Yes, but in this thread earlier it said that the frequency's below 100hz would be lost on a 5.0 disc under such a set-up. Only that bass intended for the LFE (which in the case of 5.0 is nothing) would be present. So you are saying that this has been fixed since the 1400 originally came out?

Actually I just realized that I had a Frank Zappa DVD-Audio disc that is also 5.0. It has a DTS stream which I could try this on.

For those of you who are not happy with the BDP-1400, Costco has great prices on the Panasonic DMP-BD30K @ $309.00, the Sylvania NB 500SL9 for $279.00 and the Sony BDPS301 for $326.00. So far the only issue I have had with the BDP-1400 is the requirement to increase picture Brightness whenever I play a disc. The Sony BDP-S1 or either of my HD-DVD Toshiba units do not have this issue.
wasn't aware that that was the problem. Barney knew that earlier someone mentioned the LFE is outputted low. Not really a bug per se. some BD players has a +5 autoboost for the subwoofer output through analog (Panny BD30). The 1400 doesn't. Just adjust the gain knob on you sub for this.

Now if the 1400 doesn't redirect any frequencies below 100 hz if your front left and right are set to "Small" to the subwoofer analog output , then that's something new to Barney... My apologies for taking the manual literally and as published. I can do some analog tests tonite and we shall see...

thanks for the heads up, buddy. Barney still waiting on a good sub 200 bux player. Whatever it is, it is highly unlikely to be a Samsung, aBS - anything but samsung !

Sorry for the noob question.

I have an Onkyo H805 that I am using for SD playback as well as my HD DVDs. I have a lite-on BD drive for my HTPC.

I am looking to move away from my HTPC and just go back to standalone.

Reading through the profiles, it seems that all you really need is a 1.0 to play any disk and that the 2.0 basically as the web content type features that I had with HD DVD (I never used that feature anyway).

Is that correct?

Wil I still be able to access the on-disc extras with a 1.0 player like the 1400.

I have seen these as low as 220 refurbed and it seems to be one of the more reliable players.

without listing a price (cuz AVS appreciates that we don't), I can say that at big river the Panny BD30K is going for $58.69 less than the price you're showing...

looked at the 1400 technical review for miami vice. it should give you an idea of what "special features" the 1400 is capable of playback. definitely, not the true PiP stuff. But like the director commentary or how the movie was made extra stuff (not in true PiP) you can access with the 1400. hope that helps some, buddy.

THE NIGHTMARE BEFORE CHRISTMAS

"There's got to be a logical way to explain this Christmas thing."

CASE COVER

MOVIE IN A NUTSHELL SUMMARY
Pumpkin King Jack Skellington stumbles into the Land of Christmas, and tired of always playing the scary role for Halloween, he decides to take over the role of "Sandy Claws" and despite his good, but quixotic, intentions he spreads the joy of Christmas with a twist of Halloween.

OTHER MOVIE COMPARISON
How the Grinch Stole Christmas meets Corpse Bride and a little bit of Van Helsing

WHADABOUT THE MOVIE BARNEY
Rent: Yes
Boomoo Collection: Maybe Definite yes if you're a 7.1 surround sound boomoo collector like Barney.

Barney doesn't think The Nightmare before Christmas is one of those must have boomoo. I know I'm going to get branded by this, but the movie wasn't all that great. Not to say it was that bad neither. Probably because all the hype and popular reviews or just the plethora of musical scenes (I know, I know, it's supposed to be like that), but Barney would recommend waiting on a good deal or sale on this title if you must have it. It scores big on originality, but fails to deliver in keeping your interest throughout the movie. Corpse Bride was better at it. So there ya go. No I hate you Barney replies please .

Now that you've mentioned it, I vaguely remembered the situation. The 1400 "small" speaker setting did not stick. It reverted back to large everytime you turn it on. This problem has been confirmed to be fixed with FW 1.5. I will still test out the double bass effect of the 1400 later...

Awe Barney come on?!?!? You love Corpse Bride but think that TNBC was just ok?!?!?
I'm the opposite on this one. I absolutely love TNBC. If you like the stop-gap animation, or if you like Tim Burton movies, it is an absolute MUST HAVE. Everyone must at least watch the movie once, that's all I ask . This movie must look unbelievable on Blu-ray. I can't wait till I can get it.

This is a huge thread. Having just purchased this player I am wondering what outstanding issues there are with it since I have seen no problems so far. I have only played 8 discs in it though. I also left it for over 10 minutes yesterday on pause. I came back and it was stopped and showing the SAMSUNG screen. I pushed the play button and the disc went right back to the spot where I put it on pause. Isn't this counter to issues being reported on this thread. Now mine was a brand new unit built in July it seems so I don't know if this makes any difference.
Hi Ali,

What was the title? What is your Firmware version?

Almost All BD-Java discs will not resume from a stopped state.

good for you! did you get a new one or a refurb?
just curious.
It's a new one. Man I have to remember now. I think it was the Elton 60 concert. But the same thing happened to me I am sure the other day when I was playing the first disc in the Blade Runner set.
Barney, i'm not a big fan of Nightmare either. I want to like it, but it's too slow - and the lipsync'ing isn't that great IMO. it's neat to look at, but only for a little while. kinda boring...

That is funny, I have been waiting for BB to send me the Elton John Concert!

If you look at the 1400's display window (after the five minutes of pause) and see the time displayed where you paused the movie, the title will resume from the stopped state.

Try it with Nightmare before Christmas.

All the 1400 technical reviews I've done list the disc as resume play "No" or "Yes". The nightmare before christmas, no resume play. A corpse Bride, resume play "yes". Like my buddy Larry said, it not really a specific 1400 problem, but a general all BD player problem. Click on my signature for resume play to touch base on what's going on with that. The generic answer is resume play will not work for BD-Java titles. Recently, not only that, someone said specifically that there are no events and objects in BD Java to handle the pause or stop state of secondary audio and video streams. In other words, a BD with the Profile 1.1 PiP feature, activated or not, will not resume play. Other topic of discussion about resume play is discovered recently here in this thread that involves Universal implematation of their own screensaver and resume play. That includes their discs with BD-Java. kinda resolves everyone's delima with the Samsung short pause problem bs and the whole BDA problem with resume play for BD-J titles. Now if the BDA will spend the time to develop it, that will have to be seen. hope that clears it up a little .
That makes everything perfectly clear. So because this is a standard problem, I'm okay with the way the 1400 operates even if at some point I get a Java enabled disc which I guess I don't have yet. So are there any other issues with this player at this point. The lack of a distance setting for the speakers is annoying. I am use to having this feature as my other player, the Oppo 980 (that I now usef or my large collection of SACD's and DVD-Audio discs), has this functionality. However, this is only temporary as when I get an HDMI capable receiver it won't matter.
yea, I can see this being a nuisance as for analog audio not being able to set speaker distances, like the HD DVD players. but that something your receiver can do.

The only problem with the 1400 is the short 5 minute pause issue. I still fail to this day to 1) confirm if it is fixable and 2) to understand why they're not being proactive at fixing it. Maybe they don't understand the problem? Maybe they do not have any Samsung Engineers that know how to fix it? or maybe they just don't care?

But folks have found workarounds for time being. The simple solution is Samsung give us the option to turn this 5 minute pause to stop screensaver condition off or increase the pause state time period from 5 minutes to 30 minutes with the bouncing Samsung logo screensaver (for burn-ins). Simple !?

Barney consulted 1400 manual and for all intentions, it states you're just screwed!

I didn't bother with an A/B comparison, but the BD version seems to be less grainy. Not that HD version was bad or anything, but the film-like presentation was more obvious with the HD version. In terms of sound quality, the Bd version sounded better. It wasn't a night or day difference, but the surrounds were more pronounced and more enveloping. Considering that HD version was only DD+, I guess it makes sense. Again, not "Wow!!!" difference, but I noticed it.

As to the screeching sound (?) during the chopper scene at the beginning, I didn't notice anything.

I know this sounds crazy, but...

In the beginning of the movie at about 6 minutes in, when the troops are getting off the chopper, there is music playing in the background and throughout this tune, I get a bit of distortion in my front speakers on the really high notes.

Could you listen to your front speakers to see if you hear any bit of distortion or slight rattling in your front speakers?

This is the ONLY time that I have ever noticed this on my setup. I remember it happened probably about a year ago too when I owned this title on HD-DVD but I am using different speakers, wires...etc now.

I have tried different settings, making sure it wasn't nearby loose objects, and it even does it on the Transformers that I have on my DVR....

This reminds of the movie White Noise. So alone in the middle of night, I will not be listening for something I shouldn't be hearing in the first place... buk buk buuuk!

No x-files freaky white noise heard at the helicopter getting off scene Merlin, buddy.

that's good news buddy. Now if the BDA can take this example as what to do for the pause problem and the fix for resume play for BD-J titles, then everyone's problem solved. Universal, the savior of BD! (my hero !)
