Samsung BDP1400 Disussion Thread - Page 419

I have upgraded, and so far, so good. No issues or problems that I have noticed. I will test a few other discs to see if things load a little easier or faster. Dark Knight still takes forever.
I updated my player the other day and so far I've just watched "Leon - the professional" on the new firmware. I had a few split second freezes during the movie, is that something any of you have noticed too watching that movie?
I was stunned that my bedroom 1400 played Monsters versus Aliens last night.
I havent used it in quite a while nor have I updated the firmware since May 09 when I watched Paul Blart-Mall Cop.
just watched 'law abiding citizen', movie loaded and played flawlessly on the 1400.

this afternoon, i finally got around to opening up and trying out my cheapo $60 sylvania bd player. seems to work pretty good. loaded and played a few minutes of '2012' with no issues other than slow loading.

I had my firmware on 2.0 but could not play Ghostbusters, Snow White, Bastards, Toy Story 1/2. Next. I upgraded to 2.1 to fix the problems and all the movies mentioned and all played fine, but my Universal titles would not get past the load screen. (Death Race, Drag Me to Hell, Hell Boy and more). Now. I loaded the new firmware 2.2 and all loaded as normal with no problems. This is great guys, this bad boy just doesnt stop. Now just a side question, i have Crank 2 for a like for like 3 months now and it loads fine and even plays fine till i get to chapter 4 and it freezes and jumps like 3 mins and then resumes fine for the rest of the movie. I wanted to return the thing but my brother tossed the receipt like 2 days after he got it on black friday. Is anybody having this problem too or do i have a bad disc? Sorry about the long post and hope you have the same luck i had with.

Thanks! Great feedback on FW 2.2! Crank 2 really sounds like a disc problem and not a player problem. Kuddos to Samsung in not giving up on this old player!
I would also like to thank Samsung for still supporting our player. I just did the upgrade over the internet connection and all went well.

After about 50 blu and 100's of dvd viewings my 1400 has earned a well deserved retirement. New Oppo 83 on it's way to me now as a replacement.
Although it's a finicky machine (and what blu ray players are not?) I think I had a lot less drama with my 1400 than most folks on this thread. My living room is being remodeled so I'm taking the OPPOrtunity () to rewire and upgrade some stuff on the home theater. I have fond memories of my Sammy 1400 and this thread. Not sure what will become of the 1400. It's to flakey for me to "donate" to friends or family. So it will probably get updated to the latest firmware then become a trusty spare. I may peek in on this thread once in a while, but I'm headin' over to the Oppo discussions.
Thanks 1400, you've earned a rest!

Best wishes Jeff1967! That is so funny you just posted that, b/c yesterday I decided that I am tired of the wait time and issues with my Sammy. That, and I really want Internet streaming via my BDP. I was debating between the Oppo-83 and the PS3-Slim....and I think I will get the PS3 this week.

I have had more problems than ever with the 2.1 FW update. I have yet to try the 2.2, but hope that it helps all my problems. I too agree that I think the 1400 is too finicky to "donate" to family/friends...so it will go in the bedroom.

just got and tested my netflix copies of 'inglorious bastards' and 'gran torino'. 'gt' loaded and played for a few minutes perfectly.
'ig' got to menu, then rating screen, stopped; i had to restart, go back to menu and then to chapter one and start from there.

with that in mind, they should be ok to play when i watch for real.

still on fw 1.9. and staying there, for now.

addendum (wtf is an addendum-the word sounds, ah, dumm.)

just for giggles and grins i tried 'inglorious bastards' on my new el cheapo sylvania funai $60 bd player and after the prerequisite ~2 min load time it went right to play, no problemo.
if this sucker had at least 5.1 analog outs, the 1400 might be looking for another job.

Unfortunately that 2 minute load time churning is what seems to kill many BD Rom drives before their their time. Regardless of CEM.

I upgraded a very quirky player with the new 2.2 FW and it now plays Saw VI which it did not play before

the oppos too?
not to mention some of the 'higher priced spreads'?

i haven't been following the oppo threads lately.

With my new Oppo now in hand, I performed the "final" firmware update on the 1400 via ethernet last night. All went well and I verified dvd and blu playback.
Everything seems normal so the 1400 rides off into the sunset (storage) officially becoming my backup player.

Anyone try Avatar with the latest firmware yet?

Yep, it kinda plays. It works, technically, but at least once every 45-50 seconds the audio hiccups and the timeline pops up in the middle of the screen for 3 seconds. I couldn't take it after 30 minutes and hit stop. Maybe I'll borrow my roommate's blu-ray player later to watch it, or maybe I'll just order a new one online that isn't garbage and chuck this in the trash.

Sample of the problem @ 0:12 and 1:16 taken on my camera phone, apologies for quality.

My Alvin and the Chimpmunks 2 has the same menu pop up problem. So i guess thats a new problem with these Fox blus on the 1400.

Firmware version 2.2 loads Avatar without any problems and I have watched the first 15 minutes which plays just fine. I will watch the whole movie tomorrow.
No menu pop ups? This guy says every min it pops up. Im sure its a fox blu problem because my new Alvin had about 5-7 during the whole movie on FW2.2

Go to your Setup menu then to Display Setup and finally to Screen Message and turn it OFF. This will get rid of the popup messages.

This might have been covered earlier but, I was wondering, if your still relying on analog outs do you have to keep the 1400 set to Bitstream to get the HD audio or has one of the latest FW updates fixed that little bug? I know the manual says set it to PCM but, someone on here said you had to set it to bitstream because of a bug in the player.
Before someone says it...I know I need to upgrade my audio equipment to HDMI. I'm just waiting for all of the 3D hoopla to settle down before updating everything.

It didn't happen for me for the first 10+ minutes. Could you skip to chapter 5 and watch for a few minutes there when you get a chance? It actually happens for me at the exact same spot (right as Jake is about to get into the Avatar link pod) every time.

If it doesn't happen for you at all maybe I'll try exchanging the disc.

Also I tried this, did nothing for Avatar timeline popups, they still happen.

After my wife watched Avatar on the 1500 without any problems, I loaded it back into the 1400 and the timeline popups are there.

I will go to chapter 5 this evening and see what happens.

I just played the entire Avatar BD with no problems. I checked the scene you refer to several times, but had no problem. I have used the 1400 very little since i got the Oppo 83, and had not upgraded to the latest FW. I am using 2.1. You might try reinstalling that and give it a go.

The disk has a great resume menu which worked like a charm even after powered down on the Oppo. On the 1400 the resume menu comes up (eventually), but selecting it jumps past the credits at the end to the THX thinga-ma-jiggy.

I just checked chapter 5 and the menu pops up alot. Like almost every 30secs. But yesterday when i checked to see if the movie loaded i saw the first 5 mins and nothing like that happened.

I downloaded and installed FW 2.2. With it I have the same problems you experinced. It does not happen in the 1st scene, but by the 3rd it is happening very frequently. I was also experiencing numerous short audio dropouts with this FW.

I reinstalled 2.1 and everything is fine again.

Damn it sounds like im gonna go back to FW2.1. But i cant play any Universal titles on that firmware, and if i drop it to 2.0 i will be able to play the Universal titles but not newer Disney ones. Man this sucks, i was so hyped that the 2.2 fixed all those problems but now its having issues with new Fox titles.

Ya know "if" the the Samsung loaded FW as fast as the Oppo via USB (which takes seconds) it would not be quite such an issue . However that is not the case as you are aware.

Note ... I'm not saying this as an Oppo fanboy - just noting the facts,

Steve

Thanks dsok I just downgraded and it works fine, menu popups gone. I'll spread the word.

I had 2 1400's and 1 1500. The 1500 bit the dust just after the Square Trade warranty set in. The first 1400 bit the dust a month ago and Square Trade covered that too. Great service from them. The 2nd 1400 I just sold for $60. I had way too many glitches with all three machines to ever go back to Samsung. I'm not against the company...I own 2 color laser printers, a 46" lcd tv, a hd camcorder and a few other of their products. The problem is...they should have never entered the blu ray player market...even though they were first.
I now have 2 Panasonic DMP-BD 85's and so far lovin' them...zero issues so far!
Before leaving this forum I just wanted to say thanks to everyone for your help over the years. I miss Barney, too!
