yea, I remember it now. BA is like The Punisher for Travolta. I wanna give those two a rent. Haven't seen these in years. Stay tuned ... Same bat channel... same bat time .

TWBB was a stupid movie ... agreed, the Daneil Lewis guy is much better in Gangs of New York, as the ruthless Irishman killa!

speaking of TWBB, member Benny from The Mummy? We'll he was in TWBB. oh yea, that's ol' Benny.

Same here, and also Spiderwick Chronicles with the kids. OTOH, the Other Boleyn Girl dropped out video and audio for about 4 seconds; twice.

Seems I'm still getting many more glitches than I should. And my unit was new from Amazon (not refurb) 12/31/2007, I have FW 1.8, and I have the Maxell DVD cleaner disc the Purple One tipped us off to a little while ago. I don't know what to do next, except open her up and operate.

John Travolta (bad guy) and Christian Slayter (good guy). I liked it because it was action packed the whole time.

Magmatic,
I was getting those dropouts every once in a while. I tried different things, even opening it up to clean the lens and grease the rails.

Now I don't know if there's anything too this, or maybe I've just hit a string of good luck...
I now turn on my display FIRST (front projector). I let it warm up for a good minute or so. Then I power on the receiver, giving it a minute as well. Then I power on the 1400, with the power button ONLY. I give it a minute to cycle on a warm up... THEN I open the tray and put the BR disc in.

Since I have been doing that routine, I have watched 8-10 BR discs with no problems or dropouts what-so-ever.
I also make sure that the HDMI cable on the back is nice and securely pushed in and squared up as best as possible.

Good luck

THE BUCKET LIST

"We live. We die. And the wheels on the bus go round and round... If I'm wrong, I win."

CASE COVER

MOVIE IN A NUTSHELL SUMMARY
After befriending each other in the same hospital and receiving the same prognosis of having less than a year to live, Edward (Jack Nicholson) the billionaire and Carter (Morgan Freeman) your average mechanic make a list of things they want to do before the kick the bucket, "the bucket list", and only till they have crossed out all that are on that list have they found true peace with themselves, joy to those who are around them, and most importantly eternal friendship.

OTHER MOVIE COMPARISON
Shankshaw Redemption meets Life (Martin Lawrence)

BARNEY'S BOOMOO RATING

Movie Destined to be a Classic
Video @ 1080p/24fps Off
Audio * 5.1 Dolby Digital

Center Channel Dialog Clarity
Balanced Surround Sound Volume
Surround Sound Detail and Dynamics
Low Frequency Effects

Wow what an inspirational movie. The 2 and half paws audio rating is by no means a negative effect of this movie. Giving the type of movie it is, the 5.1 DD track is appropriate. Video is very good.

* Bitstreamed to Onkyo 805 | Nite Listen Mode: Auto | Re-EQ: Off

1400 TECHNICAL DATA

Video Problem: No
Audio Problem: No
Load Problem: Yes *
Total Loading Time: 2 min 16 sec
Skip Previews "Shortcut" Works: No
Resume Play Works: No
Annoying Menu Button Sound or Option: Yes **
Main Menu or Popup Menu GUI Intensity Rating: Simple [Moderate] *** Complex
Dynamic Compression: Off
FW: 1.8

* First time loaded fine. Second and third did not load. Took the disc out, wipe it clean, turn off and on the 1400, and the load just fine after that. I think it's the combination of cleaning the disc and resetting the persistent memory for the bookmarking feature? that fixed the loading problem.
** Menu button sound is only audible in stereo mode.
*** Slow menu animation updating noticed.

EXTRA FEATURES WORTH NOTING

1) Bookmark Feature - Hidden in the Scene Selection menu option is the bookmark feature. Use this for the resume play problem and the short 5 min pause to stop bs problem with the 1400.

2) Bucket List Trivial Track - Option to turn this feature On or Off. If On, then popups in a form of a sticky note about the scene appears during the movie. Recommend turning this feature on after you have watched it the first time. Can get a little bit distracting. Does not required BD Profile 1.1 or greater players.

3) Behind the Story - Interview with the Director, Jack Nicholson, and Morgan Freeman.

4) Music Video and the Making of "Say" by John Mayer - Definitely will change the way you think about this song after watching the movie and his commentary. Highly recommend in giving this beautiful song a listen. Makes the total movie experience unforgettable. Such a beautiful song and a strong message relative to the movie.

You're not going to get big explosions LFE or active surrounds with The Bucket List, but the movie itself is very inspirational, especially for older folks. The regular 5.1 Dolby Digital track is therefore appropriate for this kind of movie. Kinda like Shankshaw Redemption, the movie will offer you some hope and inspiration in humanity. Very deep in the message that this movies delivers. Definitely a highly recommend in adding this gem to your boomoo collection, no brainer .

I just finished watching "The Signal". It wasn't too bad for an indie flick made on a 50K budget with mostly first time actors. I picked it up because it's never in stock at my local Blockbuster, so when I saw it in stock late last night as I was returning "The Devil Wears Prada", I figured I'd give it a shot. Would I buy it - no, but its an ok rental for 1:45. The three different sections of the movie were directed by 3 different people, and even though it's one story, I think that's why it sort of jumps from being a thriller to dark comedy to horror and back. Definitely do a little reading on this one before you pick it up - not really a blind buy or blind rental. Pic and audio quality is pretty good for such a low budget film.

THE SCORPION KING

"If I'm no king, why are you on your knees before me?"

CASE COVER

MOVIE IN A NUTSHELL SUMMARY
Before the time of the Pyramids (pre The Mummy and The Mummy Returns ) , King Memnon, with the help of his beautiful sorceress (Kelly Hu, hot! ) and his vast army, only has an Akkadian assassin Mathayus (The Rock, later on the rise to be The Scorpion King by ancient laws of defeating another king) and a small group of resistance to defeat and complete his total conquest.

OTHER MOVIE COMPARISON
Conan the Barbarian meets The Chronicles of Riddick and a little bit of Troy

BARNEY'S BOOMOO RATING FOR HOME THEATER EXPERIENCE

Movie Entertaining Action Flick

AUDIO SUB-CATEGORY
Center Channel Dialog Clarity
Balanced Surround Sound Volume

Entertaining action flick. Video for dark scenes, with fire as a lighting source, the red and orange skin tone were very, too saturated in color. Excellent audio.

Audio 5.1 Dolby Digital Plus *
Subtitle Legibility **

AUDIO SUB-CATEGORY
Center Channel Dialog Clarity
Balanced Surround Sound Volume
Surround Sound Detail
Surround Sound Dynamics (Bass, Treble, and Separation)
Low Frequency Effects

Entertaining action flick. Overly done red saturation for skin tone in dark scenes with fire as the lighting source, the A35 and HD DVD version did a better job. Excellent audio.

* Bitstreamed to Onkyo 805 | Nite Listen Mode: Auto (NA) | Re-EQ: Off

* I suspect the 1400 has problems with BD's which uses the internal persistent memory to store data, such as My Scene bookmarks. First load was not a problem. It's the ones after that. I was able to reload successfully by first ejecting the disc tray and taking the disc out. Then turn off the unit. Turn it back on. Wait till the 1400 gives you the "No Disc" message. I believe at this point, whatever is stored in the persistent memory is cleared. Pop in the disc and loads just fine like the first time.

** Found under Setup, "Button Sound" can be turned OFF or ON. Not audible in bitstream mode, only stereo PCM.
*** Not a significant hesitation in remote response and menu navigation due to the menu animation.

EXTRA FEATURES WORTH NOTING

1) U-Control PiP - Requires a BD Profile 1.1 player. IOW, forrrgeetttt about it!

2) My Scenes - Bookmark feature that may use the 1400 (and A35) internal 64k (256k? for A35) persistent memory to store bookmarks. Like a A-B Repeat feature on the remote?

Again if you already have this in DVD or HD DVD combo format, it's a tough call to decide whether you wanna buy it or not.

The story of the Scorpion King is a welcome addition and spinoff of The Mummy series. Good old fashion fun action flick. Get this on BD if you don't have the HD DVD combo version.

THE VS. A35 NOTE
I've used the 5th chapter, "Betrayed", to test both units handling of the red crush dark scenes. Although IMHO both the BD and HD DVD versions display dark scenes where the light source is some form of fire, the red and orange skin tone hue was overly saturated. The HD DVD/A35 combo did do a better job at taming this out of control coloring. The HD DVD version beats the BD version by half a paw because of this. Both versions scored very good in HD PQ.

Surprisingly I preferred the HD DVD 5.1 Dolby Digital Plus track over the BD 5.1 DTS-HD Master Audio track. I thought it had more dynamics ("excitement" and range), a more center channel dialog presence, and a more balanced surround sound volume throughout. More appropriate for the average home theater audio experience, again IMHO. That's not to say the 5.1 Master Audio track was a slouch. Both audio tracks are solid and a well deserved "Excellent" rating.

It is hard to entertain the idea of getting the BD version of The Scorpion King if you have the Combo Format version in HD DVD/DVD. Now if Universal threw in a second disc, a SD digital copy, like Lionsgate did with The Bank Job, then it becomes... a fair fight and gets interesting .

btw, my red blood brothas, it wasn't a total sweep. So 1 out of 3 aint too bad .

I think it's a good idea for all 1400 owners to share what joy or pain their 1400 has brought them. Some are technical info, and other just opinion. The good thing is we can all discuss them as 1400 owners .

Man you really love TSK don't you Barn?
Maybe I was in a bad mood when I watched it way back when. I'll have to give it another viewing just to see. It'll have to be in SD though ... for now .

aww man, OT... just watching Balls of Fury in HD DVD Combo version...

Can't wait to review this on BD! One of the most memorable quote is;

"It is better to die like a tiger, than live like a pussy [cat ofcourse]."

mood had a lot to do with it. How well you enjoy the movie ... My sister said Batman The Dark KNight wasn't any good.

I asked why? Did her boyfriend enjoyed it?

She said, "Well he just got off work and was very tired. Fell asleep most of it."

No wonder why. You gots to at least give it a spin in BD on your 1400... while in a good mood... Kelly Hu is hotttt!

Barn, that had to be one sucky theater for someone to nod off during DK.. There are some posts over on the DrPainMD's bass thread that are calling DK the next 5 star, classic, bass movie.

that's a good point, buddy. Even though the kids at the movie were having more fun talking about him snoring than actually watching the movie, noticed the other two or three categories I added to the review.

The separation and distinction between bass from the surrounds (this is more like the dynamic range between bass and treble) and LFE from the discrete .1 channel.

Also very important, at least to me, is how well the subtitles are presented. Very critical sometimes for the home theater enviroment. Also the requirement of BD Profile 1.1 and 2.0 players to have the ability to display "highlighted" text base subtitles. This requirement I believe has been overlooked by the BDA and CE manufacturers. Swept under the carpet, as you might put it !

Has anyone had problems with the latest filmwear? I have tried many times to burn the upgrade to a CD and everytime I get a error with the disc message. I have tried nero and active ISo burner and still get the same message. Is there someone who can send me a upgrade CD that works.
Thanks in advance.

I have had the very same experience you did (never had this CD problem with previous updates). But the online update was done in reasonable time and without a glitch.

Your reviews keeping getting better, Barney. It seems like with each review, you add some new information. I really appreciate the subtitle information as The Wife requires this with every movie.

BTW, I completely agree with your comments on TWBB.

FW 1.8 I have done it both ways... ahh get your mind out of the gutter and not like both of those ways.

The CD method, I've great success with Nero Express. I sometimes use Roxio, Sonic, and IMGBurn depending on the laptop or desktop I am using at the moment. All three ways ... it's easy as taking candy from a baby or it's so easy, a caveman can do it.

Let me know if you're using Nero Express or Roxio to create the image on CD, and I or someone else here can you out buddy.

I have a 60% chance of getting through a movie htese days, so maybe I should ask y'all how to program a Harmony 880 to perform the staggered and delayed turn on sequence? I'll try anything at this point.

I used to think it was the Netflix discs, but now after thoroughly cleaning each one received, and still getting glitches I felt it was more. Now days, even my own BD's may or may not play through without errors. Yes, they get cleaned too. They all look factory new when I put them in the tray.

Thanks for the suggestions to everyone, and the continued hope.

Hi Magmatic,

I am sorry you are having so many problems.

If my player was acting like your 1400, I would be tempted to do this procedure:

Also, I would try another HDMI cable (if that is what you're using) from Monoprice.com like this:

It is nice and blue and keeps the mojo the same with your BR player.

Magmatic,

What is the problem?

My 880 powers up the 1400, the TV with the proper input, the HDMI switch box, the a/v receiver, the Zektor multichannel switch box.

It is important to keep aiming the 880 in the direction of those 5 devices until all IR commands get delivered.

Picture quality as well as the 5.1 TrueHD bitstream audio was nicely done. Give it a rent for an enjoyable family viewing.

On FW 1.6 @ 1080p/24 fps off Digital Audio Output = Bitstream.

Just picked up Water Horse and it won't play for me. I get the Samsung loading screen, but after that it does nothing. I am on the latest firmware 1.7, does anyone have the same problem?

However, I think that the 1400 may be trying to do you a favor if you know what I mean .

Yep, I'm trying to avoid the 'surgery' method. I was hoping it was dust on the lens and that Barney's recommended Maxell Blu-ray disc cleaner would cure the ills. Neither it nor FW 1.8 did. I am still under warranty though, if it is only 7 months old? I'd hat eto void that by opening her up at this time.

Oh, and I do already have lots of monoprice HDMI cables, including the Blu one.

I have 3 LCD TV's, 2 HD-DVD decks, one Blu-ray, one DVR/DVD recorder, and two Oppo SD DVD players; all of which use HDMI cabling. It's the first thing I change when problems arise, but have yet to have that be the problem.

My 880 powers up the Philips LCD first, then a couple seconds later the 663, followed shortly thereafter by the BD-P1400. Then the TV is ready to have it's input set. I get frequent errors in playback. Someone suggested letting these components completely boot up (or more!) and be set before starting the next one in sequence. Talk about having to point at the component rack for a long time! I'm not sure if the 880 can do it, but how if it could was what I was wanting to know.

Yes, it is under a parts warranty for 1 year (labor is 90 days). I believe other members have reported an $89.00 labor charge + shipping to NJ for warranty service.

I would be curious if "updating" back to FW 1.5 would help. Just make sure that you update back to FW 1.8 before sending the 1400 to Sammy. Sammy is known to only install the latest FW and send it back to you.
