Menu clicks also triggers the down conversion of the primary soundtrack like Barny found out with Kung Fu Panda. The best thing is to leave Secondary Audio off unless you want to listen tot he Secondary track.

Yeah, it shouldn't be that way. However, this is not Panasonic's first Blu-ray player, so they should know by now what they are doing. I have a feeling there is no other way around it other than what you already said.

When the hell did this turn into the Panasonic thread?
Not that I even have any business being here anyway since I don't own a 1400 anynore .

I think that's a good advice for any BD player that has this option, brotha veras. 'member the many "Oogway's wise sayings" in KFP? Well it's that... Also there was a sweet saying by Oogway that I'll quote him on tonight in the Technical Review .

We're comparing our "equipment" ! including the 1400. Which by the way both unit is exactly the same width... The 1400 is a perdy stand for the BD35 right now .

K, I just talked to a nice lady from Samsung ECR department, Jackie. First, the last person I talked to left a note that "it is not necessary to contact the customer... just need to put the request in the next firmware upgrade..." or something like that. I told her that's totally "not true". I was expecting someone to contact me within 24 to 48 hours.

To make a long story short, I mentioned the Hancock seamless branching problem our 1400 is having issues with AND our brothas from downdunda generous offer from Samsung, free upgrade to the 1500 or refund the full purchase price .

Course she never heard such an offer but willing to send it to upper management. New ticket # is 3000170838. I will hear something from Samsung's upper management with 24 to 48 hours ...

Let's hope Sammy Clause is in the Holiday spirits these days and I'm perfectly fine in calling it even if I can downgrade our 1400 to the 1500 FOR FREE!

btw, she gave me a direct line to the tech department... Ooooh, someone is gonna get an ear full !

guys do you think the panny bd35 is a better player than the 1400, I mean better sound and PQ?, I ave the 1400, but I was thinking on getting another brp. how do they compare? or should I upgrade to a 1500?
my recommendations are:
  1. Upgrade to any BD player except the 1500.
  2. The BD35 is hands down the winner over the 1400 and the 1500... and the Sony 350 .

The BD35 and the 1500 have stereo analog ouput, not 5.1 like our 1400. PQ wise, yes there is a subtle improvement in BD with the BD35K over the 1400. Note the BD35 can decode internally DTS-HD Master Audio. Something the Sony 350 and 1400 can not do... I forgot if the 1500 decodes MA or not ... probably not.

KUNG FU PANDA

SHORT AND SWEET SUMMARY
Po (Jack Black) the panda must learn kung fu from Master Shifu (Dustin Hoffman) and become the Dragon Warrior to defeat the evil Tai Lung and his ambition to take the knowledge and power of The Dragon Scroll by force and take his revenge out on the Village of Peace.

OTHER MOVIE COMPARISON
Kung Fu the Mini-Series meets Mulan meets The Five Deadly Venoms meets Drunken Master meets The Prodigal Son

BARNEY'S BOOMOO RATING FOR HOME THEATER EXPERIENCE
Overall Home Theater Experience
Movie Stupid So-So [Spectacular]
Video 1080p/24fps Off *
Audio 5.1 Dolby TrueHD **
Subtitle Legibility ***

AUDIO SOUNDSTAGE SUB-CATEGORY
Center Channel Dialog Clarity
Balanced Surround Sound Volume
Surround Sound Detail
Surround Sound Dynamics (Bass, Treble, Separation, and Transition)
Low Frequency Effects

* Excellent PQ
** Bitstream to Onkyo 805 | Late Nite Mode: Off | Re-EQ: Off | 7.2 Surround Sound Setup (7.5 w/ LFE Connected Fronts?)
*** White text with thin black borders. Did not use the bottom black bar area. Sometimes too fast.

1400 TECHNICAL DATA
Video Problem: No
Audio Problem: No
Load Problem: Yes | Category A *
Total Loading Time: 3 min 08 sec | PS3: 2 min 04 sec | BD35: 1 min 43 sec
Skip Previews "Shortcut" Works: No
Resume Play Works: No
Annoying Menu Button Sound or Option: No
Main Menu or Popup Menu GUI Intensity Rating: Simple [Moderate] Complex
Dynamic Compression: Off
FW: 1.9 | PS3: 2.52 | BD35: 1.1

* The 1400 loading problems and the fix can be put into three categories, A, B, and C.

Category A is when you received a "This disc can not be played" message. The common solution is to turn On the 1400 with the disc inside, to load the movie.

Category B is when the BD is taking a long time to load, seem like it is stuck loading, or just won't load at all. The simple solution for this type of load problem is to turn On the 1400 without a disc inside it. Wait for the "No disc" message to appear on the front panel. Then Pop in the movie.

Category C is also when you received a "This disc can not be played" message. The common solution is to inspect the disc for smear marks and scratches. Look toward the center for loading problems. The scratches and smear marks toward the outside edges would highly likely be audio and video skipping stuttering problems while the movie is playing, and not during loading.

If you are still having loading issues not resolved by Category A, B, or C, then it is probably a scratched or dirty lens, a bad disc, or you just SOL... Actually, the Maxwell DVD utility for BD player lens cleaning may help for dirty/dusty lenses. It worked for me and I definitely swear by it.

EXTRA FEATURES WORTH NOTING
BD-Live From the disc main menu only, BD Profile 2.0 feature not accessible with the 1400.

Trivia Track From the disc main menu and popup menu, popup scroll that comes up in the bottom middle of the screen with messages and factoids about the particular scene.

The Animators' Corner From the disc main menu and popup menu, BD Profile 1.1 PiP feature not accessible with the 1400.

Meet the Cast From the disc main menu only, meet Angelina Jolie and Lucy Liu.

Po's Power Play From the disc main menu only, 3 individual games/activities. A noble attempt but kinda awkward using the remote arrow buttons instead of the joystick or controller.

Kung Fu Fighting Music Video by Cee-Lo Green and Jack Black

DreamWorks Animation Video Jukebox Various music soundtracks from various Dreamwork's movies, e.g. Madagascar "I Like to Move It, Move It" and The Bee Movie "Here Comes the Sun". This is actually cool and hip.

A lot more extra feature stuff. However, I was kinda disappointed not seeing "Secrets of the Furious Five" movie that came along on the DVD 2-Pack version.

WHADABOUT THE MOVIE BARNEY?
Rent: Yes
Boomoo Collection: Yes Already in Barney's

Kung Fu Panda is a highly entertaining movie for adults as well as kids. The BD version sports a powerful LFE exploding Dolby TrueHD soundtrack. Throw in tons of extras including BD-Live and Bonus View materials, I strongly recommend adding this title to your boomoo collection, ASAP.

Congrats on the Sony 550. You know it's really not fair fight to put the BD35 against the 550? It's like letting your older brother in the 5th grade handle your 3rd grader's playground business for ya. 550 vs. 55, that's a better match, and the 55 wins hands down.

why? boils down to NEC vs. P4 Unicipher chipset, buddy ! ... btw, the real slaughter is putting the BD35 against the Sony 350 (two third graders ). That's right, easy as taking candy from a baby...

oh yea, it's definite PQ improvement with the BD35K over the 1400...

I do agree with ya Barn, the S550 is not a fair match for the BD35 - but did you notice the bit where i said that Panasonic have no plans to release the BD55 here in Aus I would have liked the divx functionality of the BD55 (though i do have XBMC for that anyhow, but still!). I certainly would have liked to be able to try/compare the BD55 vs the S550 but as i say, Panasonic made that decision for me by not making the BD55 available here

Regaring picture quality and upscaling etc... i guess i am just not picky... i found the Sammy 1400 to be totally fine for my PQ needs, so in the end when picking between the S550 and BD35, and finding way too many opinions from folks clearly more discerning/picky than I am - in the end i had a play with both players (S550 and BD35) and let things like usability, speed, aesthetics and onscreen menu/display guide my decision, rather than upscaling ability that I may/may not even be able to notice. I didnt go the S350 because it doesnt do DTS-MA internally, and since this was an upgrade i wanted something that addressed ALL the things that the 1400 couldnt do, so DTS-MA was on my hit list - eventhough i probably wont use it since i will just bitstram to my Onkyo 705

So i wonder, if i did have the BD55 option here in Aus, i still might have gone the Sony anyway! It really does look/feel alot nicer than the Panasonic did, and i assume the 55 would be the same as the 35 in that department, just as the S550 and its little brother are...

Anyone up for Shawshank, Wanted, Caspian Prince (7.1), X-Files, or The Day the Earth Stood Still with their 1400 tonight?

I know I'm in the Xmas mood for some Home Alone myself !

Any other problems with KFP Barney?

I was having audio and video dropouts during the movie but I did not have a loading problem.

I am quick to blame the Sammy but it may be my Onkyo 805. The fact that I lost audio and video suggests to me that it was the Sammy.

I've watched KFP at least 3 times with no hiccups whatsoever. I'm also on a 805 with all the latest patches/firmware. However, I use HDMI for audio and component for video (720p) going to my old Sony 10HT projector.

This movie is definitely reference material. The LFE track is amazing.

WHADABOUT THE MOVIE BARNEY?

Wanted is an explosive action packed type of movie. As much as I like... drooled? over Angelina Jolie's sexy back , tho just for a brief seconds boys, I was not really that impressed with the movie. Don't get me wrong. The audio and video presentation was fantastic. But curving bullet shots and shooting each other bullets, I kid you not , maybe exciting and incredible for the first a couple of times. But more than 5 times will definitely lose the WoW effect fast... Should be a good rental nevertheless.

No problem here with KFP. Watched it with the 1400 and 805 combo the other night. Highly likely it's a bad disc. Try another one and let us know buddy.

Initiation boomoo, The Dark Night... Wow, what a fabulous choice! Let's hope Warner won't let us hidef fans down with a horrendously encoded 5.1 TrueHD soundtrack. Their past TrueHD track records and 8^ menu navigation plague their titles since who knows when... Not saying to jinx ya or anything buddy...

  • Silent Running - no issues

No reason (as yet) to upgrade to 1.9 firmware.

I have had a 1400 for some time now and its worked rather well for me. I just upgraded my AVR to a Pioneer SC-07 and now and the video cuts out every time a menu option changes on screen. I can get video back by changing to a different input then going back to the input the player is on and it will work until something changes again. Odd because the SC-07 is strictly pass through. When I go direct to TV the problem goes away. Any tips or suggestions on how to resolve this issue? Tried a different cable and no change and I have firmware 1.9 installed already.
Sounds like HDMI handshaking issues, if you're using HDMI? the Pio SC-07 has another another input, e.g. HDMI 1-3? If so use test out the other ones and if no more problem, assign that to be the 1400 main source input.

what the native resolution of your TV? If all else fails, call Pioneer to see if they have a firmware fix for this issue... or if they ever hear of such issue?
