Not true, your royal "purple-ness"! grins. I AM THE hugest Gladiator fan on the planet. LOL!

Seriously, glad to find myself in such fine, fine company.

-snip-

I'm with you, Mr. Barney, in recommending this BD to all Gladiator fans especially. While it might not qualify as "reference material," I'm just so da*n glad to finally have it in BD and have it load and play in my 1400 w/o a new firmware update that I cannot complain at all about the possibility of a couple arrows missing that I didn't notice were missing anyway. And suffice to say, I have watched Gladiator about a zillion times since 2000. So I know each frame by heart. grins.

Since there's "no such thing as reality, only perception," each person is gonna' view it through their own prism. Thus the yelling and disappointment from some.

Loved reading your review and all the triva. I'd forgotten about most of those great tid-bits. For all I know re: Gladiator, I did NOT know that J-Lo was almost Commodus' sister. AACCKK! So glad that didn't happen. Connie Nielson IS Lucilla, IMO.

I'm with you, Barney, in recommending this to people. I was unsure at first after reading some of the less than stellar reviews re: PQ. But the deal at BB simply was too good to resist. So glad I got it. People that are not happy with the Gladiator BD are seeing something differently than how I'm seeing it, I guess.

And coupled with Braveheart?? A fabulous epic BD double-feature. Can't beat it.

"What we do in life, echoes in eternity." - Maximus. Love it.

It is nice to hear you are still alive and kicking, laddieluv, and your 1400 too. I am also glad to hear that you have avoided some of the traps reviewers like us have step into when watching Gladiator. You did not look for something that may or may not be there. Enough to the point it may have distracted you and taken some of the enjoyment of watching this classic...

Also how did you like the the Stevie Nick's Concert BD (If you're young enough to remember )? This BD has a high replay value at the Barney's household this whole weekend... longggg!!!

Sara, you're the poet in my heart
Never change, never stop
And now it's gone
It doesn't matter what for...

Drowning in the sea of love
Where everyone would love to drown
And now it's gone
It doesn't matter anymore...

Young enough to remember Stevie Nicks, indeed. HA!!

Huge Fleetwood fan in the 70's. Not so much Stevie as a solo artist (although my 2nd DH lusted after her. Got rid of him - for (ahem) "other" reasons. But I digress. )

Anyway, I don't "do" concert DVD's - even standard. Big movie fan. Not so much music - except instrumental movie scores i.e. Hans Zimmer, James Horner, Thomas Newman, and many other composers that I'm "nutz" about.

Wanna' laugh big, Barney (and others who may read this??) . I want to get THE POSTMAN BD. LOL!! (I do have trouble with the donkey part at the beginning, but I'll skip through it. ) Truly. I'm a HUGE Costner fan. Hey. To each his own. Gotta' read at least one review first so that I know it's not a complete BD disaster.

I was one of the two people on the planet who bought CUTTHROAT ISLAND BD. Not kidding. It's always been a guilty pleasure for me, and it was $9 at Target. Hey. They were practically paying ME.

Confessions, over. Hope I contributed to someone having a hearty laugh. Good for the health. Done my good deed for the day.

Appreciate your acknowledgment, Barney. Will always love your reviews even if the movies/concerts, etc. are not my "cup 'o tea."

I'm above ground. It's a good day. - AJ

I like Kevin Costner too LL. Both The Postman and Waterwolrd as well.
Something about him makes him easy to watch on screen. Everyone has their different tastes in movies and actors. Anything with Costner, Will Smith, Clint Eastwood, Tom Hanks, and a few others... I can watch almost any movie staring those actors and will probably like it.

With your mention of the "type" of music you like, I'm totally surprised you don't mention being "into" high resolution audio via formats like Super Audio CD, Dvd Audio, and even some great stuff on Blu-ray now too.
The concert discs are great for those that like them, and for SACD and DVDA you of course need a compatible player like an OPPO, but with Blu-ray you can enjoy some pretty awesome hi res audio discs on the BD-p1400 as_is. Some great classical stuff out there, so just a heads up that you might want to check it out.

>>>and I'm pleased you're not afraid to admit it. grins.

Being a Kevin "hater" has been a full time career for many people for years. Trash him every chance they get on every board, blog, and forum. I just don't read 'em anymore. And I've been a huge fan since the late 80's. FANDANGO is another of my favorite movies. It'll probably never see BD, but it's a treasure, IMO.

WATERWORLD is coming out on BD on 10/20. I'm stoked.

As far as music/concerts on BD, just not my "thing." Even though I so love instrumental movie scores, I really only enjoy listening to music in my car and sometimes on my computer (rarely). Long personal story as to why that is. 'Nuff said. But I do love a great score "attached" to a BD movie (i.e. Danny Elman's score for WANTED; Zimmer's score re: PEARL HARBOR, GLADIATOR; Horner's re: BRAVEHEART and so many more). I do crank my 5.1 Onky ss in my "fav" parts, and my little living room "rocks.". grins. Luckily, my dogs are used to it.

To each his own, n'est pas??

Again, above ground. Yet another good day pour moi.

Cheers, all. - AJ

You're right about "to each his own" because I hated "Waterworld". I thought it was very boring.

Kevin Costner is kinda weird for me. Loved him in Bull Durham, loved him in Field of Dreams and a bunch of others. Then he makes movies that I just hate! Very odd. Like you, if I like someone, I tend to like the movie no matter what. Kevin is the one odd ball for me.

What about Dances with the Wolves? Great movie IMO.

Hey Guys

Can some one send me the latest FW on a disc for a pal of mine at work...He's not PC savvy, so I would need a disc. I'll pay for the shipping or the disc. I don't have a burner on my LT.

Thanks

OK I just shot an email back to Samsung. Today's call was probably the most productive and deepest I have gone with them. At first they wanted me to send in my 1400 in to "determine" the cause. To make a long story short, I told them I will only agree to send it in IF they put in writing that I will get my money back if they can not fix the issues with all the BDs that will not play on the current FW 2.0... which I have been saying all along.

Well, they step back from that option for a moment and decided to let me forward the list of movies that will not play on the 1400... Really??? Like if you guys write down why I call almost everyday, yaw should have it!!! I didn't say anything but this is what I wrote back... Keeping my fingers crossed for us!!!

Subject: RE: Attention: Star Lauderdale (Agent 36) BD-P1400/XAA/Star

Ms. Star (Samsung Agent 36),

Thank you for your help today. Per our conversation, below is a list of all Blu-ray disc movies that will not play on the Samsung BD-P1400 BD player. Note that I have the most up-to-date firmware for this model which is version 2.0, Build Date: 12/18/2008.
  • Underworld: Rise of the Lycans - May 12, 2009
  • Terminator 2: Judgment Day (Skynet Edition) - May 19, 2009
  • Ghostbusters - June 16, 2009
  • The Haunting in Connecticut - July 14, 2009
  • The Ninth Gate - August 11, 2009

Also I have been informed ticket #3000527925 have been closed by the last agent assisting me with this issue. Please reinstate this transaction number. This case number should remain active until one or more of the below condition applies:
  1. Samsung has released a new firmware update for the BD-P1400 that will fix playback issues with the Blu-ray discs listed above.
  2. Samsung has determine the above issue is not fixable and a refund will be given to the consumers who have registered the BD-P1400 with Samsung.
  3. Samsung has determine to upgrade owners of the BD-P1400 to a current comparable model in Samsung's line of BD players, the BD-P1600, BD-P3600,or BD-P4600, at no additional cost.

Again thanks for your time and I am eagerly awaiting to hear from you.

Barney, you have been treated the finest in Samsung Customer Service! This is the classic "jerk around" move that is one of the more devious plays in Samsung's deck.

My battle continues. I'm now on my 18th documented call into Samsung Executive Customer Service. It's still too early to tell if I have truly accomplished anything, but I am pretty damned sure I have somebody's attention. I'm hoping I can post more details tomorrow or perhaps the following Monday.

Gents:

Just got off the phone with Samsuck and after briefly talking to 1st tier CS, I was escalated to ECR without even asking! After talking with an Agent (identity concealed), and engaging her with my charm and wit, we had a sorta off-the-record conversation about an internal email that was circulated in her department a couple of days ago that says that "the other department" IS working on a firmware update and will let "her department" know when it is ready. She also mentioned they are starting to get more "red flag" calls regarding FW updates and these concerns are now known by both departments. Don't know exactly what that means but I can not emphasize the importance of calling EVERYDAY and making sure you speak to someone in ECR.

Anyway, that's all I got for today.

BTW, if you don't already have it, here is ECR's number: 1-800-522-7341

money back for the player or shipping it ot them? its amazing that it takes almost a year for them to go "you know, something may be wrong if all these people call about this player".and by "Samsung has determine to upgrade owners of the BD-P1400 to a current comparable model in Samsung's line of BD players, the BD-P1600, BD-P3600,or BD-P4600, at no additional cost." is that all of us who registered our probuct or just you.

I’m posting this in the 1400 and 1500 forum:
On my BD-P1500 (back to FW2.3 since 2.4 messed up too much) the following discs gave the dreaded ‘disc can not be played’ message: Valkyrie, Xfiles, Defiance (played after 10 loading attempts), The Class. All these movies played without a hitch on my BD-P1400. I’m beginning to wonder if it’s something more than a FW problem. Maybe it’s the laser or the transport alignment or something. Or maybe it's a Samsung...oh, that's too cruel...I really try to be grateful.

No joke. I updated the firmware on the 1000 last April --- unplugged it and put it on a shelf. Got it out last week to use in the living room. I thought for laughs I'd try Ghostbusters (was sure it wouldn't work). It loaded and played just fine. Although I'm glad it played it made me even more ticked off about the 1400 not playing it since it is the unit connected to my projector.

^Ya, that's right Jeff. Did you not know that the BD-P1000 has actually gotten 2 firmware updates since the last 1400 firmware update?

just for the record, last nite i watched the bd, 'sunshine'. it loaded and played flawlessy.
i've had this 1400 just about a year now, played about 30 bds on it, and other than 'clear and present danger', it's played everything else.
only bds that 'stuttered' were 'starship troopers 3' in one scene, and 'cool hand luke' in one scene. i think all three were before fw 1.9.
since installing 1.9, no issues at all.

last spring i received and tried to load the samsung cd of fw 2.0 but the 1400 wouldn't read the disc.
they sent me a new cd of 2.0 but i'm not gonna try to install it except as a last resort, if and when it comes to it.

as i've mentioned before, i don't watch that many movies. maybe 3 to 5 per month. and some of those are dvds and hd dvds on the onkyo hd-805.
and, as always, i clean or wash every disc before watching/listening.
i think it helps.

Absolutely no excuse for this crap. These people at Samsung have balls the size of basketballs. Talk about an "in your face" attitude! Hell will freeze over before they ever get another stinkin' penny of mine.
