Samsung BDP1400 Disussion Thread - Page 225

ScareCrow, they don't listen, do they?

nrc2112, here is the link Smarty-pants and Scarecrow are alluding to. If my memory serves me, the DSP update instruction is different for the 605 than the other Onkyos. Something about pressing the Tone + button twice? and the "CD" button instead of the "Return" button to show the DSP versions?

After my 3 DSP updates for my 805, I have not experience the DTS bomb with The Golden Compass nor other identified problem discs. Yet...

As a matter of fact, I am rewatching AVP: R again and looking into this seamless branching BS.

The A2 sends a 1080i signal, which is much easier to pass over HDMI.

If HDCP handshakes or BD+ verification fails, you will lose your whole (audio plus video) signal until it can be re-established. The length and type of audio connection is immaterial.

If you need to run 50' of HDMI, you might look into an active system. Even though one of your 1400s is working fine right now, I'm not sure that will last too much longer. Just something to consider.

Thanks for the info. Is there any way to make the 1400 output 1080i instead of 1080p?

ya.... go to menu when you first start up the 1400 without a disk then go to like display or sometin like that....just look through the sub-menus...youll eventually get it......

I bought a Blue-Ray concert disc and while playing it, the picture would occasionally freeze, or stutter, and the audio would often drop out. The disc looked perfect when I examined it. I put it back in, with the same result. Then I played another disc that had played perfectly before, with more audio drop outs.

But the interesting this is....it then played a regular DVD perfectly! (I assume this is because the Blu-Ray playback requires more precision than DVD.)

Does anyone have any suggestions, other than the obvious one of sending the player back for repair?

Thanks.

Read back through this thread. Scores of people, multiplied ten-fold by the much larger group of consumers who don't post on forums such as this, have reported the same problems. Samsung has tried to address the problems by a series of firmware updates (now on 1.7), but the problems have only been reduced, not eliminated. What firmware does your player have?
I don't know what firmware my player has. How do I find it?

With my Toshiba HD DVD players, Toshiba would send me update CD-R's. Does Samsung do this? I am only moderately computer "literate" and would have no idea how to download updates using my computer. I guess I'll have to call Samsung and find out where my nearest authorized service center is.

This is very disappointing for the "winning" format, don't you think?

go to settings, it's in there. firmware version.

Samsung will do the same thing if you ask them. Where do you got the idea that they wouldn't?

rveras,

Re-read my post. I asked "Does Samsung do this?" I never said that I assumed that they wouldn't.

I just got off the phone with Samsung's service department. The lady was very nice and said that they would be sending me an update disc to firmware version 1.7, and that I should receive it in 7-14 working days from UPS.

Thanks to all of you for your responses.
we can get you the firmware to burn to disc right now if you like.
briansemerick,

Thank you very much for your offer, but I am pretty computer illiterate, and would not even know how to do this with my computer. I know just enough to read my favorite forums and make an ocassional post.

I'm just happy that Samsung is sending me my update disc. I can wait, I've got a library of over 500 DVD's that I can dip into!

When you get it, put it in your computer before loading it in the player to make sure it's Version 1.7. On three occasions after requesting the latest firmware update, they sent me Version 1.5. I finally got an Ethernet powerline adapter and now download the updates from the network myself. Bottom line: don't count on Samsung customer service to be any better at filling such requests properly than they are at making BluRay players that work correctly.
agree, if you can hook your samsung up to the net through a router with an ethernet cable you can auto update easily. but if you're PC illiterate you may not have a router anyway
post #6733 of 12876
You don't even need a router. I have a single cable modem right now, and what I usually do is just unplug the ethernet cable that goes from my modem to my PC, then just plug in the ethernet cable from my 1400 to my modem. Of course you have to go in and setup DHCP and DNS in the 1400 menus, but after that, it's pretty easy.
sorry duh, that's true.
When did v1.7 FW come out? Does Samsung have an email update to let us know when new FW become available? It would also be nice if they put release notes on the site so we could see what they are fixing, adding, etc.

I know these are ridiculous and unreasonable requests...

WELCOME to AVS bk898 !!!
Staying subscribed to this thread will let you know when new fw updates are available. 1.7 came out last week. Don't count on SS for too much, since they pretty much suck. At least they ARE doing some fw updates though, and no, we never know what they may fix other than via trial and error of our own experiences.
that makes sense. I bought the 1400 a little over a week ago and was certain v1.6 was the only option. I just looked today and saw 1.7. It blew my mind.

thanks for keeping me up to date...

Can this player do this: Can I set a default type audio output as my first, second and thrid choices? I would like for PCM to be first then DDTHD, then DTS-MA and then DTS and DD. I would output via the analog outputs and this would be easier for the wife and family.

The "bomb" problem is different, and is caused by the DSP in your receiver. Check your firmware verisons - If your DSP version is not 08214A then you DO require the DSP update. Since you experienced "the bomb" i can guarantee you that your DSP is not up to date.

To check firmware version press DISPLAY and STANDBY together (on the receiver, not on the remote) this will show your MAIN firmware, then quickly press the Tone -/+ buttons to cycle through other firmware versions, such as the DSP

I loaded my serial number of my 605 to the ONKYO site and it states that not firmware is needed as you stated earlier.

when I hit display and standby the only thing that happens it that the receiver turns off then on.

figured it out - I do need DSP update - I looked at the instructions and forget it - I am too busy to jump through all this business - something should be more transparent to the user if anyone has a 605 and an easier install instruction set please advise.

The only advice that can be given, is to learn how to do the update yourself, or contact Onkyo and schedule a service appointment to have a professional do the update under warranty... or, if you have a friend that is savy at this type of stuff, ask them for help.

No. It's just like regular dvd players. You have to go into the the DVD MENU when playing the disc and then select which soundtrack you want from what is available on each particular disc. I don't know of any dvd player or HD player that will do what you are asking. Some players you can chose to default eith DTS or DD, but that's all I've ever seen to date.

Also, the only way to hear DTS-HD/MA, with the 1400, is to bitstream to a receiver that has that audio decoder built in, then have the receiver decode the DTS-HD/MA soundtrack. The 1400 will not decode it internally.

This is as easy as I can put it.

These are the steps I used to update my 605 using my BD30.
All button presses are using the units front panel, not the remote.

*I firsted noted my settings on the 605 since this will put all settings back to default.

1. Used Nero Express to burn the file as an Audio CD at 16x speed and verified data after burn.

2. Went through the 605 menu to make the CD input OPT1, which is the 1st optical input, which is the connection I used between the BD30 and 605.

3. After the 605 was powered on, pressed:
a.)DISPLAY then STANDBY simultaneously, which displays the FW version.
The FW version will disappear from the display in about 3 seconds.
*You can repeat this step at anytime when the unit is powered on.

b.) As soon as the FW version is displayed, quickly press the '+" button twice to display the DSP version.
The DSP version will be displayed for about 3 seconds then disappear.

c.) As soon as the DSP version is displayed, quickly press the 'CD' button and 'SPIF/Update...' (or something simuliar)should be displayed with the periods scrolling from left to right.

At this point, the 605 will wait for a while for the update file on the OPT1 input.
I 1st tried using an old Samsung DVD/CD player and it wouldn't play the file, then after a few minutes of trying, I gave a try with my BD30 as the 605 was still displaying 'Update...'

Soon as the BD30 loaded the disc and I pressed play, the 605 displayed changed to 'Writing' within a few seconds.
Then less then 60 seconds, the 605 displayed 'Complete' and the unit turned off.

WELCOME TO THE onkyo firmware update thread.
I mean where else would you look.
I think I'll check over at the Onkyo thread to see what's going on with this new 1.7 firmware on the SS BD-P1400!
Later..........

I checked it out and...........nothing about the 1.7 firmware in the Onkyo thread, only crap about Onkyo!!

Go Figure??!!

you guys are great!

Thanks for the help! I just hope that I do not ruin this AVR

Remote Control issues. I purchased the 1400 refurbished and after the firmware update I'm loving it. However I was given a faulty remote! Does anyone know of a quick fix universal (cheap) that works w/ the 1400, until I've got enough to throw down for a nice one? Or anywhere I can purchase another 1400 remote? Or any suggestions how I can fix this one? Thanks for your help?
Didn't experienced any video or audio problem watching Walk Hard with the 1400. Watched the theatrical version and did NOT run into the seamless branching BS. The 5.1 TrueHD track was very warm and "room filling" in the musical scenes. Tho I am glad I rented this cause there are waaay too many man's frontal shots for Barney to withstand . Even downing some long necks Coronas in my mini cinko of May celebration didn't help! Also as a constant reminder that the 1400 is a dinosaur (like Barney ), when I tried to activate the "BD Live" extra feature menu option, it says "Oh hell no, your 1400 isn't profile 1.1 compliant... nice try, big dummy!" There goes that big idea.

Holymoly! if you stop playback or even EJECTED the disc or even TURNING THE 1400 OFF and reload the movie, a screen comes up and ask you,

"Would you like to resume watching the feature where you left off? Yes or No?"

HolyCow! Barney's kiddin y'all not. Is this the first implementation of BD-J Resume Play? It reloaded the TrueHD track and the subtitle being on too. I am tickled to death and no one else has noticed this before?!

ADDED: Even when watching the extended version, it reloaded the correct version. The red guitar pick icon comes up where the scenes are cut out from the theatrical version.

On FW 1.7 @ 1080p/24 fps off - bitstream audio.

Loading Time Info:

52 seconds to the guitar pick loading icon
43 seconds to finish the guitar pick loading icon
05 seconds to the Main Menu
---
1:40 seconds total loading time (As always, I've double checked the math )

Any comments on this amazing discovery???

For those of you who have upgraded to 1.7 FW - what is your opinion to improvement or lack of with regard to the change? I have read thru the last several pages of the forum and not much pro or con about the upgrade.

Usefull post & informative.
Glad you can help out AVS members who requires help.
Yes, we could all just be lazy and direct him to the Onkyo thread or be a little kind and give them the info they need in this thread.
One post to answer/ask a question does not kill a thread.

Thanks for being an asset to AVS.

First thing I noticed with Golden Compass was that when I paused play for about 15 minutes, it picked right up where it left off when I pressed play to resume. I haven't checked any other BDs to confirm if this a global fix. The pause & shutdown was my last gripe with the 1400. If it is truly fixed for all disks, I'm a very happy fellow.
