FW upgrade for the ol' 1400 should do it some good. Be a big disappointment if Apes won't play on our 1400. Let us know buddy.

I would like to know if you can let us know what equipment you are using to watch and critique these boomoos.

Also would you please list your boomoo collection for us as well.

I would like to have a gander at your setup for comparison purposes.

Is your video ISF calibrated? How is your theater setup.

All the best

Why certainly... but I really don't want to cause any ruckus with the forum's Mods and AVSforums Admins and their policies. But I guess yall do have the right to know what criteria I've used to draw my reviews from.

So briefly, my modest system for just the boomoo technical reviews is:

Samsung 1400
Sony 60" SXRD TV
Onkyo 805 Receiver
Def Tech C/L/R 2500 Center Channel (Replaced Infinity Beta 360)
Def Tech BP-2006 Floorstanding Fronts (Replaced Infinity Beta 20)
Infinity Primus 250 Floorstanding Surrounds
Infinity Primus 150 Rears
Infinity Beta SW-12 Sub
Outlaw Audio LFM-12 Sub (Original)
Monster PowerCenter Line Conditioner/Filters
Phoenix Gold 12 AWG Wires...
and all certified 1.3 CAT 2 HDMI cables

As far as the collection is concerned, Barney's true Purple. Over 200 discs and half on HD DVD and half boomoos ! I'll probably put a list together of my boomoo collection and PM ya or anyone interested... With that being said, two technical reviews coming up. Doomsday (for my brotha from downunda ) and Journey to the Center of the Earth!

Doomsday is a very entertaining boomoo. Adding the rich and lively Master Audio surround sound makes an easy boomoo collection recommendation. May expect a sequel similar to the Resident Evil series. Be forewarned! The cannibalism scene will leave a permanent psychological mark , at least for ol' Barn. Keep it out of reach and out of sight if you have young ones around.

JOURNEY TO THE CENTER OF THE EARTH (3-D)

MOVIE IN A NUTSHELL SUMMARY
Professor and Scientist Trevor Anderson (Brendan Fraser) sets out on a journey with his nephew Sean to find his missing brother Max (Sean's father) which leads them to the center of the Earth.

EXTRA FEATURES WORTH NOTING

1) 2-D Version or 3-D Version Both versions on the same BD. Either choose the version at the beginning or while the movie is playing (popup disc menu).

2) Bookmark Feature Bookmark data is erased if the movie is reloaded. Yep, for us, Samsung 1400 owners, that means God forbid you have to pause the goshdarn movie for more than 5 minutes. You screwed if you've tried and have to wait over three godforsaken minutes to reload and find the place in the movie... k, don't get me started!

3) A World Within a World Interesting extra feature for us nerdy guys and gals . It tells the history of the center of the Earth theory, the book, the Jim Jones like commune , and the 1500 century scientist (Halley?) who has ties to Haley's Comet. For some reason Barney was captivated by the 10 minute documentary. Dunno why?

WHADABOUT THE MOVIE BARNEY?

Journey to the Center of the Earth is like Speed Racer. Distributed by New Line (part of Warner), and just like Speed Racer, Warner find a way to screw it up with only a 5.1 Dolby Digital surrounds! WTF??? A big let down since there were some potentials with the surrounds. Added the 3D analyzing... glyphling, whatever, glasses, this boomoo could have been a major hit on BD! Easily a five paws boomoo home theater experience rating.

K, nuff's nuff. Good story. Kids and adults enjoyed it. Give it a rent at least. I've watched the 2-D version for this review. Was looking for the 3-D analytical glasses from the Spy Kids 3-D DVD but maybe one of the babies musta chewed it up? Oh well, maybe Warner/New Line Entertainment will reconsider making the 7.1 Dolby TrueHD or DTS Master Audio version later... then definitely boomoo collection worthy. Period!

I think we all should petition the BDA for somekind of minimum requirements for audio on BD. Why have a BD player like the 1400 or a highspeed HDMI 1.3 receiver if we're only getting regular Dolby Digital? I rather get the DVD version instead... Just doesn't make good business sense for high def fans, imho.

BDA, DD+ or DTS-HR minimum... or back to DVD's. Period!

I second that. It seems I've been getting a lot of BD (purchased and rented) with only DD on the audio track. It doesn't make sense. BTW, I saw "Iron Man" last night and thought it was enjoyable but not worth buying. I'm not a big fan of Robert Downey Jr. Also, it reminded me a little of the "Batman" movies which I never purchased because I didn't think they were nearly as good as the "Superman" and "Spiderman" movies.

Also, been enjoying the Panny BD35 which lets you have enough time to pause the movie and do something else for more than 5 minutes.

Thanks so much for your equipment list - very similar to mine.

I have the Onkyo 605
Kef 3005 5.1 speaker system.
PS3
Sammy 1400
Sony 55 SXRD
Monster Cables

Looking forward to the list of BOOMOOS

Outstanding!!!

It must be cuz I'm old... I could not get past Brendan Fraser's lack of acting ability and get involved in the movie. Every time I would "forget" I was watching a movie, he'd do something crappy... I don't know how the Mummy 1 & 2 didn't do that to me. That and the total disregard for physics.
Oh, and I totally missed out that there was 3D... dammit! Now I have to rent it agin. Stupid Netflix! Stupid old guy

since it seems no one has posted about the new Bond BD's:

watched THUNDERBALL last night. one of my favs-likely cuz I saw it in the theater during it's original release(at the not-so-innocent age of 8! )

this is one of those looooonngg loaders!! over 3 mins. from close of tray & I was sweatin' a bit as there was a moment I thought it was gonna lock up the player. the disc seems to have to load & read each layer of info(i.e. you get the a progress bar-blank screen-studio logo-another progress bar-blank screen-disc menu-select movie-blank screen!!-ANOTHER progress bar-MGM lion roar-movie starts[whew!]) see why I was nervous?

on the fun side the DTD-MA track was very lovely(even at low volume) & for a 43-yr-old film PQ was A-1. good enough to see the flaws-unfortunately-in the blue-screen work during the jetpack scene. amusing as you clearly read the stenciling on the H-Bombs("Handle Like Eggs"). and of course that great underwater battle!!!

OT to grubavs: if ya think Anne Hathaway's legs are yummy in GET SMART you should see them in those thigh-high leather boots in THE DEVIL WEARS PRADA!!! worth at least TWO droolin' smilies!!!

i watched 't-ball' ~3 weeks ago and 'live and let die' a few nights ago; both blu-rays, on my 1400/720p pj. so i know what you mean about extra long load times and is it gonna lock up player.

i glad to say after loading, both played flawlessly all the way thru. looked and sounded great, imo.

edit-sir roger moore was on hannity and colmes last pm. looked good for 81.

According to the manual, the 1400 does NOT play BD-R/RE. Maybe one of the FW updates changed that ?

The 1400 has no problems playing BD R or BD RE. I have several brands that I have used - LG, Sony, TDK, and the cheapie blaze bd r's at shop4tech.com as well. They've all played flawlessly.

THE STRANGERS

MOVIE IN A NUTSHELL SUMMARY
Inspired by a true event, on the night of February 11, 2005, Kristen McKay [hot elf princess from Lord of the Ring] and James Hoyt left a friend's wedding reception and returned to the Hoyt family's summer home, only to be terrorized by three masked psychos.

1) Unrated Extended Edition or Theatrical Version Can be chosen at the beginning or during the movie with the popup menu option.

2) My Scenes Bookmark Feature Works even if the 1400 is turned Off and back On again (and after reloading the movie). There is an option to send your scenes ("Send Scene") to share with the rest of the Universal community... if you have a BD Profile 2.0 player... so not any use to us 1400 owners, but just thought to mention it.

3) BD-Live BD Profile 2.0 feature unaccessible by the 1400. I've accessed it with the PS3 and nothing too exciting to report. It's just like the Hulk where you can previews some movies by Universal and get connected with their On-line community. I wished I've remembered my password from the HD DVD days?

WHADABOUT THE MOVIE BARNEY?

The Strangers is a frightening very credible terror film. Since it is base on true events, I was kinda disappointed that the extra features didn't go into further details, especially since it's on BD. The ending also left you empty handed? I think this is where it failed to reward the audience. Throughout the movie, the story kept your interest and scared? But I think the ending is either setting you up for a sequel or just going along the same line as the intro... "We don't know why 1.4 million violent crimes happen each year in the US? They just do." Thus "empty handed". Not really a gory horror, but an excellent credulous suspense thriller. Nonetheless should be a good rental.

When the audio is regular DD or DTS I refuse to buy the BD. Why pay more when you can upconvert the picture. Sure the picture isn't as good as a BD but the loss of sound kills the experience anyway.

I feel the same way. I almost bought Alice Cooper live at Montreaux but noticed it was only in regular DD so I put it back on the shelf.

Hey you guys might be interested to know that over here in Australia, Samsung have finally "admitted" that the 1400 wont be getting a Profile 1.1 upgrade, as their website previously had said. Their marketting manager had also been quoted in online media as saying that the Aussie 1400 was different to the USA version and would get a Profile 1.1 update. But they have now admitted that the parent korean company has decided that the update will not be done.

The interesting thing is that since they had essentially "advertised" a promise of Profile 1.1 and have now gone against that statement, some folks at DTV forums had complained about it, which got escalated through Samsung's complaints department etc... and it is now at the point where ANYONE who knows about this can ring them up with the same argument and get offered either a FULL REFUND of the initial purchase price, or a free upgrade to the BD-P1500 player

More info in this thread if anyone is interested http://www.dtvforum.info/index.php?showtopic=70458&st=0

So, it looks like i will be getting a refund of my $560 AUD I paid in February, and buying a new player (im thinking either a Sony 350/550 or a PS3 at this stage). Funnily, even if I wanted a 1500 model (WHICH I DONT!), considering they can be bought for under $400, it makes sense to just get the refund anyway

Pretty amazing huh! My situation couldnt have worked out much better if I had tried The 1400 has been flawless for the last 9 months or so (apart from recent DoomsDay issue, which still could have been a dirty disc), and I never thought they would actually make good on the Profile 1.1 thing anyway. But now due to some perserveerant folks on DTV forums, Samsung has been backed into a corner, and I can now update to the latest generation player of my choice, and even have some $$ left in my pocket depending on which one i choose... Cant believe it!

it's working for me. I think on a larger US market, Samsung will be less likely to that. This is something I have been bouncing around in my mind for us here for a couple of months now. And as much as I hate to talk to Samsung (PITA ) and as much as they love to hear from me, I might just ask them to see what they will say. They can only say yes or no, right?
