yeah i actually was playing it on my 27" WEGA HD CRT with an old HTIB system. i can't even imagine how good it'll look and sound on a 50" Pio with my new Onkyo system.

I watched cars on my system early this morning. Couldn't sleep so I fell asleep to it. 128" of goodness. But my sound system is the real killer. Martin Logan Monilths III for my mains and with 1600 watts of power for them.

I hadn't had any audio or video dropouts until yesterday. I upgraded to version 1.7, then played Spiderman 2.1 and had both audio and video dropouts at the scene where Mary Jane is talking with her friend about accepting the marriage proposal from Jamesons son. I hadn't watched this movie prior to updating the firmware, so can't say if the problem would have been there before or not, just noting that the problem occurred while using this version of firmware. It dropped for several seconds. It wasn't a significant scene in the movie, so I didn't bother to go back and see if it would repeat or not.

What is your video chain like. From player to tv/FP?

Well, just to have a whinge - i sent Samsung Australia an email asking why our latest firmware release is only 1.5, when you guys in the USA have had 1.6 and 1.7. Their response was simply that Samsung Support doesnt have any control over firmware. Fair enough they might not, but they could have at least put me on to someone who does!

I also mentioned the 5 minute pause going to stop situation and apart from suggesting that there is a problem with my player and i should send it in (funny how EVERY 1400 owner has this situation - so obviously it is not a "problem" with my player) they were no help there either... i wanted them to pass through the request/suggestion that this should be made to be user configurable.

So i decided i would try to install the USA 1.7 update, but that didnt get very far at all... a few seconds after inserting the CD-R it spat it out and said "there is a problem with the upgrade data". So obviously the firmware releases are targetted to individual countries/regions players... apart from some possible binary/hex editing (if i knew where to do it) we Aussies will be stuck until we get a new local firmware. It sucks because previuosly the 1.2, 1.5 versoins etc came out prety quickly after the US versions... but 1.6 has been out since Feb, and now 1.7 is out as well. Admittedly i havent had any issues with any discs yet, but that's mainly because we get screwed over on release dates over here as well, and alot of the new movies you guys talk about haven't been released here yet

No video or audio problem playing The Golden Compass with the 1400! PQ and 7.1 Master Audio were excellent. No stutter, no seamless branching BS, no nothing. Watching the faux Non-Profile 1.1 PiP extra feature with the film now. Although just regular DTS. Definitely a must have for film collectors.

On FW 1.7 @ 1080p/24 fps Off - Bitstream Audio.

Loading Time Info:
27 seconds to the New Line Logo screen
16 seconds to the Main Menu animation screen
05 seconds to the Main Menu option selection screen

48 seconds total (I've double checked the math )

How you like that, Larry, buddy!

FWIW, 1.6 and 1.7 didn't do much. Maybe they're waiting on fixing y'alls Aussie models to be Profile 1.1 compliant... Maybe not... Mahhahhahahaaha!

I feel ya, buddy. Hey for a self addressed envelope and stamp, I buy you the USava model and some Region A BD's (newly released an all) and send it you if you want? Let me know, brotha from downunda!

Nahh, movies like Cars are much appreciated by a 500 watt Bash amp pushing some Outlaw Audio LFM!

I consider myself somewhat of a film collector, but I saw "The Golden Compass" at the theater and didn't like the movie enough to want to see it again much less buy it.

This is totally side tracking from the 1.7 topic.....but after we started talking about MA audio, it hit a sore spot. I am sick of getting these Blu Ray Discs that have regular Dobly Digital (EXACT SAME AS DVD). I have only heard 2 discs that were not DVD audio quality (Spider Man and Sunshine). I just bought House of Flying Daggers and the PQ and SQ is the exact same as DVD. Can someone please recommend some TruHD or MA BDs that are worth buying. Again, i don't want to get off topic but I just want some quick advice. Thanks for listening to me PMS.

HAHA....Doh!! That is an awesome thread. I wish I knew that was there before I bought the dead beat BDs. It is sad that AVSFORUMs had a few of the movies in the MUST HAVE BD list on the worst Tier of this classification system. Lesson Learned. Thank you kind sir

You gots to at least rent it buddy. The video and 7.1 audio are way better than when I saw it at the theaters. Try it, you'll probably be a born again!

Last time I've felt this way was for the official release of AVP: R. And you know how that turned out.

Smarty-pants, you probably wouldn't appreaciate some of the grainy scenes from what I remembered at the theater on your 90ft 5-story 1080i screen! I know this is one of those disc susceptible to the DTS MA Bitstream Bomb.

I know this may sound silly but here it goes......
What happens to a 7.1 DTS-HD Master Audio track, if all you (I) have is a 5.1 set up?
I am not bitstreaming, so I realize I don't get the DTS MA anyway.
But, assume for a second, that the 1400 did internally decode this DTS MA, what happens as I send the multi channel PCM signal to my Integra (HDMI 1.1) receiver?
Does the track just play without the 2 missing surround backs?
Or do the 2 missing surround backs get mixed in with the surround side channels on a 5.1 set up?

Can someone explain this to me?

Thanks

Paul
I know that with DD and DTS standards, that the 2 missing speakers will get "mixed in", but I am not positive about what happens with "hi-res" audio codes like HD/MA.

Just wondering if this player is worth picking up as a intial entry level into Bluray? I plan on getting a profile 2.0 player at Christmas time(if they are available) but want something to hold me over until then.

I have read some of the concerns but for the most part seems like an overall decent player.

If you had to choose again, would you choose this player or another?

I just got mine a couple months ago. There have been some glitches here and there, but that is the case with ALL br players. I am very satified with my purchase and yes, I'd buy this player again.

As an entry-level BluRay player that could be purchased at a real bargain is the only way I'd recommend the Samsung BD P1400. It's just too plagued with playback issues such as freeze-ups, skips, etc., etc., that even five or six firmware upgrades have still not completely solved. That said, it does produce a nice picture when it does play properly, so again, if you can get a real good deal and then plan on selling or otherwise disposing of it in order to buy a newer generation player from a better manufacturer later on, I'd say go for it. You may even get lucky with a relatively kink-free unit.
Like I said, I've only had my 1400 for a couple months, but after playing at least 20 different discs, I have NEVER had my player "freeze up". A couple of times, I've had a glitch in the picture and/or sound that would last for about 1 second or even less.
One thing seems to guaranteed, these players vary in build quality from unit to unit. This is what makes players like these so "difficult". One player may exibit a problem, but not another. So it's not ALL firmware related. This is what gave me confidence in buying mine as a refurbished unit. I figured that whatever problem(s) it had, they should be fixed now... and I haven't had any (major) problems.

Well realistically I am going to be out $50 cash out of pocket for the player. I had received some items that were returned to Best Buy for store credit9and I cannot stand BB) so I am trading GC plus $50 cash for the player
post #6570 of 12876
Well, then it just comes down to your personal budget considerations. However, you may very well get many months of relative satisfaction from it.
