Watched it all the time.

I don't get it either!

When throwing out inside jokes, make sure someone else besides yourself knows what your talking about!

Anywho, I had the first disc not play on my 1400 last night. Fast & Furious would not play through. Made it about 1h 35min mark and started popping and going to a blue screen. Thought maybe it needed a firmware update, but I see there isn't one.

And as they used to say on The Waltons, "Goodnight John Boy"
(I thought Al was saying yep.)

That's not totally accurate, buddy. I'm writing up the review for Fast & Furious now. Played fine on both of the 1400's over the weekend, FW 1.9 and 2.0.

The other issue is Smarty maybe watching the first season of Happy Days with his Oppo BD-83 and the DVD was probably skipping?
You two numb_nuts need to go watch more Happy Days.
You don't remember the owner of the restaurant that all the kids (and Fonze) hung out at? He used to always walk away from a conversation letting out a big sigh while at the same time saying eyat_eyat_eyat_eyat...

BTW, I've owned 4 Samsung players (2 1400s and 2 5000s) over the past 2 years. I am now down to just 1... soon to be down to 0. Then I can put all this Samsuck stuff behind me.

Oh Oh! I had an actual popping sound and the screen went blue. (no signal screen), then came back on with NO sound and picture in slow motion. More popping, I then I shut it down. Started it at the beginning, worked fine. Went to the end of the Movie, more popping. Disc is fine. Threw it in the PS3, worked just fine, haven't screwed with it since. Thoughts?

I still think Al says "Yep, ye ,ye ,ye ,ye, ye"
It's not Yaat or eyat or whatever made-up word you come up with on your next post! Amusing though!

highly likely the HDMI cable is loose. The Universal Screen gets this way with my HD DVD player when my HDMI cable is loose, either on the player or reciever end. also try switching to a different HDMI cable. Is the player hot already from heat?

here's an excerpt from my unfinished review.

I'll have to try a different HDMI cable. It's out in the open on a shelf, it was kinda warm, but didn't seem too bad. However, it does seem that whenever there is any problem with one of my HD DVD players, it's always seems to be because of too much heat. I've never had a problem with either of my two 1400's, this is a first. Hopefully just a loose cable. Thanks Barney.

Ever since I did the recent firmware update (don't know what it was, but it was maybe 2 weeks ago) I've had trouble playing Blu Rays.

The sound cuts out and the picture is choppy and in semi-slow motion. I got about an hour in and then it starts and won't stop no matter what I do.

The two DVDs I've tried:

Let the right one in

and

He's Just not that into you

Updating firmware is a fierce pain in the behind as I have to cart my TV and player down to the basement. Any tips?
Some of these playback problems can be in relation to firmware download process as well.
One rule_of _thumb when having odd problems with a player and/or firmware, is to reflash the fw. Unfortunately with Samsung, you can not overwrite the same fw on top of itself. So you'd have to go back to the previous fw, the upgrade to the latest again.
Could also be heat, could also be cabling, could also be a POS player problem.

It not something I will have to deal with any longer though. I mentioned yesterday that I was down to just 1 Samsung Blu-ray player. Well, now I'm down to 0.

You folks take care and good luck to you all. You're gonna need it. This is a pretty neat thread, but I certainly must be moving on. It's just that time.

Barney, I have a feeling I may be seeing you (and some others here) in and around the OPPO threads.

Thanks for the quick responses, all.

My girlfriend also seems to think it's heat related as the player does work well for an hour or so then completely craps the bed. I am not technically savvy enough to fix that and I've had horrible experiences mailing electronics back to the company to be fixed.

I think, although it's only been 18 months, that it's time for an upgrade to something with wireless. Off to Bay/Bloor radio, they'll be able to point me in the right direction!

You must know something I don't. Did you finally told Oppo to send Barney his free evaluation BD-83?

Man, this really would sux cause Barney would felt like a duck out of water. Going from Cheezburger in Paradise to "whining" and dining with some of the industry's elitists in a sportcoat. Oh well, guess I can be like the Jeffersons and move on up?!!

I got to go cause Barney got to work on his grammar and punsiateshon cause those Oppo guys are all sportcoat wearin' high class snobs... Barney will soon be part of!

I'd wager a bet and say that heat is one of the main culprits with these units. There may be a hotspot on the decoder board that gets very hot causing the problem. We need someone with a problematic machine and one of those infrared cameras to snap a picture of the exposed boards.

Then again it won't matter if you can't play newer titles on it.

I don't have any thermal imaging device. How bout a turkey thermometer left over from last Thanksgiving and I just take a picture of what it reads on top of the chipset?

This is a hot running machine. I moved mine to the top of the stack and put extra spacers on bottom feet even though I didn't have problems.

I had a sony dvp something-something that acted the same way. One hour of play and it would stop and give the error message (c13)translating to can't read disc. Once it cooled off it worked fine again. Worse in the summer than winter.
Shuffled the decks and that fixed it.

I received my free "evaluation" unit via a Birthday gift.

I have sold my 1400 to a friend (probably will soon be an ex-friend ) and indeed, it is time Barney to see what your (close to) original investment in the 1400 buys today from Oppo. Feel free to PM me for a review...

There is much more "whining" in the Panny 35/55 thread vs. the Oppo thread and BTW, I have sold all of my leisure suits.

Any way of getting A Haunting in Connecticut working on the 1400?
A NETFLIX rental copy of THE MUTANT CHRONICLES
will not play on my 1400.

Grrrrrrrrrrrrrr

Arrrrrrrrggghhh

It teased me by playing all the trailers and logos
but never loaded the main menu . . . and then
froze the player.

Using FW 2.0 over component and bitstream.

Can anyone else confirm this?

Now while this certainly isn't the end of the world
it does beg the point of for what reason would
a Mini Major Genre / Explotation-esque company like
MAGNOLIA screw around with "fancy programming"
that renders the disc on G ONE players.

. . . . AND what is it about the programming that
seems to befuddle my 1400?

but the WORST thing was we ended up watching
RACE TO WITCH MOUNTAIN which had been rented for the nieces and nephews.

It was not good . . . but OF COURSE it played PERFECTLY.

So, again, what does MAGNOLIA think they are accomplishing with "fancy programming" that
DISNEY doesn't think is necessary???

Huh?!?!?!?!

Is Mark Cuban to blame?

Mark??

best

I have mine in a separate compartment but my apartment is hot. There were other issues than just the one (namely my Mad Men discs only start about 20% of the time. I don't know why, but if I play walle for 5 minutes first it seems to work alright.)

Don't feel too left out Barney. Us Oppo owners need FW upgrades as well cuz some discs are not playing right now. Like I said, damn shame all around for Blu-ray. Of course Oppo's player is brand new (and flagship) so the FW fixes should come pretty quickly (let's hope).

if the Oppo isn't playing the Watchmen BD, then I think it's by design? If this is true, then Barney luvs some dOppie engineers!

Where do I sign up??? If they never released a FW to fix that abomination... ever and forever, that's OK in my book. It's like watching Snow Angels and Alpha Dog to torture your soul for 2 dang hours.

I'm pretty sure I'm off to Oppo, Denon or PS3 land in days.

TRAILERS, CLIPS, AND MUSIC VIDEOS

Pitbull ft Pharrell - Blanco

Pitbull - I Know You Want Me (Calle Ocho) (Should have been but not part of the Fast & Furious soundtrack. But still sounds good.)

BARNEY'S BOOMOO FUNFACTS AND TRIVIA
Barney does not assume the accuracy for these funfacts and they are to be used for entertainment purposes only.

The Secure Fence Act of 2006 was signed by President George Bush, which allows for over 700 miles of double-reinforced fence to be built along the US-Mexico border. Headed by the Department of Homeland Security, the border will be equipped with heat, motion, and infared sensors. Aerial drones as well as manned towers with night-vision goggles were part of the bill. $1.2 billion was allocated to initialize the program. Conservatively estimated, $9 billion will be needed to complete it.

Director Justin Lin probably wants to redeem himself from Tokyo Drift and rumors are floating around that the 5th installment of the Fast & Furious franchise may be shot back in Japan.

Rob Cohen directed The Fast and the Furious (2001). John Singleton directed 2 Fast 2 Furious (2003). Justin Lin directed The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift (2006) and Fast & Furious (2009).

At the end of Tokyo Drift, Vin Diesel shows up in the "hammer", a 1970 Plymouth Road Runner SS. The same car showed in Fast & Furious Letty was driving it.

Near the end of the movie, Vin Diesel drove a replica of the "F-Bomb" owned by David Freiberger. A 1973, all steel, 3800 lbs, 1550 hp, Neilson twin turbo racing engine, 480 in3 small block Chevy Camaro.

WHADABOUT THE MOVIE BARNEY?
Boomoo Rent-O-Meter:
Boomoo Collection Worthiness: (Already in Barney's)

I'm not sure what all the complaints are about from the Fast & Furious fans. It's a great movie. I've seen it when it first came out in theaters. Rent it on the first week it came out on BD. Like the BD HT experience so much, I bought a copy the following week. Plus I have the first three on HD DVD. Justin Lin redeemed himself after the Tokyo Drift catastrophic accident (literally). All you need is to watch the first The Fast & The Furious (2001) to get 90% of the plot and to appreciate this 4th Installment. Fast cars, explosions, exotic places, hip soundtrack, and of course sexy senoritas shortyz , I mean what else do you want? OK, the final confrontation between Dom and Fenix could have been a little bit more "hands on" and personal. But you just gonna have to let that one slide.

BD audio video presentation was a mix box of chocolate. I wasn't too impressed with video PQ. For a recent release and this type of film, it could have been a grand slam, like Quantum of Solace. Instead, some scenes were loose in detail and not as sharp and crisp as I would have liked. Almost like a good DVD. I know I'm gonna hear it from some that this is a BD HD at it's finest BS crap, but I'm just saying that there were lots of potential there... I'm just saying.

Audio however was pleasing. I wouldn't say it was a total surprise. Even at the THX certified "Big Room" showing, I couldn't help but to think how the Universal Studio BD release would be like. I mean fast cars racing, hip hop dance mix playing in the background, and explosions, this is a prime example of how surround sound for the home theater environment should strive for in a recent action packed release. Separation and transition dynamics all moved together well as a cohesive unit. Tonal balanced is achieved in all 6 speakers. The surround sound for this baby, you can be proud to demo it to your buddies and neighbors with confidence. Overall excellent BD audio video package. Check it out as a rental if you're not a fan or follower of the series. For fans and followers of the series, skip the rental and go ahead and buy it. A must own, especially for those who have the first three in their collection.

I had the same problem with my Mutant Chronicles Netflix rental. On my BD-P1400, it plays all the trailers, and then nothing. I installed FW 2.0, and still nothing.
