Samsung BDP1400 Disussion Thread - Page 418

I retract the positive comments I made about FW 2.1. I just tried actually watching the Universal movie "Couples Retreat", and it would not make it past the blue movie rating screen. SO FRUSTRATING!! I tried about 8 times. Sucks, cause I was bragging to my wife last week that I got it working. When I first loaded FW 2.1, I was able to play the movie right away. I was finally able to go to the CHAPTER menu and go to chapter 1.

For the last 2-3 months, it seems that any movies that are distributed by Universal Studios with the semi-transparent discs, will not play in my P1400. I have upgraded the firmware, downgraded the firmware, reset the player... still no luck. The movies either freeze on the main menu or freeze at the first MPAA screen that plays.

According to the Samsung tech that I talked to via chat, "your blu-ray player is defective, send it in for servicing at an authorized repair depot." Of course they want money for that since it is out of warranty. I asked why Samsung isn't releasing firmware updates more often for this player and he stated that it is "old hardware now and Samsung is not supporting it any further." Great... just great.

Anyone else see any correlation with this player and the Universal Studios discs?

Dizza, I know I commented on my bad experiences with the 1400 and newer Universal movies. 'Couples Retreat' was also a bit transparent. I think there are about half a dozen ppl complaining about the 1400 and Universal Studios movie in the last few pages of this thread.

Just thought I'd check in on the old joint. No one home? Not even anymore Barney movie reviews? Oh well, my 1400 hangin in there. It knows it's time is short so its on its best behavior. Watched Saw 4 today.

well, i tried playing a cd on my 1400 for the first time last week. half way thru it just stopped. haven't tried anything since, yet.

hope it still plays bds.

http://www.amazon.com/Sylvania-NB530...9416847&sr=1-1

i feel like such a...a...like a traitor.

nah.
I guess there's still a few of us left. I hardly use the 1400 any more since it's in a guest bedroom. The Sylvania is a great price, even better than the $79.00 Magnovox I bought December of last year.

Well, I have this thread to set to send me daily email updates, so I keep on top of it. I have to admit, this player was been rock solid for me. I got this about two years ago for $150 Canadian, refurbished. Thank god for ebay.

I was going to pull the trigger on a Oppo 80, but figured I might as well wait until this thing no longer works. Sure, its doesnt have BD live or profile 2.0, and load times can be long, but eh, its like that old dog. It just keeps on working.

mine's also been ok for the most part. the cd i tried to play the other night, now that i think of it, it was a dvd-r which should have played but they skip on a lot of players anyway. i was just 'experimenting' with it.
but i'm not sorry to have the 1400. i'll get a better one someday, if they/someone ever makes a really good but affordable one.

My 1400 has been perfect with all cd's I've thrown at it. Never a hiccup.
(Most recent cd 2009 remastered Let It Be by the Beatles). Never tried a "burned" cd, dont want to stress the old gal!

probably a wise decision.

I have been really impressed with this old girl. She had the analog outs which allowed me to enjoy the full HD sound, which was night and day in comparison to everything else.

She has played everything I have put into it. Including the burned music cd's. While the menu for music is not the best, she still played them.

This past weekend, I managed to pick up a Denon AVR-890 for $599 Canadian from future shop. Now, between that and this player, I am just right into what I am watching.

Last night, we watched the Michael Jackson, This is It blu ray. I must admit, I have yet to see a better picture. What a job well done. I was never a huge MJ fan, I more enjoyed the Jackson 5 stuff. I was not even born for the Jackson 5 times, and I was less than 10 years old during MJ's peak stuff in the 80's.

The concert blu ray was a very surreal look into what I believe would have been a great show. I can understand why he is called the greatest entertainer ever.

I just watched the Michael Jackson; This is It blu ray. Let me start by saying, even if you are not the biggest fan, which I am not, this is one for the books.

Aside from the picture quality, which is mostly amazing, it does have a few SD looking moments. This would be because the shots you see are SD. The filming that was happening throughout this movie were never meant for this application.

What makes this really great to watch, is you can first see how MJ is a control freak, but more than that, it illustrates why he was the best entertainer out there. You can watch the progression in his voice, some songs are very bad sounding, with parts the just sing classic MJ. As you sit and watch, he starts getting stronger and stronger, and you say, wow. You can also note the progression of the rehearsals because some songs have just basic house lighting, while others engage the full light show, effects, etc.

They also show some of the background filming, 3D filming etc that they were doing for the show. They had some firsts planned for this show. Apparently they had the largest ever LED display, and was the first time 3D could ever be used in a concert performance. On my kuro, some of this stuff looked so real, my wife commented on it. She never wants to comment on how good or real something looks!

The special features are also very enjoyable. I have not finished all of them, but they dive deeper into what was planned. The exit for MJ will blow you away. When you watch the special features, you get to see what was planned for his "Big Exit". I was floored. I won't mention it here, as it would be a spoiler.

So, if you want two hours of enjoyment, you will get it with this movie. You may also gain an additional respect for MJ, as I did. While we all know he needed money, after seeing what this concert would have been, I was thrown aback. I would have went to see this concert.

Last, in most movies, you would never really mention this, but, this may very well be the last great thing ever produced by or about MJ. It is worth every penny.

Feature Video: 1080P / 1.78:1
Extras Video: HD
Feature Audio: English 5.1 DTS-HD MA
Extras Audio: English 5.1 Dolby Digital

I agree with you but you probably could have not gone to see the concert. They were only going to be in Europe and they sold out in hours.
I thought that the concert was only going to be in Europe too, but again, the blu ray shows something else. Part of the agreement for the concerts in Europe was that Guinness World Records was to be there when he broke the record. It also eludes that he was going to have a world tour.

NEW FIRMWARE UPDATE 2.2 (April 2) WHOOP WHOOP.... Hope it works better than the last.............

Unfortunately I won't have time to update my 1400 this weekend. I am curious if it helps the Universal Studios Blu Ray movies (like Couples Retreat) problem. Glad to see Samsung is still faithful to our whiney emails!
Ok, new firmware available. Unfortunately I'm in the middle of some home renovations and have most of my home theater broken down and stored safely away for a couple weeks while flooring is replaced and walls get painted. So I'm not in a position to update right away. Who's gonna bite the bullet and give us the skinny on what this update does for us (I bet its 3D! )
I'm not doing it....give it to Mikey, Mikey will update anything!!!!
Nope, our Samsung BD-P1400 is in the bedroom where my wife occasionally plays an older movie. I've got the Oppo in the theater and it is working fine thank you. You'll have to find someone else to try out the firmware update.

who's 'mikey'? i dunno no 'mikey'.
Unlike some of you; I ain't afraid! I took the upgrade via Ethernet and did not have any problems and the player still works. I do not have any disks at home that did not work before or that have reported problems. Inglourious Basterds is the only movie that I have in my Neflix queue that has known problems with the older firmware so that will likely be my next chance to test a known issue. However, since I have had IB at #2 in my queue for weeks (since before its release), we may have to fight WWIII first before I get it along with my #1 in queue; MJ's "This Is It."

I tried to update yesterday but the DHCP wasn't working so I gave up. Might try again today.

I played i bunch of movies that were giving me problems and all loaded fine. Well let me tell my story just so you guys know what was fixed for me. First. I had my firmware on 2.0 but could not play Ghostbusters, Snow White, Bastards, Toy Story 1/2. Next. I upgraded to 2.1 to fix the problems and all the movies mentioned and all played fine, but my Universal titles would not get past the load screen. (Death Race, Drag Me to Hell, Hell Boy and more). Now. I loaded the new firmware 2.2 and all loaded as normal with no problems. This is great guys, this bad boy just doesnt stop. Now just a side question, i have Crank 2 for a like for like 3 months now and it loads fine and even plays fine till i get to chapter 4 and it freezes and jumps like 3 mins and then resumes fine for the rest of the movie. I wanted to return the thing but my brother tossed the receipt like 2 days after he got it on black friday. Is anybody having this problem too or do i have a bad disc? Sorry about the long post and hope you have the same luck i had with.

Why the reluctance on upgrading? If you have the ISO image of older FW, you can downgrade it by popping the disc in. Unlike Toshiba's HD players, you don't have to hack the date field to back rev it.
Just for the record, I am going to update. I just can't do it right away. The only "problem" disc I own is Basterds. But my wife did recently pick up Snow White. I guess there was some issue with it?
