1) Regardless of the movie, BD or SD, the picture does not fill up my tv. I have read where members complain of sd's having this technicality but not bd.

2) Every movie I have played gives me video and audio glitches and 80% of the discs have just stopped playing for no reason.

I have the system connected using a Monster Cable 700 series HDMI. I have not changed any internal settings nor have I done any fw updates. I thought this player auto detected my tv settings and if it doesn't, will changing the oputput to 720P internally help. Furthermore, the only way I can get the movie to fill my screen is by changing the aspect rati on the tv to 4:3 Zoom but then my deaf wife can't read the closed captioning.

Thanks a million,

1) Theatrical movies are shot in two aspect ratios: 2:35 and 1:85. Between one-half and two-thirds are the former, which even on a widescreen TV will give you small bars on the top and bottom of the screen to preserve the original framing of the picture; 1:85 films will fill a widescreen TV fully. It's really not such a bad thing. On old squareish TV's you'll have bars with both types of movies.

2) Many people on this thread, including myself, have reported drop-outs and related glitches of the kind you're getting, but not as frequently. The firmware updgrade may help, but the current version may not remove them altogether. That may take the next version, yet to be offered.

I have had no real problems with mine which I updated to current firmware. I am using it in bit stream mode to my Denon 3808i. I go find it very sensitive to dirt on the blue ray and more so than the PS I used previously or the Panny 10. These all played flawlessly once I cleaned my disc. I would seewhat players suit your needs and see it there may be a different alternative. I would only trade mine in on a Panny 30 or a playstation and for me with Denon the Panny would be my choice. I am keeping mine until there are bd live players that do all i want at a good price. I would update and see. I think with the players it does depend if you get a good one or not. I am not blown away by the quality control or the various ones.

Thanks Silber & Paloflex....

I think I might go get the Panny. Reading this forum it sounds like there are two different manufacturing plants. One that produces decent builds and one w/ multiple glitches.

As far as the aspect ratio...I thought my selecting zoom, fill or just it would fill the 16x9 aspect but neither of these three do.

that's irritating as can be.

Strick-9,

1. If the movie is not filling up the top and bottom of your screen, ie. bars on the top and bottom, then this is most likely normal, as movies are often filmed in an aspect ratio wider than a 16:9 TV. If you look at the back of the case, it usually has the aspect ratio on it. If it's 2.35:1 or 2.40:1 then you will have the black bars. If it's 1.85:1, it should fill your screen fully, as this aspect ratio approximates a 16:9 widescreen TV.

2. Try updating the firmware to see if this fixes your playback problems. If not, don't hesitate to return it to the store. You can upgrade the firmware by either the ethernet connection or burning the image to a CD-R and putting it in the player.

Also, I would set the resolution for your TV in the setup menu.

Quick question as I'm looking to buy this player and I admit, I'm clueless about BD players as I'm an HD DVD guy. Does this player bitstream out all the HD audio codes like DTS Master and TrueHD?
Yes it does if you have an HDMI 1.3 equipped receiver that can decode them. Just set the Digital Out to Bitstream.

Thanks for the info. I have and Onkyo 605 to go along with my Toshiba A35 HD DVD player and really like the ability to send out bitstream. Plus being a pro Sammy guy, I may make this the player to add to my system.

I just picked up this player yesterday and have an audio question. Since I am using 5.1 analog out to my receiver, does it matter weather the digital audio option in the player setup is set to Bitstream vs PCM? Or would this setting only be signifigant if I were using hdmi for audio?

Set to PCM for use with the 5.1 analog connections.

Help needed. I can not select Movie Frame (24Fs) via BD-1400 Samsung Blu-Ray DVD player. The screen goes blank, then Sansung blue screen. What am I doing wrong? Any/all suggestions are welcomed.

My suggestion would be to turn it off as it doesn't work properly to begin with.

What television are you using? Are you connecting directly to the TV or via a receiver?

Yes, 1.2 installed in my 1400.
In The Simpsons Movie, the audio drops up all the time, in DTS MA, Spanish...

Every couple of discs it may "stutter" on a BD for a second, but no real issue to me. SD DVD has played flawlessly to date.

Do your SD DVD's have bars top and bottom, ie: do not fill the screen?.

Hello there!

I just bought this player a few days ago here in Lisbon, Portugal, for around 500 Euros - thats over 700 USD. It was being advertised as something really cheap (for us in Europe), and I agreed it was cheap until I came to the Net and read a few of your messages... Well, too late now. I'm happy with the picture quality, so far. The European edition of Kubrick's "The Shining" (I hooked the player to my Sony rear-projector TV) was quite a magical moment. I coud finally see the difference between interpolated Hi-Definition and the real thing. It takes half a minute to load a disk, but I can live with that.

But I cannot live with a player that does not play disks from other regions. The main reason why I chose a Samsung player and not Sony or Pioneer is that they were always so easy to hack. In a matter of minutes I could unlock it with the remote and be able to play imported region 1 disks. Is there any hack available for that? And what if I buy Blu-Ray disks from America? Will I be able to play the disks? Can any of you help me withthis matter?

I also didn't like the fact that the player cannot handle DIVX material.

On the other hand, it's fun to read about TV sets that "upconvert" to Hi-Def (or separate receivers to do the job). We've never seen any of that in Europe. Strangely, we have this weird idea that our technology down here was always superior to the one found in the US.

Regards
Milan

Should I be using a CD-R instead? The brand I have is Memorex...

Use this program to burn it. IMGBURN. Do a search on google. It worked fine for me first try after having problems with it.

I got the 1400 for Christmas and have watched three movies all of them are jerky though the hole movie I have installed the newest firmware is there another fix this is nerve racking as my A35 plays with no problems. I am playing it at 1080p/24fps on my Panny 2000u.

How long does the Firmware update take to download through the Ethernet port?
I just picked up this player and the picture & sound quality are fantastic.

I do have a big concern though - are we always going to have to worry about our new movies being able to be played correctly-or at all-or will say the fix for Die Hard also help fix future movies?

Will we need new updates for new releases that have 1.1, 1.2 features...etc?

Are these fixes unique to each movie or can we hope to one day have a stable player regardless of "special features...etc" on each DVD?

I did two, back-to-back, and it took about 35-40 minutes tops.

I was finally able to figure out a way to hook up the player to my modem and the firmware is currently updating... So far it has been about 15 minutes...

Hopefully this will fix my problem and allow the audio to be passed correctly..

For me it took ~90mins for both updates one by one. You have to be patient and keep on doing other things while keep an eye on this update process, once you are done then you are all set.

The firmware upgrade fixed the audio issue and now it is passing the True-HD when I put in We Are Marshall and Superbad.

Then I tried Die Hard 4 and it locked the player up....

Is their something else I can do to fix that problem?

Also, should I leave the 24FPS in "ON" or "OFF"??

I am considering taking this back to HH Gregg and asking for a new unit or a credit towards another brand if I can not get this fixed....

As has been mentioned at least 50 times in this thread (I really wish people would utilize the search feature of this thread, as the same two things get brought up every day), there is a problem with the 24fps function with the latest firmware. It is expected to be fixed with the next firmware update (now 1 day overdue). You can either turn 24fps off or you can revert to fw 1.1 or 1.0. This will remove the stutter, but may expose you to the disc issues that fw 1.1 and 1.2 were designed to fix.

To new posters: Please, please, please consider using the "search thread" feature before posting your problem. It works pretty well. This player has been out for months now and you can be assured that most of the problems you are experiencing have been experienced before. I know this thread (and player) may be brand new to you, but it gets really old to see the same two questions (24fps stutter and bitstream vs pcm) posted daily (sometimes multiple times/day). Thanks for listening...

Amen to that, brotha!

One thing worth mentioning. If you've burned the latest FW on CD-R, then all previous versions are included.

If you do it via ethernet, then each FW is processed in +1 step. Meaning you would do 1.1, then 1.2, ect...

Probably can save some time with CD. Not to say one is better than the other..

What the 1400 is trying to tell you is, "If you see a blank screen when trying to set the 24 fps feature to 'ON', by me testing your TV, your TV does not support 24 fps. So it doesn't matter what you want, it is going to stay OFF. Good bye and good luck. I'll show my perty Samsung screen next."

Also 24 fps is only available with HDMI...

Man, i don't think there's a brave soul in the US that will answer that. Homeland Security is very tight these days. although some rumors (actually confirmed now) about some Euro nation has the crack, but you didn't hear that from me, OK?

Good news is there are some boomoos with all three regions in them. I think RE: Extinction may had all 3 regions (or region free). Again, that's what I thought I saw. So hopefully more like these to come for folks outside the US. Me, don't really give a flying fluke. Bad, Barney! Sorry I'm not sensitive...

Fellow future Purple Nation Movement brotha, yes the 1400 will bitstream all present codecs, including MA and TrueDat, via HDMI 1.3a or later and if your receiver can decode them. Bitstream TrueHD and 7.1 DTS-HD Master Audio rocked the house!
