-4 wouldn't fly now?

Just added Space Buddies and 10,000 BC (my favorite ) to the boomoo collection btw...
Space Buddies??? Really??
first DVD I've played on the 1400 for a long time. The rental was actually enjoyable. I really wanted snow buddies, but they don't have that on blu .

16 bux for a new release Disney title is a bargain.
a netflix rental bd; wiped it off, it loaded in less than a minute, played all the way thru flawlessly.

a slice and dice rock opera, i guess you'd call it. i was expecting a sci fi story.
good music and singing (no dialog). and paris hilton was in it, if anyone cares.
i must have liked it a little cuz i watched it all the way thru. but, i'm glad it was a rental and not a purchase.

imo, only get it if you like rock operas.

Watched Madigascar2 last night. It was pretty good. Like any animated flick, video was outstanding. Sound was very good and had zero issues. Recommended!
i was wondering about that title. Almost stupid enough to grab it... had I known Paris was in it, I would have bitten .

anywhoo, I wonder if our trusty 1400 will play the new 3D discs?... maybe not .

re 'that title'.
upon recall, i think i only watched it all the way thru cuz it loaded so fast and didnt give me any grief.;
best to appreciate when a disc is like that even if the movie on said disc sucks.

nah!

i didnt even know p. hilton was in it til the credits rolled. didnt recognize her in film. but i wasnt looking for her either.

Any idea what those buttons "translate" to on my Harmony 880?
Thanks.
I've added "Popup Menu", "Main Menu", and "Setup Menu" as customized tabs for my 550. Also the red, blue, yellow, and green bookmark buttons should be in their DB. If not, then you can learn it from the original remote. Either way, they can be added as a customized tab for your Harmony. Hope this helps.

Regarding firmware upgrades...

Is it normal for the firmware update process to take considerably less time than the 19+ mins I've been reading about?

I've acquired a BD-P1400 from my brother-in-law that has never had FW updates since its purchase. In preparation for our first BR experience I decided it be best to avoid any playback issues and update to v2.0 following Barney's guide.

Everything looked like it went fine, just as the guide described. The unit shut down, FW disc was removed, I powered it back on again and prepared for the long update. Hunger struck, and I went off to grab a bowl of cereal, and upon my return the select language screen was already up. Couldn't have taken more than 5-8 mins tops.

New FW # is displayed in setup menu, but without a BR disc handy I can't really test anything till our Netflix shipment arrives with today's mail.

I suppose I'm just wondering if a shorter update time is common.

Howdy, how do you do Hado buddy,

WoW, your 1400 is like A-Rod on steroids or something... mahhahhaaha !

As long as it took and the select the language screen comes up, I guess you're fine. Did you do the CD or Ethernet method?
