Its probably one of the more elaborate menus ive encountered. Maybe the disc being dirty doesnt help things, but I took it back to the video store and they popped it in their PS3 and it ran beautifully smooth... perhaps its a case of the PS3 being more forgiving of a blemish or dirty disc, but whatever the reason is, I am not going to be too happy if it is even slightly likely that ill get a movie home only to find it wont play in my 1400. Admittedly this is the first occurence, but after having 60+ successes this is earth shattering and im now going to worry EVERY time i get a disc, if it will play or not.

FWIW, i do live in constant fear of my 1400 screwing up. every time i put a disc in i wonder 'is it gonna play or not, is it gonna brick the player or what?' it's almost kind of funny. (not really).
same with my tosh hd-30.
not so much with my a2 or onkyo hd805-they seem to be reliable.
so far.

So Barney do you remember if your 1400 struggled to play the menu smoothly? I will have to find out if our Region B release is different to Region A. I ended up swapping it out for a regular DVD version and thought the movie was very good Very MadMax like, mixed with 28 Days Later etc hehe

brotha from downunda , Doomsday is good movie, fulfilling dynamic HD surrounds. No prob playing with it using the 1400 on FW 1.8 at the time. Ironically, the 21 oz Melbourne Special from Outback Steakhouse did not... stay down under during the cannibalism scenes !

Thanks bud for the info. So it's not the same chipset used by the 1400. I've just convinced my buddy to get the 550 and ask him to do a comparison between it and the 1400 at the DVD upconversion department. Should find out something soon.

In the mean time, the NEC spec does look somewhat impressive.

On the Prince Caspian front, i must say it was a total let down when we saw that at the cinema, though perhaps its just a personal taste thing? That said, I quite liked the first movie, and had read all the books when i was a kid... maybe thats why i liked the first movie as it was a reminder of the series, but then when you get down to it, it is kind of a kids movie (not in a good way like Pixar stuff though!) and I was not impressed at all by Caspian. Interested to hear what others think - im not sure if it was a bad movie, or i just like the first Narnia for the novelty factor

Caspian Prince has some moving scenes in it. Like the first time, the kids returned to Narnia and the knoll finally realized who they are at the beach scene.

A little bit dragged out, but still a beatiful story. Should be boomoo collection worthy.

Wow, what a disappointment Indy4 was. It really did not live up to Indiana Jones series by any stretch of the imagination. The THX demo at the beginning nearly knocked my walls down though! Holy crap!

PS: no issues whatsoever (latest FW, bitstreaming to Denon3808)

I haven't been keeping up with this thread like I used to.
I downloaded the last firmware update around May (can't remember the version number).
Have there been any new updates since then?
BTW, my player has been working almost flawlessly since I bought it refurbished.
I've only had a couple of hiccups with it and the new movies play just fine.

I enjoyed Indy 4 as a whole, and in fact would probably rate it higher than Indy 2 which I never cared for. BUT, the ending of Indy 4 really, really stinks.

Barn, sorry to keep harping on about it, but can you specifically comment on the MENU on the DoomsDay disc? Did it run chunky/slowly at all? Did you have the same menu that we have in the Aussie version - with the spinning 3d model of a city/buildings in the shape of the doomsday logo, with various video clips from the movie playing inside all of the sides of the building etc? I just cant believe that it literally took my 1400 2 minutes to display the spinning and video clips before it showed the "PLAY SCENES SETUP BONUS" menu items, whereas the PS3 literally took 2 seconds to show them

I just rented Indy4 and Hulk 2008. The THX demo in Indy4 was awesome but my sub couldn't handle some of the LFE as it got real distorted. I have the sub that came with the Onkyo SP908 7.1 HTiB.

Hulk's audio was amazing. I thought the channel seperation and the LFE were some of the best I have ever heard
post #9673 of 12876
yep, Hulk was awesome. Liked it so much, just added The Incredible Hulk 2008 to my boomoo collection . Also added, Sleeping Beauty cause Barney has a soft spot for Disney and 7.1 surrounds... and ahemmm, the boomoo that Barney recommended as a "maybe" for your boomoo collection... Iron Man . I know, I know, Barney going to give it another third and forth spin to see what all the hype is about. Maybe he missed something the first and second time he watched it... and was a little bit dissappointed?

Brotha from Downunda, Doomsday was a long time ago for the ol' Barn. Sux getting old...errr . Can't really say I remembered the loading icon. I thought it was a club with all the spikes and stuff, filling it up with blood as the disc load? Maybe that was in The Signal?

Doomsday was a good flick. Maybe I'll swing by the local rental store and pick up a copy to see exactly what the deal is. Just don't think I had any issue with loading or playing Doomsday with my 1400...

I have an EP-500 from Axiom and it damn near knocked down pictures in my living room! A little over the top if you ask me!

I'm waiting for Hulk from Netflix, can't wait

Hey Barney, you were right about that "stays in Vegas" movie. It was enjoyable.

im not referring to the loading icon but the Disc Menu (you know, the first menu screen where you choose to play the movie, go to setup, special features etc).

Barney...I don't think I'm a glutton for punishment. I've enjoyed my two refurbished bdp1400's which have behaved wonderfully;
but I couldn't pass up the BigRiver deal today: buy 4 select bluray movies and get a 100 clams off the bdp1500's 206 clams. Put in for the bigriver credit card for another 30 clams off making the player and four movies under the magic 150 clams. Wonderful thing is that there were 4 movies I wanted and when I'm tired of them, off they go to be sold. Sure beats the 220 clams each one cost nine months ago. Hope it works when it arrives. If anyone's been on the blu ray fence, this might be a good time to...
Also, if I've violated any posting rules, please let me know.

Yes, you have violated lots of rules, including buying another sucky Samsung player after already owning a sucky Samsung player.

Only time will tell. There's a reason why Samsung is pushing the 1500 so extensively this holiday season. Without some form of a significant incentive package, the 1500 does not have a chance against the better equipped Sony's, Panasonics, and Pioneers.

The 1400 itself is a solid 1.0 BD player. I wouldn't call it an upgrade going to the 2.0 1500. But Barney is not a player hater, so best of luck to ya and hope the 1500 works out for ya, buddy.

Good to know, brotha from downunda. Haven't had the chance to go by the rental store all weekend . With trick or treatn', helping my buddy setting up his brand new Sony 550 , and taking the babies to the zoo... well, needless to say, no boomoos this weekend.

So, if no one has responded by the end of the day, I will pick up Doomsday at the rental store on way home from work... Speaking of which, also this weekend is daylight savings. Which means Barney showed up for work an hour early today ! Yall have daylight savings in Aussie?

Brotha Hans, glad you liked it. You know ol' Barney wouldn't steer you wrong.

Now that makes two people on this planet that actually enjoyed What Happens in Vegas!

I just watched Journey to the Center etc. BD. Kind of a dumb flick, but fun parts (not as good as Patton ). It's on the way back to Netflix.

A bit OT here, but speaking of 3-D and "popping out of the screen", anyone remember when Elvira hosted a showing of one of the old 50's 3-D horror movies back in the 80's? IIRC, it was "House of Wax". Anyway, the whole show, including Elvira's segments, was in red/blue 3-D. As a promo, 7-Eleven was giving away the glasses free with any purchase. The stores in my area ran out quick, I'll tell ya!

So this thread is huge and searching is extensive so maybe you can answer this question: can this BR player decode DD TrueHD and DDTS-MA and PCM out the analog outs? If not what can it output out the analogs?

It can internally decode all audio codecs (other than DTS-HD/MA) and convert those to PCM, then output via 5.1 analog output.
For DTS-HD/MA, the "core" DTS soundtrack will be extracted and that core track is what will be heard when useing the analog outputs.

How are load times compared to the sony 300/350/550?

I don't have any first hand experience with the Sony players, but the load times are consistantly loooong on the 1400.
At this point in the game, if looking to buy a BR player right now, I would throw the 300 and the 1400 out the window. For a few dollars more, you can get a much better player in something like the 350. ...and another step up from that would be a 550.
I hear the new Panasonics are doing well too.

Has anyone had trouble with a disc staying inside the player even though the tray opened. i had this happen yesterday when ejecting a disc. I was eventually able to get the disc to come out after removing the unit from my entertainment center and shaking it slightly, then ejecting the tray several times. I then loaded several discs, including the one that stuck, without any further problems. I'll tell ya, this scared the piss out of me, since my wife happened to be in the room at the time. I had to convince her to make the jump to bluray to begin with.

I actually saw the Monster from the Black Lagoon in the Wheeler Hall Auditorium at UC Berkeley (I was a student) in Red/Blue 3D in 1980. It was great! It's possible to do it correctly. However, colors and edges are much better in the polarized 3D system.

(you might want to dispose of them in a green drop-off area, though )
